EYES ON LONDON: A queen's approval, Chinese gold

LONDON (AP) ? Around the 2012 Olympics and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details of the games to you:

___

HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE

Seems even the queen can't resist the opportunity to act with Daniel Craig.

The British monarch didn't need much persuading to take part in the brief flick that electrified the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony, says Jackie Brock-Doyle, the spokeswoman for the organizing committee.

"She liked the whole concept Danny brought together," she says ? presumably right down to the detail of having the queen's corgis, Monty, Holly and Willow, similarly take starring roles.

The matter was presented to her majesty by organizing committee chairman Sebastian Coe last year.

CLOSE SHAVE

British gymnast Louis Smith knows a thing or two about making a statement. The eccentric 23-year-old ? the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist on pommel horse ? is known as much for his well-coiffed hair and elaborate tattoos as his elegant routines.

A couple of days before the biggest ? and perhaps final ? meet of his life, Smith slipped out of the Olympic village to his home in Peterborough to visit his barber.

"I could have used one in the village, but I didn't want to tell him he was doing it wrong," Smith said.

He returned with a distinctive do, with shaved sides and a meticulously groomed flowing flattop.

Smith says the "hip" cut is designed to grab the kind of attention he thinks the sport needs.

AN AMAECHI MOMENT

Strolling through security to enter Olympic Park, former British basketball star John Amaechi says he has been quite pleased with how his home country has opened these games.

The center paired with gymnast Nadia Comaneci to take the torch to the roof of the North Greenwich Arena earlier this month and is eager to see how Britain opens against powerful Russia in its men's basketball opener on Sunday.

"It's been wonderful so far, but the real work hasn't even started," Amaechi says. "That will tell the tale."

I SEE BY YOUR OUTFIT ...

Dressed head to toe in the British flag ? or, rather, AS the British flag ? Mick Burn wanted to find a spot along the road course to cheer cyclist Mark Cavendish.

But his outfit was so extreme, the man from Watford in Hertfortshire couldn't make it more than a few feet (meters) at a time without being stopped by fans wanting to pose for a picture with him.

"I've been mobbed all day," he says. And he's delighted by that fact.

It took him almost two years and 200 pounds (more than $300) to assemble the outfit, which consisted of everything from "posh golf pants," a waistcoat, his watch, eyeglasses and even his underwear. The toughest item was the sport coat, which cost him 50 pounds (about $75) on eBay.

Burn had thought his niece, rower Lucinda Gooderham, would be competing in these games. She didn't qualify, but he vowed to keep fine-tuning the outfit for Rio.

SMOOOOOOOOOOTH

"Louis Smith as smooth as strawberries and cream on pommel horse. It's like he's in slow motion, control in amazing." ? AP's Will Graves tweets from the gymnastics venue. A spectacular pommel horse by Britain's Smith capped the day for the British, who finished almost 2.5 points ahead of China with at a total of 272.420. Team finals are Monday.

GHOST TOWN

On a Saturday lunchtime, London's main shopping area, Oxford Street should be packed. Saturday afternoon, it is surprisingly empty of the usual crowd of Londoners and tourists. Were there a lot of late nights last night at opening ceremony parties or are the crowds in different parts of London enjoying the events?

SPIRIT WILLING?

Not everyone in London is infected with the Olympic spirit. A couple of hundred demonstrators have gathered to protest the gigantic corporate and security sides of the games. Among them is one woman with a home-made cross stitch sign declaring: "Bugger the Olympics."

Beneath it, a second one adds: "And the Jubilee." Apparently she's no fan of the monarchy, either.

Most of the protesters say they don't object to the sporting competition. But they resent being told they have to support the games.

MY LEGS WERE SHAKING

American Timothy Wang is already out of his first Olympics.

He lost his first table tennis match in four straight games on Saturday to North Korean Kim Song Nam. The experience lasted just a few minutes, beaten 11-5, 11-4, 11-7, 11-4 in the knockout tournament before about 4,000 fans.

He probably spoke for many first-time Olympians ? and even experienced ones ? about being very nervous.

"I walked out and as soon as everyone started cheering, I started to get goose bumps. My legs were shaking while I was playing. The nerves definitely kicked in. I tried to focus before the match, but I really wasn't expecting it when I came out. Over here every match is like center court and all the eyes are on you. In tournaments in the U.S., very few people are there."

ROYAL SIGHTING

It's just how she likes it. Princess Anne crossed the road in front of me in Green Park. And, despite the crowds, she went mostly unnoticed, although there was a smattering of cheers.

The queen's daughter is as low-key as a British royal can be. And the British public seems to respect her wishes.

TECH FAIL

Japanese volleyball coach Masayoshi Manabe is missing his trusty iPad. Turns out there's no wireless for the coaches to use at the Earls Court venue, something that isn't going over well.

"There is no wi-fi available here. All the teams are in the same condition. We are talking to the organizers," Manabe said through a translator.

Japan swept Algeria 3-0 in the opening match. For now at least, looks like they can do without technology.

SLOW PHELPS

Michael Phelps was surprisingly slow in the 400-meter individual medley prelims Saturday. He barely made the field and will swim in Lane 8 in the final.

No big deal, right? All lanes are the same.

Not exactly, according to a tweet from former Olympic swimmer Summer Sanders: "Lane 8 is worse than Lane 1 because Phelps breathes to the right on the way home. He won't see the rest of the field."

I CRIED LIKE A BABY

London Mayor Boris Johnson says he spent all night dreaming about the opening ceremony and thinks it was better than China's stunning show four years ago.

"Call me chauvinistic, call me jingoistic, but I think we knocked the spots off Beijing last night," Johnson said.

"From the beginning I was crying like a baby. I just thought it was brilliant."

He lauded the cultural complexity of Danny Boyle's production.

"We weren't just Beefeaters and Big Ben. It was the real story of this country," he said.

BILL GATES

The table tennis venue is abuzz with talk that Bill Gates will show up on Saturday ? and he'd see a familiar face in young American singles player Ariel Hsing.

The 16-year-old Californian is friends with Gates and fellow billionaire Warren Buffett, having played demonstration matches against the two earlier this year at Berkshire Hathaway's annual meeting.

She knows them well enough to call them "Uncle Bill" and "Uncle Warren." Is that cool or what?

Will the UN reverse its ivory ban?

Delegates overseeing a worldwide endangered species treaty have adopted a plan to allow ivory to be legally traded on the global market.

Delegates overseeing a 175-nation endangered species treaty adopted measures Friday intended to curb smuggling of elephant ivory and rhino horn, including a new plan to eventually allow ivory to be legally traded again in global markets.

The plan for allowing ivory to be traded legally for the first time in more than two decades will be fine-tuned and presented again in October, then considered for final approval next March in Bangkok. It was among the most hotly debated items at a weeklong meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, known as CITES, that ended Friday.

Some 300 delegates in Geneva agreed by consensus to a series of measures and sanctions on trade in endangered species. The ivory plan envisions a resumption in trading only from existing stocks gathered from elephants that have died as a result of natural causes.

A global ban on ivory trading took effect in 1989 to curb elephant poaching in Africa, but in the past decade the problem grew again with rising Asian demand for ivory chopsticks, statues and jewelry.

The long-running global debate over elephants has focused on the benefits of raising revenue from legal ivory sales that could be used to pay for conservation measures and ways of protecting local communities that live in close proximity to large and sometimes dangerous animals.

Proponents also have argued that legalizing the trade could dampen prices and, therefore, demand for ivory on the black market, but some conservation groups have said they remain skeptical that it will work and that in fact sales could only increase poaching. No culling or poaching would be authorized under the plan.

Much of the focus was on how to strengthen enforcement while also dampening consumer demand. Delegates agreed that effected nations must do more to control their markets and combat international ivory smuggling.

"You may say that there has been a sort of polarization here (over ivory) ? will you ban it totally, or will you allow something and if you allow something, you may also encourage smuggling," said Oystein Storkersen, the head of nature management in Norway who chairs one of CITES' main committees, told reporters. "As long as there is strong demand in the consumer countries, we probably will see people willing to risk going for ivory in the source countries."

Delegates also agreed to require that Vietnam, one of the biggest consumers of rhino horn, report back by September on how it is cracking down and to verify that rhino hunting trophies are taken for non-commercial reasons.

In parts of Asia, such as Vietnam, rhino horn can fetch the equivalent of U.S. street values for cocaine. It is crushed and consumed by people who believe it can cure diseases including cancer, fever and even hangovers, but doctors generally dispute that.

Delegates suspended trade in five reptiles ? the African chameleon in Niger, Fea's chameleon in Equatorial Guinea, the girdled lizard in Mozambique, and the yellow-headed temple turtle and orange-headed temple turtle in Laos ? and one African tree, teak, in Ivory Coast.

Delegates also decided to monitor crocodiles in Colombia, birds from the Solomon Islands, and a dozen other captive-breeding and ranching operations around the world.

But they agreed to lift previous suspensions and allow sustainable trade to resume for African teak and cherry in Congo, and for African grey parrots in Cameroon.

Seeking Water Damage Restoration St. Louis | Industrial Mechanical

Many people never even think about the possibility of ever needing help with water damage until after the flood happens. Water damage can happen many ways. Most commonly, there is a flood of the general area or a pipe that burst while the homeowners or business owners were away for the weekend. There are many things that can cause damage to the home. This damage may or may not be covered by your homeowner?s insurance policy. Whether or not you receive any financial assistance with the damage should not be your main concern. What you do need to focus on is the company that is going to help you.

It is important to make sure that you are acting fast when there has been water damage to your home. If you sit on it and wait, you will find yourself with more problems than you started with. Most of the time, when the cost really starts to become a lot of money, it is because the homeowners or business owners waited until the very last minute to call someone in to help. Mold can begin to grow and things that could have been saved end up needing to be completely replaced. This is where things start to really add up.

By calling in a highly qualified restoration St. Louis company in a timely manner, you will be able to save yourself a lot of money and frustration. Trying to clean up from the water damage on your own is not something that is advisable. Only a trusted water damage restoration company will be able to handle such a large task in an efficient amount of time. Within a day or two, the entire affected area can be completely taken care of. This is something that might take you a couple of weeks to do on your own and the fact that it takes that long for one person means that mold could be growing and spreading before everything is taken care of.

When you are ready to call in a restoration company to help you with the water damage that your home or business has received, you will want to make sure that you are going with a company that you can truly trust. A company that has been in the St. Louis area for many years is probably a more trusted source than a brand new company. Do not be afraid to ask to see their proof of insurance and make sure that you are getting your quote in writing. Also, make sure that you are getting a confirmation on just how long it will take to completely clean up from the water damage. Paying by the job is always cheaper than paying by the hour.

Exclusive: Huff Post executive Lauren Kapp to exit after just three months

(Reuters) - Lauren Kapp, one of Arianna Huffington's key advisors at the Huffington Post Media Group, is leaving the company, effective August 1.

She is leaving for personal reasons, an AOL spokeswoman confirmed.

Kapp was hired by AOL's influential news site in April as senior vice president global strategy, marketing and communications.

Kapp did not immediately respond to calls for comment.

Before joining AOL, Kapp spent a decade at NBC Universal where she was the top communications executive and a member of NBC News president Steve Capus' inner circle. She was instrumental in promoting and branding some of the news division's most popular programs including "Today," "Nightly News with Brian Williams" and "Meet the Press."

The differences between NBC and the Huffington Post are vast: NBC is part of a huge corporate conglomerate controlled by cable operator Comcast Corp and its news division has a long, storied history.

The Huffington Post, founded in 2005, is a scrappy upstart that has rewritten the rule book in how news is presented and consumed on the Internet with its mixture of aggregation, heavy use of photos, original reporting and commentary.

In 2011, AOL acquired the Huffington Post for $315 million. Under the wing of AOL, the Huffington Post has expanded internationally and editorially with a masthead with boldface names such as former New York Times editor Timothy L. O'Brien and former Newsweek political correspondent Howard Fineman.

This year it won one the most prestigious award in American journalism, the Pulitzer Prize, for David Wood's series about the challenges facing wounded American soldiers coming home from war.

NBC attempted to buy the Huffington Post before AOL made the blockbuster acquisition. "We tried for the last 18 months at NBC to buy the Huffington Post; we could never agree on price is why it never got done," Former NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker said in February 2011.

The Care and Feeding of Olympic Athletes

FRIDAY, July 27 (HealthDay News) -- It seems there's virtually no end to the power and stamina of Olympic athletes, which is due in part to the detailed guidance they get from experts about the right amount and type of food they need.

So what do Olympic athletes eat? A lot.

On average, they need to consume between 8,000 and 10,000 calories a day, compared to just 2,000 to 2,800 calories a day for the average moderately active man, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

The science of fueling athletes for elite sports goes way beyond caloric intake to include percentages of carbohydrates versus proteins, quantities of fluid and the timing of meals and snacks.

"There is a huge range of different needs, depending on the event and how much speed, endurance and strength the athlete needs," said Dr. Christine Gerbstadt, a registered dietician and anesthesiologist in Gaithersburg, Md.

The advice athletes get has changed a lot in the past 20 years, Gerbstadt said. "You used to see an NFL football team sit down to a huge steak dinner before a game," she said. "No more."

Instead, the new approach is designed to feed athletes not just a combination of foods they need prior to an event, but to ensure that they ingest the right nutrients to help repair their muscles for the next competition, Gerbstadt said.

There are three phases to consider when planning the nutritional needs of athletes, Gerbstadt explained. An hour or two before an event, the Olympians should have an easily digestible light meal -- ideally oatmeal and a banana with milk or yogurt. An hour or so before the competition, they also need 16 ounces of water.

Hydration is a big issue, said Amy Jamieson-Petonic, a registered dietician and director of wellness coaching for the Cleveland Clinic.

"Athletes can lose 2 percent to 3 percent of their body weight from dehydration, which can negatively impact their aerobic performance," she said.

Trainers and coaches regularly check their athletes' specific gravity and osmolality (measures of dehydration), she added.

Some sports are more likely to lead to dehydration than others, Jamieson said. Swimmers typically are at high risk for the condition because they typically can't grab a sip of water in the middle of the event.

If an athlete's event is an hour long or less, they shouldn't drink water during the competition, Gerbstadt said. If it's more than an hour, the amount of water they should drink depends on the temperature, humidity and how much they actually perspire.

Gerbstadt recommends drinking 16 ounces of water, juice or a sports drink anywhere from every 15 minutes to every hour, depending on the individual's needs.

"They shouldn't go overboard on the fluids," she said. "It's actually better to be under-hydrating than taking in too much fluid."

After the event, in the "recovery" phase, the goal is to help the athletes' bodies bounce back quickly. The average Olympian burns about 800 calories an hour, but that can be replaced gradually over four to eight hours, Gerbstadt said.

She advises athletes to eat a quick recovery snack as soon after the competition as they can -- preferably 20 to 30 grams of protein and carbohydrates.

"A fruit smoothie with protein powder would be ideal, or a turkey sandwich is great," she said. "Without the immediate snack, there will be a prolonged recovery time of broken-down muscle fibers."

For most Olympic athletes, one of the hardest aspects of nutrition is finding the time to consume all the calories they need, said Jamieson-Petonic.

"They're training so hard, they have to literally plan to eat and drink multiple times a day," she said. "Because their nutrient needs are so high, they have to schedule meals and snacks very carefully."

The guidance that nutritionists offer Olympic athletes is also highly individualized, going beyond their sport to their particular preferences. "Everybody's got something a little different in their sports bottle," Gerbstadt said.

Although most people will never experience the athletic demands Olympians face, there are some important lessons from the nutrition experts for everyone who exercises:

  • If you wonder whether you get enough hydration when you exercise, try weighing yourself first thing in the morning and then again right after your workout. The decrease in weight will represent the amount of fluid you lost, Jamieson-Petonic said. You'll need to replace every pound you lost with 24 ounces of fluid, she added.
  • Concerned you might be dehydrated? It will probably be evident through your performance. "You feel like you just can't go on, your body can't do what it's used to doing," Jamieson-Petonic said. "You can walk but you can't run."
  • Don't roll out of bed and go straight to a 5K run without some breakfast, Gerbstadt said. "Be sure to get some carbohydrates, lean protein and fluid on board before you go."

Some rain but not enough to stave off crop losses

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Light showers overnight in the southwestern U.S. Midwest were too little too late to prevent further losses to corn and soybean yields, and next week will bring the return of high heat and drought, an agricultural meteorologist forecast Thursday.

Rain in the northern Midwest this week improved corn and soybean crop prospects, while heat and dryness in the southwestern section continued to stress crops, said Andy Karst, meteorologist for World Weather Inc.

"There should be some improvement in areas like the Dakotas and Minnesota. They have had some good rains of up to an inch or more, and there should be more rain and more improvement over the next week," Karst said.

Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Illinois got some rains overnight, but they were too light to do much good. As a result, there will still be declining yields in those areas, Karst said, especially for corn.

"Corn is already brown so whatever yield has been established for corn that will be the final count," he said.

Karst said there had been forecasts for 1.5 to 3 inches in portions of the southwestern Midwest, but the rains were lighter than had been predicted.

There was generally a half inch or less, with locally heavier amounts, mainly in the north into Iowa of 1 to 1-1/2 inches. Heavier rainfall was very localized, he added.

"Shenandoah, Iowa got 1.5 inches, the biggest downpours were in the north into Iowa but they were pretty isolated," Karst said.

Karst said hot weather would continue in the southwest with highs in the 90s to low 100s degrees Fahrenheit, but more moderate temperatures in the 80s and low 90s would prevail elsewhere.

Commodity Weather Group (CWG) on Thursday said roughly two-thirds of the Midwest would get up to 0.50 inch of rain or more by Monday.

Thundershowers overnight in the southeast included at least a half inch of rain in 40 percent of Iowa and close to 25 percent of the Midwest overall.\

Scattered showers will extend eastward on Thursday into Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, with additional rain likely in the central and northwestern Midwest Saturday through Monday.

CWG said the rains would temporarily ease moisture stress, mainly aiding soybeans.

Hot and dry weather is expected to return to much of the southwestern Midwest by the middle of next week, according to CWG.

Laughing Your Way To The Bank With These Auto Insurance Methods

Description:

Having an expensive car or car that is considered a sports car will often increase the price one pays for auto insurance. If one does not like the sound of that then they should consider getting a different type of car. It will not only save them insurance money but often money off the car itself.

When considering insurance for a young driver, be sure that it is known to the insurance provider that they will only have access to one car. This will cut the rates considerably, especially if the least valuable and safest car is chosen. Having multiple cars can be a blessing for convenience, but when rates are considered, it is not a good idea.

A great tip for getting affordable auto insurance is to see if you are eligible for any group or organization discounts if you are a member of any groups or certain organizations. If you are, you could potentially save a lot of money on your auto insurance. However, you need to know if you have to purchase through them in order to receive this discount.

Many auto insurance companies believe that good students are better drivers and offer good student discounts for your young driver. Taking some time to stay involved in your child?s schoolwork to keep their grades high enough to take advantage of this discount can be a smart move. Check with your insurance company for the GPA needed to qualify.

Do your best to shop around when looking for a lower auto insurance policy premium. Don?t just renew your policy, study the fine print to see if its terms or your conditions have changed. Another company may have better rates, but you won?t know until you look. Most agents give rates over the phone and others do so online.

Before choosing the auto insurance policy that you think is right for you, compare rates. Comparing rates has been made easy with so many online insurance companies. Many of these companies will compare rates for you. Go to a couple of these sites and get many quotes from each before making your decision.

Do not automatically assume your rental car is covered if it is stolen or damaged in any way. Rental cars are often not covered under most auto insurance policies. If it is not covered, you can add coverage for about one or two dollars more per month to your premium.

Don?t just get the basic coverage that your state requires and think you are off the hook. Make sure you really analyze the value of your car and potential problems you have before deciding on a final policy. Many times the basic requirement is not much more than liability insurance and this can leave you high and dry.

Make sure when you are comparing different insurance plans that you are comparing apples to apples. One company might offer you a rate that seems like an incredibly good deal, but when you read the details you find out that your deductible is much higher, or that there are huge fees for paying monthly instead of annually.

Doing something simple like putting a car alarm on your automobile can ultimately save you hundreds of dollars over the life of your insurance policy. Statistics show that vehicles with alarm systems are less likely to be stolen, and any vehicle less likely to be stolen poses less of a risk with an auto insurance company.

When you are looking for car insurance, try to purchase it online. Many car insurance companies tend to offer a reduction by filling out an application online. This is because most of the application process this way is automated so they do not have to spend money on processing it.

As long as your auto insurance is in accordance with state law, you should not have to purchase a more comprehensive package. This is a great way to save money. If you are a safe driver in a relatively safe area, you can drop certain features like collision coverage and end up saving a bundle of money.

Do not settle for the first auto insurance company that you find. You may be missing out on special discounts or rewards. For instance, some insurance companies offer discounted premiums for accident-free drivers, or for people of certain professions. Some even give discounts to college students who maintain good grades.

Before buying a new car, you should research the frequency with which the particular model is targeted by thieves and vandals in your area. Cars that are popular with thieves are unpopular with auto insurance companies. They can and will charge a higher rate for a model that is especially attractive to criminals.

When dealing with an auto insurance claim, always keep all of the information related to the claim with you at all times, in a pocket or a purse. Claim settlements are often slowed down by the client not having information handy with the insurance company contacts them, meaning they?ll have to wait until that evening to get things moving.

Car insurance can be extremely complex. Hopefully after reading these tips through, you feel a little more clear and confident about how to handle such matters. Keep what you read in mind in order to save your stress, time, property, and money in future car insurance dealings.

Emmy Nominations 2012: Watch Nick Offerman, Kerry Washington Announce Nominees Here (VIDEO)

Emmy Nominations 2012

Watch the 2012 Emmy nominations here.

The 2012 Emmy Awards nominations will be announced Thursday morning, July 19 at 8:40 a.m. ET by "Parks & Recreation" star Nick Offerman and Kerry Washington, the leading actress on "Scandal." TV fans can watch a live stream of the ceremony here.

Last year's proceedings produced a classic live TV moment when "Mike & Molly" star Melissa McCarthy, who was hosting the nominations ceremony, found out she was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. McCarthy, shocked and flustered by the honor, yelled out, "Yikes!" and coached herself to "keep it together."

In an interview with the AV Club, Offerman pondered how he might react if a similar situation presented itself this year. "I guess the first impulse would be to announce it while belching. Or maybe Kerry Washington could announce it while I vociferously pass gas. That would seem the most appropriate," he joked.

The 2012 Emmy Awards will air live Sunday, September 23 on ABC and be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

Ambassador Bridge Bomb Threat: U.S.-Canada Span Reopens After 5-Hour Search By Authorities

July 16 (Reuters) - The Ambassador Bridge, a busy international border crossing linking Windsor, Ontario, with Detroit, was closed for five hours on Monday following a bomb threat.
But investigators using bomb-sniffing dogs found nothing suspicious and the span reopened to traffic early Tuesday morning, authorities on both sides of the border said.
"No bomb or device was detected on the bridge," Detroit's emergency management agency said in a statement. It called the incident "closed."
Police on the Canadian side began removing barriers and allowing vehicles back onto the 7,500-foot (2,286-meter) bridge shortly after 1 a.m. EDT (0500 GMT), a dispatcher with the Windsor Police Department said.
The shutdown of the busy crossing came less than a week after the Detroit Windsor Tunnel, a nearby cross-border route, was closed by a bomb hoax.
In a statement, the Detroit International Bridge Company said Detroit police received the threat shortly before 8 p.m. EDT (0000 GMT).
The company said the threat was "similar" to the one that closed the tunnel last week -- but provided no additional details.
While authorities investigated the threat, traffic was diverted to the Detroit Windsor Tunnel as well as the Blue Water Bridge, said Scott Vetor, a supervisor with the Windsor Police.
The Ambassador Bridge, which opened in 1929, is the busiest commercial border crossing in North America and is a particularly important route for commercial traffic.
More than 25,000 vehicles, many of them trucks, use it every day to pass over the Detroit River.
The bridge is owned by Detroit billionaire Manuel "Matty" Moroun. (Editing by Philip Barbara and Lisa Shumaker)

Will Robin appear in 'Dark Knight Rises'?

By Cody Delistraty

Spoiler warning: Possible clues to events in "The Dark Knight Rises" follow. A goofy sidekick who spews eye-rolling catchphrases has no place in Christopher Nolan?s upcoming ?The Dark Knight Rises.? Although the campy Dick Grayson (aka Robin)?doesn't fit?with Nolan?s gritty franchise, fanboys and fangirls still ceaselessly search through featurettes, trailers and TV spots for the slightest of clues that Robin will be a part of the series? finale.

While it is indeed possible that the Boy Wonder could show up in ?Rises,? he?d be altered so substantially to fit the film?s dark, epic tone that he?d be nearly unrecognizable as his comical comic book self. The young, acrobatic sidekick was a more serious character during the so-called Golden Age of Batman from the late 1930s to the early 1950s. Yet, soon thereafter, he was given a campy demeanor, ?Holy (fill in the blank), Batman!? exclamations and a jubilant youthfulness that has defined his character to this day.

Cue Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the baby-faced star of ?(500) Days of Summer.? His?"Dark Knight Rises" role as police officer John Blake could be Robin?s daytime identity? -- at least, that's what Mark Hughes? Forbes piece claims. Yet Hughes? contentions are on less than solid ground. Among other things, he believes the bat-shaped chalk symbols shown in the featurette are drawn by Gordon-Levitt?s character; and, because of their vague resemblance to the Nightwing emblem (another of Robin?s identities) and the fact that, when flipped upside down, the chalk looks slightly like a robin, John Blake therefore must be Robin. ?Mind. Blown.? he writes.

Likewise, a well-circulated freeze-frame from the trailer shows fans of the fictional Gotham Rogues football team holding a ?Rogue? sign with the ?R? in the same shape as the ?R? on DC?s ?Robin? comic books. For many, this is ironclad evidence of Robin?s existence in the ?Rises? world. Empire Online, however, was quick to note, ?most of (the extras) brought their own props and costumes,? so the sign could be just one individual's design choice.

Then again, Gordon-Levitt seems like too?major of an actor?to simply play an idealistic cop, a relatively minimal part.

It?s generally agreed that if Robin were to show up in ?Rises? he would be in the form of his Golden Age self: a useful, responsible assistant to Batman and his fight against evil?-- embodied by Tom Hardy?s Bane in ?Rises.??A dorky, catchphrase-rattling?Robin wouldn't fly.

While it?d be essentially impossible to fully develop the Robin mythos in one movie (even one pushing three hours, as "Dark Knight Rises" does), his introduction?here?would allow Warner Bros. to create a spin-off franchise.

If there?s one sturdy clue that Robin?might show up, it?s the fact that his character can be later mined for profit in subsequent films.

"The Dark Knight Rises" hits theaters on July 20.

Dialogue Between the Vatican and the Assyrian Church to Resume

Posted GMT 7-13-2012 23:58:46

Thrissur, India -- Talks between the Roman Catholic Church and Assyrian Church of the East (ACoE) on ironing out their differences and a possible merger would resume on October 4 at the Vatican.

"The main agenda of the third and final stage of talks would be about the Pope's stand if both Churches came together together," said Mar Aprem, Senior Metropolitan of ACoE and Patriarchal Delegate to India.

The noted Church historian and Aramaic scholar said a decision to resume the talks was taken at the recent eight-day 14th Holy Synod of the Assyrian Church at Chicago (USA), which was attended by 13 prelates from the US, Europe, Canada, Iraq, Australia, Iran, New Zealand, Lebanon and India.

Mar Yohannan Yoseph and Awgin Kuriakose were the other bishops from India at the synod, he said.

It was also decided to send a representative delegation comprising Metropolitan Mar Meealis Zaia, Bishops Mar Odisho Oraham, Mar Awa Royel, Synod Secretary and Archdecon William Toma for preliminary talks, he said.

The dialogue was established in 1985 with a view to ironing out some of their differences, he said.

In the first round of talks, Mar Dinkha IV, head of Assyrian church, and Pople John Paul II signed a common Christorlogical Declaration, which solved the vexed issue of Theotokos (Mother of God), held dear by Roman Catholic church and Christotokos (Mother of Christ), which the Assyrian church stood by, he said.

Another difference was on Vatican insisting on accepting the seven traditional sacraments like Baptism to five by the Assyrian Church. This was also solved with finalisation of a sacramental declaration in 2004, though not signed in the second phase, he said.

"The hitch in smooth finalisation of the issue will be the determination of the place of Pope and Catholicos patriarch, the supreme head of the Assyrian Church," he said.

The Synod also decided to have a dialogue with the Greek Orthodox Church, with about 200 million faithful the world over, with which there were some minor differences, Aprem said.

FILE - In this March 8, 2011 file photo, Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel, right, and university President E. Gordon Gee listen as athletic director Gene Smith speaks during a news conference in Columbus, Ohio. As the country absorbs the independent report released Thursday, July 12, 2012, on the Penn State sex abuse scandal, some see it as more than an indictment of one school. They see it as underscoring how major-college sports, football in particular, have run amok. When Gee heard Tressel concede he had reason to believe several star players were taking money and free tattoos from a suspected drug dealer and yet he had told no one, Gee was asked if he had considered firing Tressel. (AP) ? It was a throwaway line, intended to lighten the mood after an ominous revelation by one of the most decorated college football programs in the land.

Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee had just heard his head football coach, Jim Tressel, concede that he had reason to believe several star players were taking money and free tattoos from a suspected drug dealer and yet he had told no one. Tressel started most of those players throughout the 2010 season and a bowl game anyway, failing to alert anyone in authority ? a clear violation of NCAA rules and his own contract.

Gee, an endowment rainmaker wearing his trademark bow tie, jumped in to defend Tressel and then, asked if he had considered firing his coach, uttered an off-hand crack.

"Let me just be very clear," Gee said with a grin, "I'm just hopeful the coach doesn't dismiss me."

The joke fell flat, but echoed around the country. It confirmed what many already believed about the balance of power in college sports today: some football teams run universities, not the other way around.

Now that has been underscored by the independent report former FBI Director Louis Freeh issued on Thursday. The report said Penn State officials, including widely admired coach Joe Paterno and the university president, protected their cash-cow football program instead of young boys who were assaulted by former Nittany Lions assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

The report indicated a clear choice was made by those running the school.

"The most powerful men at Penn State failed to take any steps for 14 years to protect the children who Sandusky victimized," Freeh said.

Freeh's report said that Paterno and other officials hushed up allegations against Sandusky for fear of bad publicity and, by implication, all that bad publicity could bring ? a loss of power, prestige, fame and money.

"People have attached a $50-million price tag on Penn State football," said Dan Lebowitz, executive director of Sport In Society at Northeastern University. "Obviously, people made an egregious decision to err on the side of the $50 million rather than on the side of the rights of children."

To those who may be shocked the situation in State College got so out of hand, people who study sports have a message: Don't be so surprised.

College coaches and their teams bring in truckloads of cash, feeding a beast that sometimes overwhelms many of the loftier goals of a university. Examples have been around since the first leather helmet, but seem to have multiplied in recent years.

"In these small towns, in these bubbles, the main thing is these sports teams and the coaches," said Murray Sperber, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and author of several books on the negative effects of big-time sports on higher education. "I can't believe people didn't know, but they didn't want to know. So there were huge amounts of deniability."

The Penn State debacle is just the latest example of problems that skeptics blame on the culture of major-college athletics.

Ohio State ultimately vacated all its wins from that 2010 season, including a Sugar Bowl victory over Arkansas. Tressel was forced out for his actions, though fans still held a pep rally supporting him at his house. He has now landed at the University of Akron, as a vice president outside of athletics.

Southern California was hammered by the NCAA for allowing an agent to pay Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush and his family. The Trojans lost their 2004 BCS national title, 30 scholarships and two years of bowl eligibility. And yet the penalties may ultimately amount to a speed bump for USC, which is expected to contend for a national championship this season as it returns to bowl eligibility.

Dozens of Miami Hurricanes took money from a shady booster now in prison for running a pyramid scheme. The payouts and gifts went on for years, and the NCAA is still investigating the case.

How does all this happen?

The answer can be found partly in packed stadiums on autumn Saturdays. Two weeks after Sandusky was charged last November, for instance, Penn State beat an Ohio State team still under the shadow of the "Tattoo U" scandal before a sellout crowd of more than 105,000 people in Columbus.

Neither scandal could stop the passion of fans, whose love for their schools brings in not millions but billions of dollars across the country, paying for other sports, building natatoriums and rec centers, and luring the coaches who win with salaries of as much as $6 million for 12 games each fall.

Those same coaches ? including Paterno, who won a major-college record 409 games ? have incredible power and must police themselves to do the right thing. Sometimes there are few other checks.

In the Freeh report, a janitor at Penn State told investigators why he did not report an incident in 2000 when a colleague saw Sandusky molesting a boy in a Penn State shower room.

"(It) would have been like going against the President of the United States in my eyes," he said. "I know Paterno has so much power, if he wanted to get rid of someone, I would have been gone."

The janitor, who was not identified, added that "football runs this University" and that the "the University would have closed ranks to protect the football program at all costs."

Many in the community did close ranks last year. When Paterno's job was in peril, students rallied at his home and then poured into the street after he was fired.

Somewhere along the way, Penn State's officials apparently lost their way, the Freeh report said. At some point, maintaining King Football and keeping the machine running overtook the most basic human emotions.

Bobby Bowden, the retired Florida State coach who is second to Paterno in all-time wins at the Division I level ? and whose team was sanctioned for a major academic cheating scandal ? said he thinks the Sandusky case will spark new vigilance, particularly around child abuse.

"I think it has awakened everybody in the country. I don't think there is a college professor, a college administrator or college coach that has seen what's happened who wouldn't say this must never happen again," he said. "You can't let things like this slide by."

The feeling was much the same in Columbus, where the Buckeyes will not be eligible for a bowl game this season.

"Creating an environment where everyone is empowered to communicate, share and report any incident, real or perceived, is important," Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said.

Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon maintains it is possible to run big-time athletic programs ? specifically football teams ? and avoid letting it get too big, partly by using tight campus communities not to insulate but to keep close tabs on what's happening.

"These programs are not spread out over large expanses of geography, there are a limited number of people connected and they're typically a short walk from the administration office," Brandon said.

"There's no reason in the world that big-time college football programs can't have the appropriate controls. It doesn't mean there can't be problems from time to time, but there's no reason the model can't be properly supervised like any other organization."

Sperber, the professor at Cal, wasn't so sure.

"I feel sorry for Penn State. If you say 'Penn State' to the average American, they're going to say 'Sandusky' and 'pedophilia,'" he said. "Eventually they'll go back to Penn State and Nittany Lions, and all of that. I would hope people would learn (from this), although I've lived long enough to see so many instances where nobody learned anything."
