More Peeks Inside Justin Bieber's Would-Be Dream Home ...

Friday, March 30, 2012, by Rob Bear

The pop star Justin Bieber, for all his obvious fortune, has not had the best luck in the real estate market of late. First, the glassy modern Hollywood Hills home he first so desired was apparently bought out from under him by a fellow celebrity, and the guy renting that house at the time, Ashton Kutcher. Now, the teen idol has some more prosaic real estate problems. The Calabasas, Calif. house he settled on has apparently run into trouble with the lender's appraiser. The Spanish-style home, most recently listed for $6M, has just been appraised for much, much less, meaning the deal might not go through. Bieber will have to front more cash or walk away thanks to a regulation passed in the wake of the mortgage crisis that requires lenders to loan based on the appraised value. Then again, this kid is, according to Forbes, worth more than $53M and continues to rake it in. In short, if he wants this place, he'll get it. In the meantime, take a look at some more photos from the kid's could-be hacienda.

News and Society Blog-Environmental Info: Can Agroforestry Save ...

Forestry funds have traditionally focused their resources on afforestation and reforestation as well as the production of timber and timber products. It isn't so common for forestry funds to choose projects that, besides trees, also incorporate crops. That can soon change, as there is a new investment opportunity, which may just be gaining momentum.

Starbucks, the largest U.S. coffee chain, announced last week that climate change could severely affect the world's coffee supply and, thus, put your morning caffeine fix in jeopardy. In an interview for The Guardian, Starbucks sustainability director Jim Hanna said: "What we are really seeing as a company as we look 10, 20, 30 years down the road - if conditions continue as they are - is a potentially significant risk to our supply chain, which is the Arabica coffee bean."

Hanna further explains that hurricanes, resistant pests, mudslides and soil erosion are causing significant decreases in crop harvest in coffee farms across Central America, where most of Starbucks' crop suppliers are located.

Unfortunately, Starbucks aren't the only ones, who are seeing the alarming trend regarding the future of the drinkable black gold and one of the world's most traded commodities. According to the Smithsonian, a study based on 7,000 farmers in Mexico and Central America predicts that global warming trends will shrink coffee supply by as much as 30 per cent by 2050.

There is, however, a simple solution, which, if not reverse, may at least slow down theeffects of climate change on world coffee supplies, and that solution is agroforestry. The method of agroforestry combines crop planting with species of trees, which mutually help each other grow, especially in severe environmental circumstances.

Agroforestry isn't a new phenomenon on coffee plantations. A report by the U.S. nonprofit and independent research organisation Resources for the Future, claims that, in 1998, 95 per cent of El Salvador's coffee was shade grown. And the benefits of shade-grown coffee seem to be pretty promising.

During research conducted in Sumatra, the World Agroforestry Centre observed that, while coffee does not have to be grown inside a forest, shading the bushes with trees protects coffee plants against too much sun. In full sunlight, the Centre claims, coffee plants get exhausted by their rapid bean production, while in the shade, they produce their fruit more gradually. At the same time, the lifespan of the bush is extended, prompting it to produce more coffee in the long run.

Moreover, the slower ripening of berries caused by tree shading is found to have positive influence on the flavour of coffee. There is also reduced weed pressure in coffee agroforestry plantations, because coffee is more shade tolerant than weeds are.

Trees are known to protect the topsoil and to facilitate the formation of soil organic matter. Certain leguminous tree species enrich the soil with nitrogen by obtaining it from the air and making it available in the soil. Coffee plants then use the nitrogen to grow and mature. Shading also provides for what the Centre calls "microclimate" similar to that of the forest, reducing the risks of disease and insect attacks.

Another report by The American Phytopathological Society explains that agroforestry systems "could also modify pests and disease incidence compared with monospecific plantations."

Probably the most comprehensive research was conducted by experts from the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center. By reviewing more than 50 studies on shade-grown coffee farms in regions ranging from Central and South America to Indonesia over the past 15 years, experts concluded that shade-grown coffee production had significant advantage to sun-grown coffee farms. Here are some key findings:

? Agroforestry increases soil carbon, soil nitrogen and enzyme activity - all essential for soil fertility and plant health. Nitrogen-fixing trees in shade-grown coffee can put up to 100 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare per year into the soil, potentially reducing the amount of fertilizer a farmer would have to apply by 25 to 30 per cent.

? In Venezuela, sun coffee systems suffered twice the soil loss from erosion compared to shaded systems.

? In Nicaragua, the carbon content in the soil (an indicator of soil fertility) of shaded coffee was found to be 18 per cent higher than that found in coffee with little or no shade.

? Soil moisture in sun coffee farms is 42 per cent lower compared to coffee farms that have leafy foliage as canopy.

? Agroforestry creates a hospitable environment for richer biodiversity, including bird species. A study in Guatemala found that birds can reduce herbivorous insect presence on coffee from 64 to 80 per cent, and excluding birds from coffee plants resulted in greater insect damage to coffee leaves.

? In a study in Jamaica, researcher excluded birds and saw a 70 per cent increase in the proportion of coffee fruits infested with the Coffee Berry Borer, coffee's most damaging insect pest.

Considering the above findings, why aren't more forestry funds investing in agroforestry coffee plantations? These mixed systems have all the benefits of forests in terms of land value, timber production and carbon sequestration, but they also incorporate the added financial benefits that come from growing coffee.

As most forestry funds have come to learn by now, project diversification in terms of geographic location and types of species planted is important for mitigating the risks associated with investing in forestry. Adding coffee crops to already existing forests, or vise versa will not only contribute to reducing investment risks. It might just be the solution to saving your steaming cup of coffee.

Are the gadgets a boon, or a distraction? (AP Photo/Kevin Wolf)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Medical student Gregory Shumer studied the electronic health record and scooted his laptop closer to the diabetic grandfather sitting on his exam table. "You can see," he pointed at the screen ? weight, blood sugar and cholesterol are too high and rising.

The man didn't reveal he was too nearsighted to see those numbers, but he'd quietly volunteered that he'd been ignoring his own health after his wife's death. The future-Dr. Shumer looked away from the computer for a sympathetic conversation ? exactly the point of Georgetown University's novel training program.

As the nation moves to paperless medicine, doctors are grappling with an awkward challenge: How do they tap the promise of computers, smartphones and iPads in the exam room without losing the human connection with their patients? Are the gadgets a boon, or a distraction?

"That's the tension I feel every day," says Dr. Vincent WinklerPrins, a family medicine specialist at Georgetown. The medical school is developing one of a growing number of programs to train new doctors in that balancing act, this one using actors as patients to point out the pitfalls ahead of time.

Across the country at Stanford University this summer, medical students will bring a school-issued iPad along as they begin their bedside training ? amid cautions not to get so lost in all the on-screen information that they pay too little attention to the actual patient.

Face your patient, excuse yourself to check the screen and put away the gadget when you don't really need it, say Stanford guidelines that specialists say make sense for physicians everywhere. And, of course, no personal Internet use in front of a patient.

"The promise of these devices to augment the delivery of clinical care is tremendous," says Stanford's Dr. Clarence Braddock. He uses a secure app on his iPad to pull up patient charts if he's called after hours no matter where he is.

Braddock helped develop Stanford's standards understanding there are different hurdles. Middle-aged doctors may be less comfortable with the technology and take longer with it. Younger ones who grew up texting while multitasking may not realize how intrusive patients might find the devices. Even Braddock has a confession: To his embarrassment, his phone once beeped an email alert about a sports tournament while he was with a patient.

It's not just a matter of etiquette. If the doctor spends too much of your 15-minute visit typing or staring at a screen, you have to wonder: What if I have a symptom that just got missed?

"If the screen is turned away from the patient, they don't know if you're looking at their electronic health record or playing solitaire or looking up stocks," notes Dr. Glen Stream of the American Academy of Family Physicians. A longtime user of computerized records in his Spokane, Wash., practice, Stream makes sure to show his patients what he's doing ? especially when seeing pictures on the screen can help them better understand a health condition.

Electronic health records, or EHRs, are considered the future of health care for good reason ? they can help prevent medical errors. For example, the systems can warn if doctors are about to prescribe a drug that could interact badly with another one the patient already uses. As these computerized charts become more sophisticated, they also have the potential to spur more efficient care: no more getting another X-ray just because you forgot to bring in your last scan if the doctor can call it up digitally.

About a third of doctors report using electronic records, double the number since 2008, says a report this month in the journal Health Affairs. Many more doctors are expected to adopt them by 2015 or face cuts in Medicare payments.

The challenge in the intimate exam room: Don't let the gadget distract from your main job, "which is helping patients with their lives," says Georgetown's WinklerPrins. He limits screen time in front of his own patients by typing notes into their charts after they leave.

Hence, the training for new doctors.

A group of actors gathered at Georgetown one recent morning, each there to play the role of an older diabetic seeking care for the first time since a spouse's death. WinklerPrins watched on a monitor outside the room as medical students conducted a 15-minute office visit. They used computerized records while giving each actor-patient test results, setting a treatment plan and sending an electronic prescription to the pharmacy.

Afterward, the "patients" offered valuable feedback. One was irritated that her would-be doctor got stuck e-prescribing and, her mind on the computer, kept repeating the same question rather than saying, "Give me a minute."

Down the hall, actor John Askew Sr. praised Shumer's bedside manner but explained the computer screen was too far away for him to see.

"If you said, 'Can you see?' I would have felt less disengaged," said Askew, from Washington's Maryland suburbs.

The students see the value of electronic health records but also how easy it is to be distracted with all the clicking and scrolling.

"When I have the computer, I may be less personable, but my notes are more thorough," Shumer, of Farmington Hills, Mich., told his professor. "It's easier to have a relationship when the computer is not there."

Hopefully, the systems will get less clunky, WinklerPrins responded: "We don't lose, in the meantime, the focus on the patient."

PayPal Looks To Startup Past, Product Future With Marcus As President

The PayPal BlogeBay CEO John Donahoe announced this morning that David Marcus, the former CEO and founder of mobile payments startup Zong and PayPal Mobile VP, will be taking over as PayPal's president. As you may know, former president Scott Thompson departed PayPal in January to be Yahoo's CEO. Marcus joined PayPal last year when the payments giant?acquired Zong for $240 million. Marcus stepping into the top spot at PayPal is not particularly surprising considering his extensive experience in the mobile and payments world, but it's interesting that eBay chose a Silicon Valley startup entrepreneur (as opposed to an exec with large company experience) to lead its crown jewel. We had a chance to chat with both Donahoe and Marcus about the next era of PayPal under Marcus' leadership. Donahoe explains to us "David is the right guy for the right time at PayPal. PayPal is on the cusp of an enormous opportunity and David is a product visionary," he says. "He knows how to create beautiful product experiences, and can match that with PayPal's scale."

Moffitt Cancer Center researchers find it does not play a role in surgical complications or in survival

TAMPA, Fla. -- Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla., have found contrary to previous studies linking inferior outcomes in patients with gastrointestinal malignancies to higher body mass index (BMI) that in their study of BMI and negative outcomes, there was no such link. They concluded that BMI was not associated with either surgical complications or esophageal cancer patient survival.

Their study was published in the current online issue of the Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, published by the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract.

"The incidence of esophageal cancer in North America is rising," said study co-author Kenneth L. Meredith, M.D., assistant member at Moffitt and chief of the Esophagogastric Oncology Section. "Corresponding to that rise, there has been a dramatic rise in overweight and obese people as defined by the World Health Organization's guidelines indicating those having a BMI of 25 to 29.9 as being overweight and those who are obese as having a BMI of over 30."

According to the researchers, the increase in obesity and the increase in esophageal cancer has been linked, as has obesity been similarly linked with other kinds of cancers. Obesity is recognized as a risk factor for esophageal cancer. What remains in question, however, is whether a high BMI affects post-surgical complications and overall survival among esophageal cancer patients who have been treated with chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

"The correlation of obesity with surgical risks and postoperative survival is more important given the rise in obesity rates, yet more clarity on potential correlation is needed," said Meredith. "The literature shows mixed study results."

In their paper, the authors cited a number of studies that correlated lower BMI with better outcomes for a variety of cancers as well as studies that found no prognostic significance correlating higher BMI with poorer outcomes.

Because of the prevailing belief that patients with a high BMI tend to have more surgical complications as compared to normal weight patients, the Moffitt researchers examined esophageal cancer patient data on BMI for links to surgical risk and postoperative survival, especially for those patients with high BMI.

Their study included 303 esophageal cancer patients treated with chemotherapy, radiation and surgery who were stratified by their BMI to include those with BMIs less than 25 to greater than 35. The only demographic differences were in gender, with a higher proportion of males in the BMI 25 to 30 group.

"Our study demonstrated no significant differences in overall survival or disease-free survival in relation to BMI for patients with esophageal adenocarcinoma who underwent surgery after prior treatment with chemotherapy and radiation," said Meredith. "Additionally, there were no differences in perioperative complications or mortality associated with BMI. In short, our data failed to demonstrate a link between BMI and surgical outcome."

World News - Report: Syria accepts Kofi Annan's plan to end violence

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 8:20 a.m. ET: Syria accepted a ceasefire and peace plan drawn up by Kofi Annan, the U.N. and Arab League special envoy said on Tuesday, even as Syrian troops thrust into Lebanon to battle rebels who had taken refuge there.

On a two-day visit to Beijing, Annan told Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao that he faced a long and difficult task in his mission to end fighting in Syria, but global cooperation with China and other countries was the only way to do it.

"I indicated that I had received a response from the Syrian government and will be making it public today, which is positive, and we hope to work with them to translate it into action," Annan told reporters in Beijing after meeting Wen.

"I have a six-point plan which the Security Council has endorsed, dealing with issues of political discussions, withdrawal of heavy weapons and troops from population centers, humanitarian assistance being allowed in unimpeded, release of prisoners, freedom of movement and access to journalists to go in and out," he said. "So we will need to see how we move ahead and implement this agreement that they have accepted."

Finally, UN reaches agreement over Syria efforts

The Syrian opposition, meanwhile, welcomed the government's acceptance of a U.N. peace plan, a member of the Syrian National Council said.

Syria's rebel fighters are desperate for arms and ammunition. Members of the Free Syrian Army were forced from Idlib - one of the last rebel strongholds. ITN's John Irvine reports from outskirts of Idlib, the north western city which rebels surrendered last week.

Bassma Kodmani told The Associated Press by telephone that "we welcome all acceptance by the regime of a plan that could allow the repression and bloodbath to stop."

She is a Paris-based member of the opposition Syrian National Council.

"We hope that we can move toward a peace process," she said.

Incursion into Lebanon
Meanwhile, Syrian troops advanced into north Lebanon on Tuesday, destroying farm buildings and clashing with Syrian rebels who had taken refuge there, residents told Reuters.

"More than 35 Syrian soldiers came across the border and started to destroy houses," said Abu Ahmed, 63, a resident of the rural mountain area of al-Qaa.

Amateur videos from Syria were released online on Monday, purportedly showing shelling by government forces in the city of Homs. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

Another resident told Reuters that the soldiers, some traveling in armored personnel vehicles, fired rocket-propelled grenades and exchanged heavy machine-gun fire with rebels.

Regional English-language news channel Al-Jazeera has previously reported an escalation in tensions along the border. It said residents claimed the Syrian military planted landmines close to inhabited areas while, in early October, a Syrian army tank reportedly fired shells at Lebanese military targets inside Lebanon's borders.

Officials: Iranian arms used against Syria protesters

Annan called for Beijing's support and advice, according to a pool report.

"And I know you've already been helpful but this is going to be a long difficult task and I am sure that together we can make a difference," Annan told Wen.

Annan's trip to China followed a similar one in Russia, where he asked Moscow to back his mission to end fighting in Syria.

Russia and China have shielded Assad from U.N. Security Council condemnation by vetoing two Western-backed resolutions over the bloodshed, but approved a Security Council statement this week endorsing Annan's mission.

Report: Syria leader's wife says she's 'real dictator'

However, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Syrian people, not foreign powers, should decide their own fate.

Russia has said Annan has its full support and that his mission could be the last chance to avoid a protracted and bloody civil war but would need more time.

"I would like the decision on the fate of the Syrian state, society, political system and people to be taken not by the respected leaders of world powers, even by those acting in good faith, but by the Syrian people themselves, by all the levels of the Syrian society," Medvedev said at the end of a nuclear security summit in Seoul.

Susan Sarandon admits to embracing lipo

Larry Busacca / Getty Images

By Courtney Garcia, TODAY.com contributor

Not ashamed of a few personal touch-ups, Susan Sarandon recently confessed to having cosmetic surgery done on her face, and says she may do more in the future.

"I've had some lipo under my chin and under my eyes,? the 65-year-old actress tells People magazine.

Sarandon, who currently stars in the Duplass Brothers? film, ?Jeff, Who Lives at Home,? also suggests she could embark on additional work down the road, if she can keep her natural look in the process.

"I have these two huge frown lines here (on my forehead),? Sarandon explains. ?But if you can't move your face or you're unrecognizable, I don't see how that's a productive enhancement. You don't want to look like a female impersonation of yourself."

Sarandon?s statements are bold in lieu of the typically silent, aging Hollywood, where even younger stars have been afraid to admit they?ve gone under the knife. She also, for the first time, acknowledges rumors about her two-year relationship with 34-year-old Jonathan Brinklin, commenting, "Dating is such a stupid word. You can say...We are collaborating in a lot of different areas."

Since splitting with longtime partner Tim Robbins in 2009 after 23 years together, the actress and Oscar winner for 1995?s ?Dead Man Walking? has been mum on the subject of romance until now. She was also questioned about her businessman beau when she appeared on ?The Wendy Williams Show? on March 14 to discuss her film, and new role modeling for Neiman Marcus.

Susan Sarandon makes 65 look good! Check out some of the sexy pictures of Susan from the new Neiman Marcus catalogue.

?We hear that you?have another gentleman in you life?? Williams asked the star, who wouldn?t comment specifically, but laughed at the talk show host?s joke she was ?gettin? some.?

Commented Sarandon, ?Well, I?m very relaxed.?

Fans are appreciating the actress? candid demeanor, and speaking out in her praise.

?I respect her for admitting it,? comments a Yahoo! reader going by hah in regards to the actress? plastic surgery. ?It was done well so she didn't have to publicly address it. If everyone who had something done would say it, it would go a long way informing the public about what is realistic and what is not. I am so tired of the 'I eat very healthy and do yoga' lie.?

What do you think about Sarandon's candid comments about plastic surgery? Share you thoughts on Facebook.

Pet training guides: Housetraining your cat | Newsolio

One of the most frustrating aspects of owning a cat for many people is getting kitty to use the litter box all the time, every time. This article will outline some simple tips, and a bit of basic cat psychology that will make housetraining your cat painless and effective!

Pet training guides: Housetraining your cat

First and foremost, it is important that your cat knows where the litter box is! This may seem overly simplistic, but it?s amazing how many folks will bring home a new cat, turn it loose in the house and expect it to find and use the litter box all on its own. A very well trained cat may, but for your average cat, or especially a kitten, that?s a great way to make your carpet (or couch, or bed?) kitty?s favorite new place to go potty! Before you bring home a new cat, it?s a good idea to have a single room set up where you can contain the cat for a few days to a week before introducing it to the whole house. This will give the cat plenty of time to get used to where the litter box is, and learn the correct place to relieve them selves. Most cats are very clean by nature, and will happily use a box if it is convenient and comfortable for them. Establishing a good habit is much easier than breaking an old bad habit.

Once your new cat is comfortable using the box while contained to one room, you can let him roam the house. If you have a young kitten, it is a good idea to take the kitten to the box to relieve its self after eating, or first thing upon waking up. Kittens don?t have the control an adult cat has, and can find themselves with the sudden urge to go too far away from the box to make it (much like human children who are learning to use the toilet!). If you have a very large, or two story home it is a good idea to have more than one litter box to ensure it?s always more convenient for your cat to get to an appropriate place, than an inappropriate one.

If it?s clear that your cat knows where the litter box is, but is still not using it 100% of the time then you will need to move onto further problem solving. It?s important to keep in mind that cats learn much better from positive reinforcement than from punishment. It is much more effective to praise your cat for doing good, or prevent an accident from happening than it is to punish your cat after the fact.

If you have a cat that has always been good about using the litter box, but is suddenly going in other places it could be an indication of a health problem. Many cats will urinate in inappropriate places when they have a bladder infection (and a heavy worm load can cause inappropriate defecation). In this case, taking your cat to the vet for a check up should be done before you take any other corrective actions.

Once your cat has a clean bill of health, he will hopefully go back to using the litter box. Or, if you have a new cat that is having issues the following are some suggestions that may help:

First, make sure all the areas where the cat has urinated or defecated in the past have been very thoroughly cleaned. The best cleaners for eliminating pet smells are those that contain active enzymes. If you have moved into a new home, and the former owner had pets it?s a good idea to go ahead and thoroughly clean all the carpets and floors.

Second, take into consideration any changes in your cat?s environment. Have you added a new pet? A new baby? Changed your schedule? Cats are very sensitive to change, especially the addition of a new cat. It may be necessary to have a litter box for each of your cats. If there have been other changes in your life, spending a little extra time petting and soothing your cat can sometimes help.

Third, it is extremely important that the litter box be kept clean. Many cats will refuse to use a dirty box. Ideally, the box should be cleaned at least twice a day. Picky cats may require it to be cleaned after each use!

Fourth, make sure your litter box is comfortable for your cat. Make sure it?s not too big, or too small. Some cats will refuse to use a covered litter box, some must have their privacy! It may be necessary to try a few different litter boxes and see which one your cat prefers. If you have a small kitten, make sure the kitten cat get into the box!

Fifth, make sure you are using a litter that your cat likes. There are so many different litters on the market now from very fine textured clumping litters to very coarse recycled wood and paper litters. If you are changing litter, do so slowly adding a little more of the new litter each time you change your cat?s box. If you are unsure of a new cat?s preference, again, just experiment and see which he prefers.

Sixth, again? make sure the location of the box is convenient for your cat! If it?s in too high traffic of an area, or too far away from where your cat typically resides it very well may go unused.

And last, but not least, make sure you praise your cat any time you catch him ?in the act?. It?s important that your cat understand he?s doing good when he uses the box. By making the litter box a comfortable, convenient place to go and letting your cat know you are pleased with his use of the box you should have him reliably housetrained in no time!

Doctors Could Tell Women That Abortion Causes Breast Cancer ...

Another day, another new height reached in WTF-ery: New Hampshire?s state House has advanced a bill that would require doctors to give women ?informational materials? before an abortion that ?that inform the pregnant woman that there is a direct link between abortion and breast cancer.? Even though there isn?t.

This scare tactic just doesn?t go away, does it? Excuse me while I facepalm for the next three hours.?

The New Hampshire bill (which refers to the fetus as a ?child? or ?unborn child? throughout) mandates a 24-hour waiting period before an abortion, as well as requires that doctors provide certain ?informational materials? to women before terminating a pregnancy.

But these ?informational materials? must be gathering their ?information? from anti-abortion advocates, ?because it includes two paragraphs that directly contradict the medical community?s findings on the breast cancer/abortion ? namely, that there isn?t one.

Here?s the language of the bill, which has the rather Orwellian description of being ?An Act Relative To The Woman?s Right To Know Act Regarding Abortion Information?:

It is scientifically undisputed that full-term pregnancy reduces a woman?s lifetime risk of breast cancer. It is also undisputed that the earlier a woman has a first full-term pregnancy, the lower her risk of breast cancer becomes, because following a full-term pregnancy the breast tissue exposed to estrogen through the menstrual cycle is more mature and cancer resistant.

In fact, for each year that a woman?s first full-term pregnancy is delayed, her risk of breast cancer rises 3.5 percent. The theory that there is a direct link between abortion and breast cancer builds upon this undisputed foundation.

Sounds scary, doesn?t it? It?s a good thing a little organization you may have heard of called the American Cancer Society says it isn?t true. The National Institutes of Health and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, too.?I refer you now to this handy-dandy fact sheet on Cancer.gov called ?Abortion, Marriage and Breast Cancer Risk.? Feel free to read the whole thing, but here?s the pertinent part:

? [S]tudies consistently showed no association between induced and spontaneous abortions [aka miscarriages] and breast cancer risk.

Be morally opposed to abortion. That?s fine. I may not agree with you, but you?re entitled to your opinion. But it boggles my mind that politicians would think it?s acceptable to LIE to women about cancer. (Though I should not be so surprised given how so-called ?crisis pregnancy centers? have openly admitted to saying whatever they need to say, even lies, to prevent women from aborting.)

And so I facepalm. I liked it better when anti-abortion folks just held exorcisms.

Rhode Island Urges Homeowners to Purchase Flood Insurance

Rhode Island emergency officials are urging property owners to purchase flood insurance to protect against the kind of flooding that did massive damage in the state two years ago.

Floodplain coordinator Michelle Burnett of the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency says a flood policy is critical for homes and businesses in floodplains. March and April are the months during which flooding has traditionally affected Rhode Island most.

In 2010, the Pawtuxet River breached its banks and did millions of dollars? worth of damage.

Clooney makes quiet visit to volatile Sudan region

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? Actor and human rights activist George Clooney made a quiet visit to a volatile border region between Sudan and South Sudan last week ahead of testimony he's giving before a U.S. Senate committee on Wednesday.

Clooney made the dangerous crossing from South Sudan into Sudan's Nuba Mountains region, Jonathan Hutson, a spokesman for the anti-genocide group the Enough Project, said Tuesday. Clooney saw burned-out villages and met with residents forced to seek shelter in caves because of aerial attacks by Sudan's military.

Violence has flared along the Sudan-South Sudan border since South Sudan seceded last year, and some experts worry the conflict could grow. South Sudan shut down its oil industry this year after accusing Sudan of stealing its oil.

Wednesday's hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will examine the oil dispute and the limited access aid groups are being given to Sudan's southern regions. Aid experts say people who live in Sudan's Nuba Mountains will soon face a hunger crisis because they haven't been able to plant crops amid fear of attacks from Sudan.

Clooney traveled to what is now known as South Sudan in January 2011 as the region cast votes to secede from Sudan. The vote was the culmination of a peace deal that ended more than two decades of civil war.

After that visit, Clooney helped found the Satellite Sentinel Project, which uses satellite imagery to track military movements and attacks in the hopes of bringing attention to and potentially heading off hostilities.

On his most recent visit Clooney, met South Sudan President Salva Kiir and the country's defense minister.

John Prendergast, the co-founder of the advocacy group the Enough Project, also traveled to South Sudan last week. Prendergast and Princeton Lyman, the U.S. envoy to Sudan and South Sudan, are also scheduled to speak at Wednesday's Senate hearing.

http://www.aarkstore.com/reports/Energy-Efficient-Home-Renovations-Market-Full-Report-34631.html

Green building is no longer just a fad; in fact, energy-efficient remodeling and renovating is one of the few aspects of the U.S. construction business that still holds a positive outlook in the midst of the economic turmoil in 2009.
RSS Feed

The U.S. residential construction market was $363 billion in 2008, down 41% from its high of $620 billion in 2006. The home renovations market was $188 billion in 2008, down 18% percent from 2007. But SBI estimates that the home energy efficiency renovations market in the U.S. was $21 billion in 2008; down only 13% percent from 2007?s $24 billion.

Remodeling to improve a home?s energy efficiency instead of buying a new home has become a preferred option in today?s market. In fact, the National Association of Home Builders found that 32% of home builders also provided remodeling services in 2008. Homeowners are still seeing the benefits of improving their home?s energy efficiency even in the economic instability of 2009. With energy consciousness shooting to the forefront of the media during the 2008 oil price peak, the Propane Education & Research Council has found 80% of homeowners are now concerned about the energy efficiency of their homes.

Home builders and remodelers have been quick to provide remodeling services that are focused on energy conservation and green building practices; as an example, 85% of remodelers surveyed by the National Association of Home Builders in 2008 used energy-efficient windows on the majority of their projects. Retailers and manufacturers of building projects, residential builders and remodelers, and even state and federal organizations now have to be able to provide knowledgeable energy conservation expertise to succeed in their business.

Home energy efficiency analysis now uses a ?whole building? approach, affecting all categories of building materials, from windows and doors to insulation to completely eliminating air leaks. To fully embrace this view, this report looks at the impact energy-efficient building products are having on the renovations market in a number of categories:

? The market for energy-efficient doors and windows, caulking and weather stripping, and insulation used in home renovation projects.

? The energy-efficient appliance and lighting markets for home remodeling.

? Energy-efficient heating and cooling systems and the growing trend of energy-efficient roof renovations.
