Michael Frawley, chief operating officer of Atlantic City?s Atlantic Club Casino Hotel, has shed a little more light on the bid by the parent company of online poker titan PokerStars to buy the brick-and-mortar gaming joint. Crawley revealed to Philly.com that he and co-COO Eric Matevich were the apparent originators of the plan, having first approached the Rational Group with the concept three months ago. Frawley said Rational plans to ?pump money immediately? into refurbishing the casino, which will not only save the jobs of the 1,729 employees the Atlantic Club has put on layoff notice, but could add another 500 jobs to the struggling seaside gaming enclave?s workforce.

Frawley stated that PokerStars hopes to develop a 10k-square-foot data center in Atlantic City to support its online gaming operations and to set up a customer support center in Jersey City. Rational Group spokesman Eric Hollreiser was quoted as saying: ?The future of gaming is to be able to provide a mix of online and offline gaming, and our interest in Atlantic City is being able to offer that mix. The deal is based upon the vision.? (Online and offline gaming convergence, huh? Where have we heard that before?)

But Hollreiser said much depended on what Gov. Chris Christie decides to do with the pending online gambling legislation sitting on his desk, which Christie must either sign, not sign, veto or ?conditional veto? by Feb. 7. ?Our investment is predicated on the environment, and if the environment is the status quo in Atlantic City, then the investment can only be so much. If we can fulfill the vision of online and off-line, clearly, the investment grows with it.?

DELAWARE IN THE MARKET FOR ONLINE GAMBLING TECHNOLOGY
A little further north, the Delaware State Lottery has issued a request for proposals (RFP) from online gambling technology and service providers to help the state realize its online ambitions. Delaware passed full-fledged online gambling legislation ? poker, bingo, casino table games, keno and video lottery games ? in June 2012 and the plan is to be taking wagers ?no later than Sept. 30, 2013.? The RFP envisions the Delaware Lottery centrally controlling a number of branded sites owned by the state?s licensed video lottery agents, which include the Delaware Park racino, the Harrington Raceway & Casino and the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino. Delaware is seeking a backend technology platform provider, an operations management provider and various support services vendors. The RFP allows for a number of game content vendors to supply product to the system, and may ?at some point in the future integrate? with ?an internet sports wagering system, which does not currently exist.? The RFP also envisions the state?s players being able to wager via mobile apps. The deadline for operators interested in applying is March 15. A final recommendation regarding the primary and game content vendors will be given to the lottery director April 19, and the intent to award the contracts will be issued April 22.

Breast Cancer Risk ? Low Vitamin D Levels Linked to Disease ...

A prospective study led by researchers from the UC San Diego School of Medicine has found that low serum vitamin D levels in the months preceding diagnosis may predict a high risk of pre-menopausal breast cancer.

The study of blood levels of 1,200 healthy women found that women whose serum vitamin D level was low during the three-month period just before diagnosis had approximately three times the risk of breast cancer as women in the highest vitamin D group. The study is currently published online in advance of the print edition of the journal?Cancer Causes and Control.

Several previous studies have shown that low serum levels of vitamin D are associated with a higher risk of premenopausal breast cancer.??While the mechanisms by which vitamin D could prevent breast cancer are not fully understood, this study suggests that the association with low vitamin D in the blood is strongest late in the development of the cancer," said principal investigator Cedric Garland, DrPH, FACE, professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at UC San Diego.?

Analyses of vitamin D levels measured more than 90 days before diagnosis have not conclusively established a relationship between serum levels and risk of premenopausal breast cancer in the present cohort. However, this new study points to the possibility of a relevant window of time for cancer prevention in the last three months preceding tumor diagnosis?a time physiologically critical to the growth of the tumor.

According to Garland, this is likely to be the point at which the tumor may be most actively recruiting blood vessels required for tumor growth.? ?Based on these data, further investigation of the role of vitamin D in reducing incidence of premenopausal breast cancer, particularly during the late phases of its development, is warranted,? he said.

The new study drew upon 9 million blood serum specimens frozen by the Department of Defense Serum Repository for routine disease surveillance.? The researchers thawed and analyzed pre-diagnostic samples of serum from 1,200 women whose blood was drawn in the same time frame?samples from 600 women who later developed breast cancer, and from 600 women who remained healthy.?

A 2011 meta-analysis by Garland and colleagues estimated that a serum level of 50 ng/ml is associated with 50 percent lower risk of breast cancer. While there are some variations in absorption, those who consume 4000 IU per day of vitamin D from food or a supplement normally would reach a serum level of 50 ng/ml.

Garland added that a consensus of all available data has shown no known risk associated with this concentration of vitamin D, which is measured as serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D. But he urges patients to ask their health care provider to measure their serum 25(OH)D before substantially increasing vitamin D intake.

?Reliance should not be placed on different forms of vitamin D, such as vitamin D2, and megadoses should be avoided except those ordered by a doctor for short-term use,? Garland added.

Report: Missing NYC woman found dead in Turkey

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? A New York City woman who went missing while vacationing alone in Istanbul was found dead on Saturday, and police were questioning 11 people in connection with the case, Turkey's state-run news agency said.

Sarai Sierra, a 33-year-old mother of two, was last heard from on Jan. 21, the day she was to fly home. Her disappearance attracted a lot of interest in Turkey, where the disappearance of tourists is rare, and Istanbul police had set up a special unit to find her.

The state-run Anadolu Agency said the body of a woman was discovered Saturday evening near the remnants of ancient city walls and that police later identified it as Sierra's.

The agency said she was found with a head wound and a blanket near her body. She was wearing jeans, a jumper and a jacket, and still had her earrings and a bracelet.

Police reached by The Associated Press refused to comment on the case.

Sierra, whose children are 9 and 11, had left for Istanbul on Jan. 7 to explore her photography hobby and made a side trip to Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Munich, Germany. She had originally planned to travel with a friend, but ended up traveling alone when her friend canceled.

She was in regular contact with friends and relatives, and was last in touch with her family on Jan. 21, the day she was due back in New York. She told them she would visit Galata Bridge, which spans Istanbul's Golden Horn waterway, to take photos.

The body was found not far from the bridge and near a major road that runs alongside the sea of?Marmara. Here tourists often photograph dozens of tankers waiting to access the Bosporus strait.

On Saturday, police stopped traffic there as forensic police inspected the area.

Anadolu suggested Sierra may have been killed at another location and that her body may have been brought to the site to be hidden there.

At least 11 people were being questioned in Istanbul, Anadolu said, and a police official at the site told journalists that two of them were women. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters about the case. Earlier, Anadolu had said nine people were detained.

It was not clear if a Turkish man Sierra had exchanged emails with during her stay in Istanbul was among those being questioned. He was detained for questioning Friday, then released. Turkish news reports said Sierra had arranged to meet the man on Galata Bridge, but he reportedly told police the meeting never took place.

Shortly after her body was discovered, a woman came forward and told police she had seen a white car parked near the city walls as she was driving there the night of Jan. 29, Anadolu reported. She said a man was trying to remove "something" from the car.

"At that moment, I noticed a woman's hand," Anadolu quoted the woman as telling reporters after talking with police. The agency said she declined to give her name.

Sierra's husband, Steven, and her brother, David Jimenez, traveled to Istanbul to help search for her. Sierra's mother, Betzaida Jimenez, said Saturday that she couldn't talk about the case when reached in New York.

Shortly after Sierra was reported missing, Turkey set up a special police unit which scanned hours of security camera footage in downtown Istanbul in search of clues. A Turkish missing persons association joined the search, handing out flyers with photos of Sierra and urging anyone with information to call police.

While break-ins and petty thievery are common in Istanbul, the vast and crowded city is?considered relatively safe compared to other?major?urban centers. Sierra's death was unlikely to have a significant impact on tourism, a large component of the?Turkish economy.

In 2008, an Italian artist, Pippa Bacca, was raped and killed while hitchhiking to Israel wearing a wedding dress to plead for peace. Her naked body was found in a forest in northwest Turkey. A Turkish man was sentenced to life in prison for the attack. ?

Organizing Room by Room: Mastering the Master Bedroom ...

The room that is supposed to be the quiet retreat where you seek solace from a hectic day at the office or with the kids often turns into the family dumping ground. Leftover laundry to be folded, not-quite-done scraping projects and any other clutter that needs a quick hiding place seems to end up in the master bedroom.

An organized master bedroom not only gives you a personal retreat within your home, it helps you sleep better and can improve your va-voom (wink, wink?if you know what I mean). If that isn?t reason enough to get in gear and get it organized, organizing and decluttering any space in your home reduces stress caused by constantly looking a mess.

How to Start Organizing Your Master Bedroom

#1: Sort ? Figure out exactly what is in the master bedroom. A quick way to do this is to get bins and label them: to stay in bedroom, to go elsewhere, to donate, to trash, and start sorting!

#2: Gather ? Find like items and put them in a pile on the bed or floor. The reason is that people often don?t realize what they have until they see it. Once you have gathered all your handbags, for example, look for duplicates that you can purge.

#3: S-P-A-C-E ? Remember to Sort, Purge, Assign a home, Containerize and Evaluate. Purging important for clothing as an overfull closet will seep out onto the floor, dresser, and bed.

#4: Rationalize ? Review your collections from the gathering stage and decide what you want to keep and what you need to let go. A good rule of thumb is if it?s not in top form, if you haven?t worn it in a year or if you have multiple multiples.

#5: Create Storage ? Design your storage spaces within your master bedroom so that everything has a home. This includes your drawers where you will want to add drawer organizers.

#6: Limit ? Create a space for visitors to the master bedroom, like books or pet projects. Once that space is full, no more visitors are allowed to enter until something leaves. By limiting the space allocated to things that aren?t stored in the bedroom, you stop it from becoming a dumping ground.

#7: Go Vertical ? Take advantage of your vertical storage in the closet. Add bins, build extra tall shelving or add hooks to maximize the available storage.

#8: Start a Routine ? Make sure you clear off the horizontal surfaces on a weekly basis to avoid them becoming clutter magnets. The same goes for your other hot spots, like closet floors or corners.

If your master bedroom project seems overwhelming, set an organized-by goal and schedule regular time in your calendar to tackle one area at a time. The key is continuing to maintain that area so you are able to move to the next project when that one is complete.

Brian Stropolo lost his gig as an NFL replacement ref when Facebook pictures of him in Saints gear emerged just before he was supposed to officiate a Saints game.

But the pictures were far from a secret, and were even discovered by Ravens coach John Harbaugh during the preseason.

In a detailed and touching story by Jim Kleinpeter of the New Orleans Times-Picayune which centers on Stropolo?s personal struggle, Stropolo mentioned that Harbaugh brought up the pictures prior to a preseason game.

When he introduced himself to Harbaugh prior to their game against the Jaguars, Stropolo told him he had seen the photos after Googling his name.

?You?re a Saints fan,? Harbaugh said, as relayed by Stropolo.

?I said, ?I?m from New Orleans but I?m neutral. I?m from the NFL,?? Stropolo said, insisting he?d call the game fairly.

He said Harbaugh replied by saying: ?Oh no, I?m just messing with you.?

Stropolo also said he felt like he was hung out to dry by the NFL, after being part of the crew that officiated the opener, and was ranked highest in the preseason by the league.

?When we came off the field [NFL executive vice president for football operations] Ray Anderson was in the end zone high-fiving us with the biggest smile on his face,? Stropolo said. ?We walked in the locker room and Roger Goodell was standing there by himself and shook every one of our hands.

?He said, ?Guys let me tell you something, that was amazing. Y?all looked like the real deal. Y?all set the bar so high I hope the rest of the crews can come up to do what y?all did.? All of them [NFL officials] were smiling.?

The league?s reaction turned dramatically when the photos were revealed prior to the Saints-Panthers game he was supposed to call, but was removed the day of the game.

One dead in Phoenix office shooting

PHOENIX (AP) ? A gunman opened fire at a Phoenix office complex on Wednesday, killing one person, wounding two others and setting off a manhunt. Police warned the public that he was "armed and dangerous."

Authorities identified the suspect as Arthur D. Harmon, who they said opened fire at the end of a mediation session. They identified a man who died hours after the Wednesday morning shooting as 48-year-old Steve Singer.

Police say a 43-year-old man was listed in critical condition along with a 32-year-old woman.

Police didn't release the names of the wounded, but a Phoenix law firm, Osborn Maledon, said one of its lawyers, Mark Hummels, was among the wounded. The firm said he "was representing a client in a mediation" when he was shot.

According to court documents, Harmon was scheduled to go to a law office in the same building where the shooting took place for a settlement conference in lawsuit he filed last April against Scottsdale-based Fusion Contact Centers LLC.

The company had hired him to refurbish office cubicles at two call centers in California, but a contract dispute arose.

Fusion said Harmon was paid nearly $30,000 under the $47,000 contract but asked him to repay much of the money when the company discovered that the cubicles could not be refurbished, according to the documents.

Harmon argued Fusion hung him out to dry by telling him to remove and store 206 "worthless" work stations after the mix-up was discovered. Harmon said Fusion then told him that the company decided to use a competitor.

Harmon's lawsuit had sought payment for the remainder of the contract, $20,000 in damages and reimbursement for storage fees and legal costs.

Pro tempore Judge Ira Schwartz, who scheduled the meeting, did not immediately return an email seeking comment. A message left Wednesday at the home of Fusion chief executive Steve Singer also was not returned.

Hummels was representing Fusion in the lawsuit.

As police searched for the shooter, SWAT teams and two armored vehicles surrounded his house about 7 miles from the shooting scene. Police served a search warrant to enter the home.

For a time, officers, believing the shooter was inside, used a megaphone to ask him to surrender.

The gunfire at the office complex prompted terrified workers to lock the doors to their offices and hide far from the windows. SWAT officers searched the building.

"Everyone was just scared, honestly, just scared," said Navika Sood, assistant director of nursing at First at Home Health Services who along with her co-workers locked the entrances to their office.

Sood said police evacuated the office about 30 minutes after she first heard the popping noises.

The shooting took place on the same day that hearings on legislation to address gun violence were convened in Washington, with former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords testifying for stricter gun controls.

Around 10:30 a.m., the gunman arrived at the office building and got into a dispute with someone, a conflict that escalated to the point where he drew a gun and shot three people, police spokesman Tommy Thompson said.

Vanessa Brogan, who works in sales support at an insurance business in the three-story complex, said she heard a loud bang that she thought at first was from somebody working in or near the building.

She said others at the business thought they heard multiple loud noises. She said people locked themselves in offices until authorities evacuated the complex that houses insurance, medical and law offices.

Becky Neher, who works for a title company in the building, said the two gunshots she heard sounded like two pieces of metal banging against each other.

Watching from her second-story office, she saw people leaving the building.

"Someone yelled, 'We have a shooter,'" she said. She saw two victims lying on the ground outside the back side of the building. She said health care workers who have offices in the complex came out to help.

Don Jaksa, a software consultant who works in the building, said he was listening to the radio when he suddenly heard "two pops." He said he didn't think they were gunshots.

"My co-worker goes to the range all the time," he said. "He identified it as gunfire."

His co-worker then locked the door. After five minutes, they left and ran into police and someone carrying a stretcher. The police escorted them back to their office and told them to lock the door again.

They were eventually evacuated, and as he sat on a rock outside the complex, his wife called to make sure he was OK after seeing the shooting on the news.

Workers were later allowed to leave the building. Two hugged each other when they got outside.

"You don't expect this when you come to work," worker Lindsa Rincon said.
