NEW YORK (AP) ? The price of gasoline rose for the 21st straight day on Tuesday. Drivers are now paying an average of $3.72 a gallon nationwide, about 24 cents more than before the streak began.
The winter surge is being driven primarily by the rising price of oil, which has been above $100 a barrel since Feb. 10 as tensions mount between the West and Iran over its nuclear ambitions.
Gas prices are highest in Alaska, California, New York, Connecticut and Hawaii, which is tops at $4.32 a gallon. Nationwide, gasoline prices are 10 percent higher than a year ago ? and at their highest level ever for the end of February.
A steep rise in gas prices early last year caused consumers to sharply cut back on spending and brought economic growth almost to a standstill. But this year's increase hasn't caused a repeat, economists say. With hiring accelerating and incomes higher, consumers are better able to afford to pay more for gas.
Prices for other goods, such as food, are holding relatively steady after surging in 2011. Natural gas costs have plummeted recently, reducing consumers' heating bills. Those trends should offset some of the squeeze on consumers from pricier gas.
The rising price of oil isn't the only factor driving pump prices higher. Every year, refineries must temporarily idle their facilities in order to prepare them for the production of cleaner-burning gasoline that's required in summer. This briefly constrains gasoline supplies and puts upward pressure on prices.
Analysts say the national average could peak in late April as high as $4.25 per gallon.
The price of gas has risen 30 cents in a month. That 30-cent jump, if sustained over a year, would cost the economy about $41 billion. The Energy Information Agency, a branch of the Energy Department, in early February estimated that gasoline would average $3.55 a gallon this year, 2 cents higher than last year. The EIA also forecast that West Texas Intermediate, used to price oil produced in the U.S., would average $100.40 a barrel, compared with $94.86 a barrel in 2011.
WTI has risen 8 percent to around $107 a barrel so far this year. Brent crude from the North Sea, used as a proxy for the foreign oil that's imported by U.S. refineries, has gained more than 13 percent to $122 a barrel. The main reason for the increase is increased tension between Iran and the West.
On Tuesday, WTI dropped $2.01, or nearly 2 percent, to $106.55 a barrel. Brent fell $2.62, or 2.1 percent, to $121.55 a barrel.
Petroleum demand in the U.S., the world's largest oil consumer, has fallen 5.5 percent so far this year, compared with a year ago. A weekly survey by MasterCard SpendingPulse shows that Americans have cut back on gasoline spending for the past 49 straight weeks. Last week, the Federal Highway Administration said that motorists drove 1.2 percent less in 2011.
Heating oil fell by 6.26 cents to end the day at $3.2238 per gallon on the NYMEX and gasoline futures fell by 8.82 cents to finish at $3.0401 per gallon. Natural gas futures lost 8.4 cents to end at $2.519 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Death of girl, 11, in fight ruled homicide
Joanna Ramos, 11, died hours after exchanging punches with a classmate. The two girls were reportedly fighting over a boy.?KNBC-TV's Angie Crouch reports.

An 11-year-old girl who died in a fight in Long Beach on Friday suffered blunt force trauma to her head, and her death was ruled a homicide, coroner?s officials said Monday.
Long Beach police officers responded just before 6 p.m. Friday to a hospital after being notified that Joanna Ramos, who was unconscious and not breathing, had been brought into the emergency room by her family. She was taken in for surgery, placed into intensive care in critical condition, and died just before 9 p.m.
She had no visual signs of trauma to her body, police said.
Joanna and a fellow student from Willard Elementary School had been in a fight after school in an alley. With seven others looking on, the girls took off their backpacks, put their hair in a bun, said ?Go? and started hitting each other.
The fight lasted about one minute. It did not involve weapons and no one was knocked to the ground, police said.
Once the fight was over, both girls left the area and went their separate ways.

Later, Joanna had a bloody nose and wasn't feeling well so she was taken to the hospital, her family said.
Several classmates of both girls told NBC4 that the girls were fighting over a boy. Joanna's friends said the two simply could not get along.
Detectives have interviewed the other classmate and onlookers. They were also trying to identify other witnesses and anyone who knows what led to the fight.
No arrests have been made.
While the Los Angeles County Coroner?s Office will determine the cause of death, police will continue to do interviews.
Officers will present their findings to the Los Angeles County District Attorney?s Office, which will review the case and determine if any charges will be filed.
Police said no one has alleged or suggested that Joanna was being bullied.
None of the students interviewed told detectives that school officials were made aware of the impending fight.

Los terminales
Los dos primeros terminales anunciados con Windows Phone 7 fueron el Nokia Lumia 800 y el Nokia Lumia 710. El primero es un gran terminal, un gran smartphone que sorprendentemente ha logrado cautivar de nuevo el mercado de los smartphones, eso si, a una medida mucho menor que algunos smartphones Android de gama m?s alta y el iPhone. Pero es un gran comienzo. El Lumia 710 es una versi?n m?s barata, fabricado en una carcasa de pl?stico para ahorrar en costes, que por ejemplo en grandes operadoras como Movistar est?n impulsando much?simo por su precio.
Pero despu?s lleg? la apuesta de Nokia para reconquistar el mercado Norteamericano, con el lanzamiento del Nokia Lumia 900, una versi?n con pantalla m?s grande, opci?n compatible con redes LTE y una c?mara frontal para videoconferencias.
Y para este Mobile World Congress parece que llegar? el cuarto terminal, el Nokia Lumia 910, la versi?n europeizada del Lumia 900.
Pero no nos podemos olvidar del Nokia N9, primer y ?ltimo terminal con MeeGo seg?n Nokia dio a entender en m?s de una ocasi?n. Una autentica pena este terminal, que naci? muerto, porque su dise?o y su sistema operativo son bastante bonitos, una peque?a obra de arte tecnol?gica de Nokia.
Acciones
Las acciones de Nokia no son un buen indicativo de como va la empresa. Aunque internamente siempre se ha comentado que su funcionamiento es un desastre y hay demasiados cargos intermedios, Nokia en bolsa no va muy favorablemente, perdiendo valor poco a poco. Hace un a?o el valor por cada acci?n de Nokia rondaba los US$9, hoy en d?a est? entorno a los 5 o 6 d?lares.
El futuro
Aunque el futuro m?s cercano para Nokia se resume en ?m?s Windows Phone? y en empezar a desarrollar terminales mucho m?s baratos con este sistema operativo, por unificar sus esfuerzos en ecosistemas, no podemos dejar de pensar que tambi?n es parte de su futuro su uni?n con Microsoft. Aunque vamos a dejarnos de ?posibles?.
Nokia sigue desarrollando terminales, y materiales con los que fabricarlos, como por ejemplo el terminal flexible que se present? en el pasado Nokia World 2011, un terminal que funcionaba a la vez que lo pod?as girar y estrujar.
No digo que este sea el futuro de los smartphones, el de las pantallas flexibles, que la verdad aun no me termina de convencer, pero una cosa es bastante clara, algo se est? haciendo en i+D dentro de Nokia.

B?jo couldn?t be lovelier, but she?s lanky, almost gawky, with sharp features and a coolly intelligent gaze. You could see her as an Eva Green-style Bond girl maybe, but for most of the roles Hollywood has to offer attractive women her age, B?jo seems somehow insufficiently pliable?she?s too edgy and smart, too French, to inspire unbridled lust in Joe Meathead. I bet she?ll rock something on Oscar night meant to reverse that impression, though.

Description

The exam proves a student?s competency in managing, maintaining, troubleshooting, installing and configuring basic network infrastructure.
Passing the Network+ certification exam opens doors for students to land both internships and jobs as network technicians. NAF views Network+ certification as a stepping stone rather than an end in itself. The objective is to give students a taste of what it?s like to see their job horizons expand when they have a certification in their pocket. The course is meant to encourage students to get a high school diploma, go on to college, and then get higher level certifications as college graduates, such as the Microsoft Systems Engineer certification.
The course is comprised of 20 lessons which all aim to prepare students to pass the CompTIA Network+ exam.

How fast you walk and your grip in middle age may predict dementia, stroke risk
ScienceDaily (Feb. 15, 2012) ? Simple tests such as walking speed and hand grip strength may help doctors determine how likely it is a middle-aged person will develop dementia or stroke. That's according to new research that was just released and will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology's 64th Annual Meeting in New Orleans April 21 to April 28, 2012.
"These are basic office tests which can provide insight into risk of dementia and stroke and can be easily performed by a neurologist or general practitioner," said Erica C. Camargo, MD, MSc, PhD, with Boston Medical Center.
More than 2,400 men and women with an average age of 62 underwent tests for walking speed, hand grip strength and cognitive function. Brain scans were also performed. During the follow-up period of up to 11 years, 34 people developed dementia and 70 people had a stroke.
The study found people with a slower walking speed in middle age were one-and-a-half times more likely to develop dementia compared to people with faster walking speed. Stronger hand grip strength was associated with a 42 percent lower risk of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) in people over age 65 compared to those with weaker hand grip strength. This was not the case, however, for people in the study under age 65.
"While frailty and lower physical performance in elderly people have been associated with an increased risk of dementia, we weren't sure until now how it impacted people of middle age," said Camargo.
Researchers also found that slower walking speed was associated with lower total cerebral brain volume and poorer performance on memory, language and decision-making tests. Stronger hand grip strength was associated with larger total cerebral brain volume as well as better performance on cognitive tests asking people to identify similarities among objects. "Further research is needed to understand why this is happening and whether preclinical disease could cause slow walking and decreased strength," said Camargo.
The study was supported by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute's Framingham Heart Study and by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the National Institute on Aging.

Do you need a will or estate plan? | ABC Newspapers

Did you know that 65 percent of adult Americans do not have a will? Many feel that only the rich need one. For others it is one of those things that ?they will get around to someday.?
Further, did you know that 70 percent of beneficiaries mismanage or burn through inherited wealth within a short time? A Dec. 9, 2011 Forbes magazine article by Carolyn Rosenblatt reported this fact. Inadequately planned distributions can become a source of friction and dispute among family members and even in-laws or creditors of beneficiaries.
Let?s look at some of the reasons you should have an estate plan and/or will:
Who will raise your minor children if you die or become incapacitated? You have a chance to provide a caring and loving home for them. The courts will make this decision for you if you do not.
Who will manage your affairs if you become incapacitated? You need to provide a power of attorney to someone you can trust to handle your financial and other matters. Here again, the court will decide if you have not.
Blended families need a clear plan to assure that family members from different marriages are treated fairly. You need to determine what goes to the current spouse and children of prior marriages.
If you die without a will, the court will distribute your assets in accordance with state law. This could mean that they might go to someone other than whom you would wish. It can be bad for some heirs who would waste them or spend them on a destructive lifestyle. I know five young relatives who did not know how to manage inherited money. They blew it on booze, drugs and boyfriends until it was all gone in a few months.
A good plan is needed so that your spouse and family will be able to survive financially if you die. This may also involve providing an adequate amount of life insurance.
A good financial plan such as a trust can provide several protections. First, a trust avoids the legal costs and inconvenience of probating a will. It allows you to determine when and how beneficiaries receive distributions. It can be set up to keep assets in the family. Otherwise, your adult child?s spouse may wind up with them in the event of divorce or your child passes away prematurely. Trusts can also be set up so that benefits are paid out over time and under specific circumstances. They can include ?spendthrift? clauses so those funds are not paid out to one who would waste them. Typical limitations include addicted gamblers, alcoholics, drug addicts, etc.
Another area that deserves attention is the distribution of your IRA or retirement accounts. You need to properly designate beneficiaries for these accounts. There can be very significant tax consequences unless beneficiaries are designated and the beneficiaries properly handle the inherited accounts. A qualified beneficiary can use the funds over time, in accordance with the law.
Estate plans and wills should be periodically reviewed and updated ? at least once every five years. Some events that should trigger an update are marriage, divorce or death of a spouse, increase or decrease in assets and changes in federal or state inheritance laws. Other events may be the assigned guardian or trustee is no longer able to serve or you may wish to make changes.
A good estate plan can eliminate temptation to an irresponsible beneficiary by restricting access to large sums of money. An estate plan can be used to provide incentives to a child to improve. It is often a good idea to set up a plan that can last for decades or generations. It may be wise to have assets distributed when the heirs reach certain age targets such as 21, 35, 45 and 55 years of age. Distributions can be set up to occur when some needs may occur such as paying for college, family emergencies, etc.
One good practice, if you can afford it, is to give some of the ?inheritance? to heirs while you are still alive. This gives them a chance to learn how to manage it and you get to learn how well they do it.
The best practice is to get competent legal advice in setting up wills and estate plans. Online services are available if your situation is simple and straight foreword.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Kentucky finally got another test in the Southeastern Conference and the Wildcats' stingy, sticky defense helped them pass yet again and take a big step toward the regular-season conference title.
Doron Lamb hit a 3-pointer with 3:18 left to put No. 1 Kentucky ahead to stay, and the Wildcats beat Vanderbilt 69-63 Saturday night for their 17th straight win by not allowing a point inside the final 4 minutes.
"We wanted to lock up defensively," Kentucky freshman Anthony Davis said. "We needed a stop, and the only way that we were going to win the game was to lock up. That's what we tried to do."
Kentucky (25-1, 11-0) disrupted Vanderbilt with aggressive defense in the first half, and the Wildcats held off a furious charge in a sold-out and electric Memorial Gym by scoring the final eight points of the game. The young and talented Wildcats wound up holding off the experienced Vanderbilt squad that had been predicted to be their best challenge this season.
"This was two teams slugging it out, it really was," Kentucky coach John Calipari said. "(Vanderbilt) wasn't going away, and we weren't going away. We made some shots. They missed some shots. We won the game. Hats off to Vanderbilt fans. It was a great environment. It is why we do what we do, both players and coaches."
Calipari wasn't quite ready to credit his defense for Vanderbilt missing its final nine shots, saying he needed to check the tape to see if the Commodores simply missed some of those attempts. The Kentucky coach did appreciate a strong test for a team that had won its last four SEC games by 20 points.
"We need all of this. In every huddle, I kept saying this is great for us. It is what we need," Calipari said. "To be honest, I would rather we be up 23 points. They are an execution team, a veteran team, seniors. They played like that. We got better today."
Now Kentucky has a three-game lead in the conference with five games remaining.
"I don't think we're going to lose that many games," Davis said.
Lamb finished with 16 points, Anthony Davis added 15 points and seven blocks, Terrence Jones scored 14 and Marquis Teague had 13.
Vanderbilt (17-8, 6-4) led 63-61 with 4:08 to go on a jumper by Brad Tinsley. The Commodores didn't score again and snapped a four-game home winning streak over No. 1 teams. They missed a chance to pull into a tie with Florida for second in the SEC.
They had four senior starters and the top two scorers in the conference, but none of it was any match for Kentucky.
"It was a pretty good college game if you didn't care who won," Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings said. "I thought our guys really battled in the second half. We just kind of come out of the gate, gassed out at the beginning, I think. We fought hard. We rebounded hard. And, like I said, they just made a couple more plays than we did. We're very disappointed."
Vanderbilt top scorers in league play are Jeffery Taylor and John Jenkins, but neither matched their average. Jenkins led Vanderbilt with 15 points and Taylor had 13. Tinsley and Festus Ezeli also added 13 each.
Kentucky had held its previous five opponents to an average of 49.6 points with the nation's stingiest field goal percentage defense at 35.8 percent. Vanderbilt came in with the SEC's best percentage from beyond the arc, and Kentucky held the Commodores to just 8 of 21 from 3-point range (38.1 percent) ? well below their 42.1 percent average.
The Wildcats led 36-23 at halftime and had been up by as much as 14 in the first half. That included a stretch where they held Vanderbilt scoreless for five minutes.
"Digging ourselves that hole kind of cost us the game there in the first half," Taylor said.
Vanderbilt opened the second half by hitting six of its first seven shots from long range and 10 of its first 14 overall from the floor in rallying back.
Taylor, held to only two points in the first half, scored 11 as Vanderbilt chipped away at the lead, and his 3-pointer with 11:58 tied it up at 48. The Commodores got a turnover under the Kentucky basket, and Goulbourne passed to Tinsley for a dunk he celebrated with a scream, giving Vandy a 53-51 lead that was its first since 9-8.
Ezeli added a dunk for Vanderbilt's biggest lead.
Davis answered with a jumper and a dunk he finished with a free throw for a three-point play. Tinsley hit a 3-pointer before his bucket with 4:08 to go. Lamb then put Kentucky ahead to stay with his 3 from the left corner in front of the Wildcats' bench after the Commodores collapsed on Darius Miller in the paint.
"I was wide open in the corner, and I knocked it down," Lamb said.
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who played much of the second half in foul trouble, hit two free throws and Darius Miller also scored.
Taylor's 3-point attempt in the final minute was blocked by Davis before bouncing off the back of Ezeli's head.
"We missed some bunnies," Stallings said. "They pressed us and we break the press and we've got a dunk and we drop the ball, foul. We had some opportunities. We just didn't take advantage of them."

HIV Severity, Treatment Unrelated to Kids' Mental Woes: Study (HealthDay)
FRIDAY, Feb. 10 (HealthDay News) -- There's little evidence linking disease severity or antiretroviral treatment with the degree of psychiatric symptoms in HIV-positive children and teens infected around the time of birth, according to a new study.
Some experts were concerned that more severe HIV illness -- the virus that causes AIDS -- or use of specific highly active antiretroviral therapy regimens might increase the risk of mental health problems in HIV-infected youth, noted the researchers at Stony Brook University in New York.
To examine this issue, they analyzed data collected from 319 HIV-infected youngsters, aged 6 to 17, during a two-year study. One-third of the patients met the criteria for at least one psychiatric disorder.
"Analyses of HIV disease variables and severity of psychiatric symptoms revealed few specific associations, and we feel compelled to emphasize that findings were variable, mixed and at times counterintuitive," Dr. Sharon Nachman and colleagues wrote.
For example, regarding CD4 (infection-fighting cells), the researchers found that a lower entry CD4 percentage was associated with less severe depression in the patients, but a higher entry RNA viral load was associated with more severe depression.
The Stony Brook team did find some evidence of a link between certain HIV variables (such as lower nadir CD4 percentage) and quality of life and cognitive, social and academic abilities.
"We found that more severe HIV disease (indicated by the nadir CD4 percentage) was associated with worse cognitive functioning and social skills, but our analyses do not allow us to make causal inferences about these associations," the researchers wrote.
"Our data, in conjunction with findings from other groups, suggest that receptive language, word recognition and educational problems are common in youth with perinatal HIV infection regardless of virologic suppression," they said in a university news release.
The study was published online Feb. 6 in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

The coffee berry borer is one of the predominant coffee pests in the region. It can devastate crops by ruining coffee berries and the quality of the coffee. To make matters worse, it is very difficult to control. The two most common insecticides used during outbreaks are endosulfan and chlorpyrifos, both of which are known to be highly toxic to animals, including humans.
In a parallel research effort, Fabrice DeClerck, my adviser at Catie (short for Centro Agron?mico Tropical de Investigaci?n y Ense?anza), and some of his colleagues, Jacques Avelino, Amada Olivas and Cipriano Ribera, previously conducted field studies on the coffee berry borer around the Turrialba area. They found that the dispersal of the coffee berry borer may be blocked by forest patches.
If there are forest patches next to coffee farms, the forests may act as a barrier and reduce coffee berry borer outbreaks without the use of toxic chemicals or large amounts of labor. So part of my research ? in addition to investigating mammal biodiversity ? is to understand if these forest patches next to coffee farms could increase habitat value and provide corridors for mammals.
This ?coffee-forest matrix,? as it?s called, could be a win-win situation, creating a barrier for the coffee pests while protecting forests and wildlife habitat. I am interested to find out if this theory holds true. We will have to wait and see what shakes out after all the data is collected and analyzed.
For our fourth and final round of mammal sampling, we will sample each of the three sites in the same order as the other rounds: the Catie site first, then the site in Jicotea, and lastly the coffee farm in Aquiares. Each site will be sampled for approximately two weeks; we will have a total of 46 sampling nights at the three sites.
This final round of sampling at Catie yielded the highest capture rate yet for this site: 1.45 percent. Capture rate is the number of animal captures divided by the sampling effort ? the number of traps multiplied by sampling nights. For Rounds 1, 2 and 3, the capture rates were 0.78 percent, 0.71 percent and 0.66 percent, respectively. These capture rates include recaptured animals, and for this round at Catie we had quite a few recaptures. There were two male dusky rice rats ? one adult, one juvenile ? that were captured in the forest minigrid (a high-density trap area with 32 traps in a 900-square-meter area) almost every day. Two of my field assistants also saw the younger rat eating a grasshopper and a spider, which were both in the bag with him when he was being weighed. This little rat had quite an appetite!
For this round, more than half of all the captures were in the three minigrids: 34 of the 54 total captures (including recaptures). But we had only seven individuals running around being captured within the minigrid traps on a daily basis.
Also, after two rounds of zero captures, we had six captures in the organic coffee this time. All of them were of the same Oligoryzomys species ? pygmy rice rats ? tiny little mice that weighed an average of 10 grams. We have not seen very many of this species at the Catie site. More than 75 percent of all the captures for this round were dusky rice rats.
In general, we see more snakes at Catie than at our other two sites, but there seemed to be even more snakes here this round. A snake we have to be very vigilant about is the fer-de-lance, which in Spanish is called terciopelo. It is highly poisonous and abundant on farms ? not a good combination.
The weather, however, has been absolutely gorgeous. It is cool and brisk early in the mornings as we head out to the field. There are beautiful orange and yellow flowers in the treetops that stand in contrast to the bright blue skies. It is amazing to be outside hiking around our sites for such a large part of the day. This has been a tremendous effort and although it?s too early to say we are on the homestretch, the finish line is in our sights.
