Green Blog: Hearings Set on the Gowanus Cleanup

The federal Environmental Protection Agency plans to hold two public meetings next week on its proposed Superfund cleanup of the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn. The massive job involves dredging contaminated sediment from most of the canal at a cost of up to $504 million. The agency is also proposing that the city control raw sewage discharges by installing holding tanks that would temporarily retain excess sewage and storm water during rains until treatment plants can handle the load.

The E.P.A. is scheduled to discuss its plan and answer questions at two meetings scheduled for next Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 23 and 24. The agency is also accepting public comments in writing until March 28, including e-mails sent to GowanusCanalComments.Region2@epa.gov.

The first meeting is next Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at P.S. 58 (the Carroll School) at 330 Smith Street in the Carroll Gardens section of Brooklyn. The following evening, a meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Joseph Miccio Community Center, 110 West Ninth Street, near Henry Street, in Brooklyn.
