The parents of a Lee High School student are blaming their son?s suicide on bullying at the school and have notified the City of Jacksonville and Duval County Public Schools that they intend to file a lawsuit.
They claim their 15-year-old son committed suicide in January of 2011 because he was ?a victim of bullying and harassment by fellow students.? Further, they allege that teachers and administrators were aware of the bullying, but did nothing to stop the bullying.
Florida?s anti-bullying law is one of the toughest in the nation and requires that schools in the state institute policies banning harassment and intimidation by students and teachers or risk losing state funds. The law also mandates prompt investigation of bullying allegations and requires that parents be notified about what is being done to protect their children.
According to WTEV.com, the family hopes that the lawsuit will not only spotlight the real consequences of school bullying, but will also make people aware of the often-hushed topic of suicide among young people. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide is the third leading cause of death among 10- to 24-year-olds.
The school district and the city will not comment on the pending litigation.
Despite the law, far too many children are still bullied at school, and as you can see, the consequences can be devastating. In Florida, school officials are obligated to stop bullying when they see it or when it is reported to them.
