Analysis of small, repeating earthquakes in an Antarctic ice sheet may not only lead to an understanding of glacial movement, but may also shed light on stick slip earthquakes like those on the San Andreas fault or in Haiti, according to Penn State geoscientists.

"No one has ever seen anything with such regularity," said Lucas K. Zoet, recent Penn State Ph. D. recipient, now a postdoctoral fellow at Iowa State University. "An earthquake every 25 minutes for a year."

The researchers looked at seismic activity recorded during the Transantarctic Mountains Seismic Experiment from 2002 to 2003 on the David Glacier in Antarctica, coupled with data from the Global Seismic Network station Vanda. They found that the local earthquakes on the David Glacier, about 20,000 identified, were predominantly the same and occurred every 25 minutes give or take five minutes.

The researchers note in the current Nature Geoscience that, "The remarkable similarity of the waveforms indicates that they share the same source location and source mechanisms." They suggest that "the same subglacial asperity repeatedly ruptures in response to steady loading from the overlying ice, which is modulated by stress from the tide at the glacier front."

"Our leading idea is that part of the bedrock is poking through the ductile till layer beneath the glacier," said Zoet.

The researchers have determined that the asperity -- or hill -- is about a half mile in diameter.

The glacier, passing over the hill, creates a stick slip situation much like that on the San Andreas fault. The ice sticks on the hill and stress gradually builds until the energy behind the obstruction is high enough to move the ice forward. The ice moves in a step-by-step manner rather than smoothly.

But motion toward the sea is not the only thing acting on the ice streaming from David glacier. Like most glaciers near oceans, the edge of the ice floats out over the water and the floating ice is subject to the action of tides.

"When the tide comes in it pushes back on the ice, making the time between slips slightly longer," said Sridhar Anandakrishnan, professor of geoscience. "When the tide goes out, the time between slips decreases."

However, the researchers note that the tides are acting at the ground line, a long way from the location of the asperity and therefore the effects that shorten or lengthen the stick slip cycle are delayed.

"This was something we didn't expect to see," said Richard B. Alley, Evan Pugh Professor of Geosciences. "Seeing it is making us reevaluate the basics."

He also noted that these glacial earthquakes, besides helping glaciologists understand the way ice moves, can provide a simple model for the stick slip earthquakes that occur between landmasses.

"We have not completely explained how ice sheets flow unless we can reproduce this effect," said Alley. "We can use this as a probe and look into the physics so we better understand how glaciers move."

Before 2002, this area of the David glacier flowed smoothly, but then for nearly a year the 20-minute earthquake intervals occurred and then stopped. Something occurred at the base of the ice to start and then stop these earthquakes.

"The best idea we have is that during those 300 days, a dirty patch of ice was in contact with the mount, changing the way stress was transferred," said Zoet. "The glacier is experiencing earthquakes again, although at a different rate. It would be nice to study that."

Unfortunately, the seismographic instruments that were on the glacier in 2002 no longer exist, and information is coming from only one source at the moment.

Weekly Photo Contest: Silhouettes!

It's time to announce this week's photo contest -- Silhouettes! Last week, we focused on shadows and many of our (very awesome) entries were technically silhouettes, so it was only natural for us to move specifically to silhouettes for this week! silhouettes are often times very moody, dramatic, and/or romantic and are classic genre of photography. Although classic, in continues to be a favorite style -- and we want to see your style!

Congrats to LaPs for winning last week's photo contest!

The prize: Glif tripod mount and stand!

In addition to a thumbs up from the iMore crew and all of us yelling about how great of a photo star you are, the winner of this week's photography contest will receive a Glif tripod mount and stand!

Jacksonville Parents Intend to Sue over Son's Suicide | Farah and ...

The parents of a Lee High School student are blaming their son?s suicide on bullying at the school and have notified the City of Jacksonville and Duval County Public Schools that they intend to file a lawsuit.

They claim their 15-year-old son committed suicide in January of 2011 because he was ?a victim of bullying and harassment by fellow students.? Further, they allege that teachers and administrators were aware of the bullying, but did nothing to stop the bullying.

Florida?s anti-bullying law is one of the toughest in the nation and requires that schools in the state institute policies banning harassment and intimidation by students and teachers or risk losing state funds. The law also mandates prompt investigation of bullying allegations and requires that parents be notified about what is being done to protect their children.

According to WTEV.com, the family hopes that the lawsuit will not only spotlight the real consequences of school bullying, but will also make people aware of the often-hushed topic of suicide among young people. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide is the third leading cause of death among 10- to 24-year-olds.

The school district and the city will not comment on the pending litigation.

Despite the law, far too many children are still bullied at school, and as you can see, the consequences can be devastating. In Florida, school officials are obligated to stop bullying when they see it or when it is reported to them. If you feel your child is being bullied at school and nothing is being done, call a Jacksonville personal injury lawyer at Farah & Farah to discuss your legal options. We?re here to help ? Nikon Coolpix S01 hands-on (video)

Nikon Coolpix S01 handson

Another gem at Nikon's unveiling today is this little Coolpix S01, and by "little" we really mean little. At just 96 grams, this is the smallest and lightest Coolpix device ever but it's still surprisingly usable. But like our hands-on with the Android-powered S800c, we couldn't walk away with any sample photos to judge the S01's image quality. Just a quick recap: here you get a 10-megapixel CCD sensor, 3x optical zoom (29mm to 87mm), 720p video capture, several filter effects and a simple touch interface on a 2.5-inch LCD. We also saw five color options in Hong Kong: pink, black, white, red and silver (fingerprint magnet alert!). Our only complaints are that said camera uses a resistive touchscreen, and the lack of white balance options is also quite bizarre -- $179 isn't exactly a cheap enough price to justify this flaw. Still interested? Hit the video after the break for a quick tour.

Update: And the official sample shots are available now.

Choosing a capable repair company for virus removal or high end ...

Internet and Technology | Computers and Technology | * Written by Jack Bandy | Sunday, 19 August 2012 03:25 | Word Count: 544

High end laptops are considered by many as their treasures. Having a branded, high end, top of the line laptop with additional features definitely feels like having a laptop is a luxury experience. Nevertheless, having a high end laptop brand does not give you immunity against possible hardware and software risks. In fact, in hindsight, buying all those additions to your laptop might make it more expensive when it comes to repairs. Hardware issues can happen in your Mac computer and when that happens, prepare for expensive costs especially if you have to go through repair centers. While Mac has reliable service centers, the cost of repair can be very disconcerting. It is ideal that you have your options when choosing Mac repair service before finally deciding on the service provider.?
While there are isolated cases of numerous laptop owners getting ripped off by the service centers of the companies where they bought the laptops, it is vital to understand that these cases do happen and it is important to know that it could happen to you. While you may trust the brand, sometimes, the manner they do business may not be fully disclosed to clients especially in terms of repairs. Can you really trust them to offer cheap and reliable service in terms of simple virus removal, or will you be victimized by misleading practices which includes replacing the inside with new components? It is vital that you review the service provider before deciding if you should go to an independent company offering Mac repair or if the service of the Mac repair center is indeed reliable for your needs.?
If you have a laptop, no matter if it is high end or a cheap one, your goal is for it to last as long as it can , or at least, before you move on to another device. In fact, if you properly maintain your laptop, it can last a very long time and you can give it to your family, use it as a dedicated home computer or sell it to a friend and earn some money. Part of that strategy is getting a capable repair specialist to handle all your needs. These tasks include virus removal, hardware repairs, replacement services and other tasks. Think about it: we invested a lot of money to buy high end laptops and even with cheaper ones; we have used it for a considerable number of years for our various tasks. Thus, it is but more productive to keep it in perfect condition, use it as a backup or have someone uses it and extends the functionality of our computers.?
Mac repair is vital since we all know that Apple computers are not cheap investments. While we know that they are reliable and built to last, the manner in which we use the laptop can affect its life cycle. Thus, it is important to make some effort to find a capable repair company that can offer top notch services to clients.

?

Investing on a laptop requires investing on preventive maintenance. Our company offers comprehensive repair services including Mac repair and Virus removal. How can we help you? Visit our website and discover our range of services to satisfy your needs.

Canzano: A soldier's mission, a family's devastation, a nation's loss ...

TIGARD -- Paper table cloths draped three small folding tables in the backyard of Jeff Keller's home on Sunday. One red, one white, and one blue. It was here, not far from where two brothers once played as little boys, that a grieving family tried to stop the world from wobbling.

The military record will show that Army Pfc. Andrew Keller, 22 and the leader of his unit, was killed in action Wednesday in Afghanistan. He was shot by insurgents on a hillside in Charkh, and when the "Soldier down!" call came, two men in his unit ran up the hill two miles to his body.Keller was dead from a gunshot to the head. Where do you start? How do you tell such an important story for what is the 34th local family to have a son die in Afghanistan since the war began? How do you ever again read the words, "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," and not also think about Andrew's mother, Kim, sobbing in her black dress at the foot of the stairs he climbed as a 10-year old?Jeff Keller coached a memorable team of ballplayers from Murrayhill to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., in 2006. His youngest son, Derek, was a star on that team. His oldest son, Andrew, was a MVP on the Southridge High School football team. This family was all of us -- and America, too -- right down to their home in the cul-de-sac, the fishing trips and the scrapbook that mom kept of Andrew's military career.

Inside, there are photographs of Andrew, standing tall in uniform. And his first letter home, in which he wrote, "I miss you guys so much it hurts but this is what I want in my life." And even the Delta Air Lines boarding pass from Andrew's flight to boot camp. He sat in seat 17F, and I wondered if he looked out the window and watched Portland disappear as the plane took off, or maybe turned to the passenger beside him and explained that he'd joined the Army.

Soldiers are brothers. We hear that all the time. But you don't fully grasp it until you hear Jeff Keller talk about those two soldiers who ran to his son's body. They saw that he was dead, and pulled off their shirts to shield him as a helicopter stormed in. As the rotors hurled rocks and debris everywhere, they covered his dead body with their bare backs to the sky.

"They got," Jeff said, choking up, "all torn up protecting his body."

Andrew struggled after high school to find purpose. Football was over. He got engaged to Marissa Jones, his eighth-grade sweetheart and, after being talked out of going into the military, enrolled in community college.

Then, in his second year of college, he told his parents, "I'm thinking of joining the Army."

Dad said, "Now, let's talk about this."

Andrew said, "I've already joined."

Andrew was 22, an adult, and the exact kind of proud, confident, capable soldier that our country has long relied upon. His parents, while worried sick at the idea of their first-born seeing combat, knew he had to make his own journey.?

It was one that ultimately led to what was supposed to be a 48-hour mission to secure an observation post.?

One that led to Andrew?s final communication to his father:

"I'm safe. I'm on a hill in some God-forsaken place. Text you as soon as I can."

----------

Derek, 19, was home alone when the military officer arrived. Neighbors rushed over after seeing the scene unfold on the porch. Kim was at the post office, mailing a care package Andrew would never receive. Jeff was in Newport on business when his phone rang with "Derek" popping up on the caller ID.

Nothing has felt the same since.

"I drove two and a half hours straight home," Jeff said. "All I remember from the drive was hitting the rumble strips on the side of the road and middle of the road."

Jeff called me on Friday from the Air Force base in Dover, Del. He, his wife, son and Marissa had made the trip to receive Andrew's body. They were lost in a swirl of grief.

The father said: "I knew I had a wonderful child, but I didn't realize until he died that so many people felt the same way I did."

Jeff cried talking about the 22 flags placed by Andrew's friends on the roundabout near his home. He cried talking about seeing waders on the garage wall, reminders of a family fishing trip they?d planned for next year. And he cried again talking about his son's fianc?. "I'm heartbroken for my son and Marissa; they had plans."

They were escorted to the tarmac Saturday, where they received Andrew's body. There will be a military autopsy. There will be a service this week. Andrew's cousin, also in the military, will accompany the body to Portland where Andrew will be buried in Willamette National Cemetery. But this was a private moment, with tears running down everyone?s cheeks.

The family that had spent so much time talking about losing Andrew had him back, finally.

----------

Lots of people knew Andrew. There were all around the Kellers? home on Sunday. They brought food. They brought hugs. A few stood on the porch, smoking cigarettes, looking at the United States flags planted in the lawn and the poster-size photograph of Andrew with the word "Our hero" on it. Andrew's grandmother, a warm woman with a great hug, stood not far from a dining-room table covered with photographs of Andrew as a little boy.

Andrew caught his first fish at 6. He caught a 32-pound salmon when he was 7. His father tried to take the rod and help land the fish, but Andrew wouldn't let anyone touch it.

He was fiercely loyal, and kind. Andrew's friends talked about his athleticism, and his giant hands, and his passion for life.

A classmate who was picked on in high school called Jeff after hearing the news and said, "Sir, I want you to know your son was nice to me when nobody else was."

So yeah. How do you do justice to Andrew and his family? What do you do with a good life interrupted? What do you make of the news that Andrew's unit was pulled off that hill in Charkh after his death because it was deemed too risky for anyone to be there?

Kim and Jeff tried to make sense of that in the wee hours of Sunday morning. They decided that their son would tell them, "Mom, Dad -- if my death saved other people from being in danger and losing their lives, then my death was worthwhile."

All we ever want is for our lives to mean something.

Andrew's did.

----------

There is no consolation in learning the details of a soldier's death. But context becomes comfort. Jeff said, "My son was doing what he wanted to do. If we were there for a reason, he wanted to be fighting for us."

The father stood around that table of photographs on Sunday, with a group of friends and neighbors, recounting the story of those two soldiers rushing up that hill, risking their lives to protect his son's remains. There's a brotherhood among soldiers that we could all learn from.

Jeff said to the room: "If there's any comfort that's where it lies because there isn't much comfort anywhere else."

Pfc. Andrew J. Keller is the 154th soldier with ties to Oregon and southwest Washington to be killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. I stood in his family's home watching as they wrestled with their son's brave desire to serve his country and their gut-twisting grief. I kept coming back to that flight before boot camp. I hope the passenger sitting beside Andrew in Row 17 turned and thanked him.

I hope someone thanked him for us all.

"I'm going to keep him alive in everybody's heart," his dad said. "It's my my goal to make sure nobody ever forgets my son."

'80s action stars back on top in "Expendables 2"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The aging tough guys of "Expendables 2" strong-armed the box office competition with a chart-topping $28.8 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales over the weekend, according to studio estimates.

Last week's domestic winner, "The Bourne Legacy" starring Jeremy Renner, slipped to the No. 2 spot with $17 million. In third place, newcomer 3D stop-motion movie "ParaNorman," earned $14 million.

The Expendables" sequel that unites "Rocky" actor Sylvester Stallone, "Terminator" Arnold Schwarzenegger and other 1980s stars, brings together a group of spies for an easy mission that turns dangerous when they seek revenge for a murder.

The film follows the surprise success in 2010 of the original "Expendables," which opened with $34.8 million domestically and ultimately grossed $274 million worldwide.

In addition to 66-year-old Stallone and 65-year-old Schwarzenegger, the film stars Bruce Willis, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Chuck Norris, plus younger stars such as "Hunger Games" actor Liam Hemsworth.

Lions Gate had predicted a debut in the low $30 million range, while other box office watchers saw a possible $40 million opening.

David Spitz, executive vice president and general sales manager at Lions Gate, said a large proportion of the audience were aged over 25, which gave strength to its longer term prospects.

"It always bodes well for box office playability when you have an older audience," he said.

Lions Gate paid about $30 million for rights to distribute the film in the United States, Canada and Britain.

In a bid for family audiences, "ParaNorman" landed in a surprising third place with the story of a boy named Norman who speaks to ghosts and ghouls and works to save his town from an impending zombie apocalypse. The movie was produced by Laika studio, the team behind the critically acclaimed 2009 fantasy animation film "Coraline."

Adult comedy "The Campaign" took the fourth spot, earning $13.4 million with a U.S. domestic total now of $51.7 million.

New drama "Sparkle," about three young sisters pursuing fame as singers in 1960s Motown, earned $12 million and the weekend's No. 5 spot. The movie stars "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks and features the final movie appearance by the late Whitney Houston. Sony produced the movie for about $14 million.

"Dark Knight Rises," the final movie in a Batman trilogy starring Christian Bale, took in $11.1 million at North American (U.S. and Canadian) theaters over the weekend. The blockbuster has grossed over $409.9 million in the U.S. and Canada since its July 20 debut.

Another newcomer, "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" from Walt Disney Co earned $10.9 million opening at North American (U.S. and Canadian) theaters, hitting the No. 7 spot.

The movie tells the story of a couple who wishes for a baby and soon finds an unusual, mud-covered boy standing at their door. Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton star. Disney spent about $25 million to make the movie, and has made $15.2 million since its opening on Wednesday. The studio had projected five-day sales of about $15 million.

Focus Features, a unit of Comcast Corp's Universal Studios, released "ParaNorman." Sony Corp's TriStar Pictures released "Sparkle."

Why A Grizzly Bear Safari Is Even More Amazing Than It Sounds

Intrigue and reverence often go hand in hand. People are generally afraid to approach grizzly bears (for many reasons), yet their curiosity greatly piques their interest. Instead of living in total fear, achieve your desires in a safe way by participating in a grizzly bear safari. It can be a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these majestic animals, as their natural habitat (like most large mammals) is quickly dwindling along with their population numbers.

Experiencing grizzlies in their natural setting is simply an awe-inspiring experience, as these creatures must live near their food source, the almighty salmon. When you go on a grizzly bear safari in Bella Coola, you'll see the sights and sounds and sheer impressive magnitude that nature has to offer. You and the rest of the company will enjoy the gentle breezes, rolling greens and running streams as you observe the bears in their natural habitat. No longer will you have to gaze at the grizzlies from behind the bars at a zoo.

While many people have a traditional vision of a safari in their heads, this is not the only method of exploration while looking for the grizzly bears. In the Bella Coola region, guests on these tours will also travel on the water as they watch these almighty creatures eat their beloved salmon. Walking tours will also be part of the adventure, so you, your family and friends can truly take it all in. The mountainous forests can make finding these majestic animals difficult, and your facility that operates and runs your safari will more than likely have designated viewing areas that are protected and do not disturb the wildlife.

Going on a grizzly bear searching expedition by yourself can prove to be very dangerous, and you should not attempt to do so. A guided safari ensures that you are in the hands of a trained and knowledgeable individual. Such guides can help to calm any of the fears that you have about such a journey. Additionally, you will learn so much about these creatures. The learning does not stop there though. As you journey through the magnificent landscape, you will hear information and tales about the culture and history that are an intrinsic part of the region. You'll learn how these bears and the land came to be partners.

Perhaps there are some activities in which you do not wish to participate. Luckily, these safaris can be arranged to meet your specifications, and you do not necessarily need to go on every journey with the group. Italian PM sees end of crisis getting closer

RIMINI, Italy (Reuters) - Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said on Sunday the end of the economic crisis in his country was in sight and that the euro zone must not let the single currency become a source of friction between the north and south in the bloc.

Speaking at a conference in Rimini, he said the euro zone's third largest economy was in better shape than it was a year ago while people were more aware of the difficulties it faces.

"A year ago we thought less than we do today that we were in a crisis but I believe we were in it more," Monti said. He said that he saw the end of the crisis "getting closer in some ways".

Since taking over from Silvio Berlusconi, who stepped down in November to avert a Greek-style debt crisis, Monti has embarked on a reform program including labor market and pension overhauls, spending cuts and deregulation.

Monti said his government had not expected its reforms to have immediate growth-stimulating effects on the recession-hit economy.

But he said he had hoped they would have led to Italy's borrowing costs falling faster than they have done, which would have made it easier for the recovery to begin.

Monti reiterated his concerns about tensions between northern and southern countries in the euro zone, as the bloc attempts to resolve its economic crisis to keep the single currency intact.

"It would be a major tragedy if the euro, the crown of the European dream of integration and unity ... became a factor of disintegration, of the birth of prejudices, of north against south," he said.

Monti warned earlier this month in an interview with German magazine Der Spiegel that he was concerned about growing anti-euro, anti-German and anti-EU sentiment in the parliament in Rome, noting the threat of a "psychological break up" in the bloc.

A German-led austerity drive in Europe has provoked anger and resentment in southern European countries such as Greece and Italy, while exasperation is growing in northern countries over the economic woes in the southern states.

How to Ensure Your Child Has a Pest-Free School Year

(NewsUSA) ? While you?re thinking of class schedules and school shopping, you should also spend some time reviewing bed bug prevention tips, as these pests can find their way into the classroom often unbeknownst to their human hosts.

Bed bugs in the U.S. continue to be a problem across the country, invading nearly every facet of people?s lives. According to a 2011 study by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), one in five Americans has come into contact with bed bugs. These pests, which resemble thin apple seeds, feed on human blood and are incredibly difficult to eliminate. While they are not known to transmit disease, their bites can cause rashes and welts on those affected.

The NPMA offers these tips for families looking to avoid bed bugs this school year:
For Students in grade PS-12

NPMA?s survey found that more than 36 percent of professionals treated schools and day care centers for bed bugs last year, up from 10 percent the year prior. Fortunately, when bed bugs are found in schools, they tend to be few, and full-blown infestations are rare. Nevertheless, it is wise to take preventative precautions.
*

Regularly inspect your children?s belongings.
*

If bed bugs are prevalent in your area, consider housing all items coming from school in a sealed plastic bin.
*

Wash and dry cloth items returning from school in hot temperatures.
*

Ask school administrators whether they have bed bug detection and elimination plans.
*

Teach children, if old enough, to be on the lookout for signs of bed bugs and to share information about friends who report them at home.
For College Students

NPMA?s survey also found that 54 percent of pest professionals have treated bed bugs in college dorms, up from 35 percent the previous year. As these pests don?t make good study partners, there are several things students and parents can do to protect against them.
*

Inspect suitcases prior to packing for a return to school, especially if they have been used for travel during vacation.
*

Before putting sheets on the bed, inspect the mattress and seams for telltale stains or spots.
*

Inspect the entire room before unpacking, including behind the headboard.
*

If you are considering bringing ?secondhand? furniture to campus, take caution and inspect it for evidence of bed bugs.
*

Thoroughly check all belongings when students return home for weekends and breaks.

Black and Decker screwdriver senses your hand movement to adjust speed, direction (video)

DNP Black & Decker

Were you feeling the need for new tech to replace the switches that control direction and speed on your cordless screwdriver? Us neither, but we're not the braintrust at Black & Decker, which just launched the Gyro 4V Max, the "world's first motion-activated screwdriver." The company put an InvenSense MEMS gyroscope in the new model, so all you have to do to change the direction or speed is rotate your drilling hand one way or the other in varying amounts. After you've polished off that Ikea shelf, it should be ready the next time you haul it out of the toolbox, with a Lithium-ion battery that stays juiced for as long as 18 months. Judging by the video below the break, it actually looks pretty clever, and at $40, why not start dragging your tools out of the stone age?

More than a month after an explosive investigative report accused Penn State's ousted president of burying child sex abuse allegations against Jerry Sandusky, Graham Spanier has so far avoided criminal charges ? unlike two of his colleagues.

That doesn't mean he's in the clear, according to legal experts.

As attorneys for Athletic Director Tim Curley and retired Vice President Gary Schultz try to persuade a Dauphin County judge to dismiss the case against them on Thursday, Spanier remains vulnerable to criminal charges over his alleged role in a scandal that has shaken Penn State to its core, outside lawyers said.

Former FBI Director Louis Freeh's university-commissioned report that accused the ex-president ? along with Curley, Schultz and football coach Joe Paterno ? of covering up a 2001 allegation against Sandusky could help lay the groundwork for a prosecution.

"The Freeh report, whose findings of fact and conclusions were not challenged by PSU, suggests potential liability for Spanier," said Paul DerOhannesian, an Albany, N.Y., defense attorney and former sex-crimes prosecutor who has been following the Penn State case.

"If I was in the state AG's office, I would seriously be looking at" a criminal case against Spanier, said another defense lawyer, Will Spade, a former Philadelphia prosecutor who worked on a grand jury investigation of priests about a decade ago.

A spokesman in the attorney general's office, Nils Frederiksen, declined to comment, citing an "ongoing and active investigation" into the Sandusky matter.

Asked whether he expects Spanier to face charges, Spanier's attorney, Peter Vaira said, "I have no idea."

There could be a number of reasons why prosecutors haven't moved against Spanier, who led Penn State for 16 years until leaving office under a cloud four days after Sandusky's arrest. Prosecutors could have evidence that contradicts the findings of the Freeh report, for example. Or they could simply be taking their time to strengthen a potential case against Spanier, DerOhannesian said.

"There is nothing particularly unusual in no charges yet filed," he said via email. "After all, how many years did it take any prosecutor to charge Jerry Sandusky?"

Sandusky, the longtime architect of Paterno's football defense, was convicted in June of sexually abusing 10 boys. He awaits sentencing on 45 counts.

Curley and Schultz were charged in November with failing to report suspected child abuse, as required by law, and perjuring themselves before the grand jury investigating Sandusky. They have pleaded not guilty. The defendants themselves will not be in court Thursday as their lawyers argue their case.

Spanier, meanwhile, has kept a low profile since the early days of the scandal that cost Paterno his job, tarnished Penn State's reputation and led to unprecedented NCAA sanctions against the football program. He has issued a handful of written statements since the July 12 release of the Freeh report but has otherwise largely disappeared from public view.

What is known is that Spanier performed top-secret national security consulting work for the federal government. His security clearance underwent a four-month review after Sandusky's arrest in November, and was reaffirmed ? proof, suggested Spanier, that he has done nothing wrong.

Spanier also remains a tenured faculty member at Penn State, although he is on sabbatical until December and it is unclear whether he will return. University spokesman Dave La Torre said only that Spanier's "status is under review," declining to elaborate.

There's no indication that Penn State has launched disciplinary proceedings against Spanier, who did not respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.

The release of the Freeh report has raised questions about Spanier's handling of a 2001 allegation by a former graduate assistant who caught Sandusky sexually assaulting a young boy in the Penn State football showers.

Spanier, in his five-hour interview with Freeh, told investigators that Schultz and Curley gave him few details of the incident, telling him only that Sandusky had been "horsing around" with a boy. Spanier said he told Curley that Sandusky would be banned from bringing youths into Penn State showers.

"Had I known then what we now know about Jerry Sandusky ... I would have strongly and immediately intervened," Spanier, whose professional expertise is in family therapy and sociology, wrote in a July 23 letter to the Penn State board of trustees. "Never would I stand by for a moment to allow a child predator to hurt children."

Yet the Freeh investigation uncovered documents from 2001 that seem to indicate Spanier had deeper knowledge, including an email in which the president appeared to agree with Curley's decision to keep the 2001 assault from child-welfare authorities, and instead work directly with Sandusky and Sandusky's charity for at-risk youths.

"The only downside for us is if the message isn't 'heard' and acted upon, and we then become vulnerable for not having reported it," said Spanier's email, dated Feb. 27, 2001. "The approach you outline is humane and a reasonable way to proceed."

Spanier has denounced the Freeh report as "full of factual errors," asserting it took the email out of context and "jumps to conclusions that are untrue and unwarranted." Penn State accepted the conclusions of the report, which the NCAA used as the basis for leveling severe penalties against Penn State, including a $60 million fine, a multi-year bowl ban and a reduction in athletic scholarships.

Penn State is paying the legal bills of Spanier, Curley and Schultz under an indemnity policy for trustees and officers. Spanier has also retained the title of president emeritus. La Torre, the Penn State spokesman, said Spanier is contractually entitled to it.

In a July 23 letter, the once-powerful and nationally regarded president lamented that his reputation has been "profoundly damaged." He asked the board of trustees for an audience so he could give his side.

So far, he's gotten no response.

Study: Pigs at state fairs may carry swine flu

A pig at the 2012 Ohio State Fair in Columbus (Kyle Robertson, Columbus Dispatch/AP)

Double bacon corn dogs aren't the only porkers that can be dangerous to your health at state fairs around the country. A new study led by University of Minnesota veterinarian Dr. Jeff Bender warns that many of the seemingly healthy pigs on display at state fairs this summer may in fact be carrying the swine flu.

"This study just shows that viruses are shared between pigs and people," Bender told the Star Tribune. "We were expecting, boy, if pigs had virus then they should be [feverish], sick." Instead, the results, taken from samples at the 2009 Minnesota State Fair, indicate that spotting the virus may be harder than expected.

Test results found that 11 of the 57 tested pigs?19 percent?had the H1N1 flu virus. A similar test in 2008 turned up zero infected pigs. The tests were taken when the H1N1 was believed to be at peak levels of infection across the country.

The findings were published in the August 2012 edition of the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.

While the test results from a single year cannot predict the potential number of pigs infected with the flu virus this year, it still raises concerns. As the Tribune notes, more than 150 people around the country this year have already contracted a new type of swine flu after coming into contact with pigs at state fairs.

On August 9, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that 158 cases of swine flu were reported that week alone, a five-fold increase of the new viral strain, largely centered in Indiana and Ohio.

Nonetheless, Bender says that he believes people are most likely to blame for the sick pigs.

"What we do know is that there was a lot of circulating virus in people," he said. "Our suspicion is there probably was an exhibitor who brought it in and shared it with the pigs."
