Pope washes feet of young detainees in ritual

ROME (AP) ? Pope Francis washed and kissed the feet of a dozen inmates at a juvenile detention center in a Holy Thursday ritual that he celebrated for years as archbishop and is continuing now that he is pope. Two of the 12 were young women, a remarkable choice given that the church's current liturgical law says only men should participate.

The Mass was held in the Casal del Marmo facility in Rome, where 46 young men and women currently are detained. Many of them are Gypsies or North African migrants, and the 12 selected for the foot-washing rite included Orthodox and Muslim detainees, news reports said.

Because the inmates were mostly minors ? the facility houses inmates aged 14-to-21 ? the Vatican and Italian Justice Ministry limited media access inside. But Vatican Radio carried the Mass live, and Francis told the detainees that Jesus washed the feet of his disciples on the eve of his crucifixion in a gesture of love and service.

"This is a symbol, it is a sign ? washing your feet means I am at your service," Francis told the youngsters. "Help one another. This is what Jesus teaches us. This is what I do. And I do it with my heart. I do this with my heart because it is my duty, as a priest and bishop I must be at your service."

Later, the Vatican released a limited video of the ritual, showing Francis washing black feet, white feet, male feet, female feet and even a foot with tattoos. Kneeling on the stone floor as the 12 youngsters sat above him, the 76-year-old Francis poured water from a silver chalice over each foot, dried it with a simple cotton towel and then bent over to kiss each one.

As archbishop of Buenos Aires, the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio would celebrate the ritual foot-washing in jails, hospitals or hospices ? part of his ministry to the poorest and most marginalized of society. It's a message that he is continuing now that he is pope, saying he wants a church "for the poor."

Previous popes would carry out the foot-washing ritual on Holy Thursday in Rome's grand St. John Lateran basilica. The 12 people chosen for the ritual would always be priests to represent Christ's 12 apostles.

That Francis would include women in this re-enactment is remarkable given current liturgical rules that restrict the ritual to men.

Canon lawyer Edward Peters, who is an adviser to the Holy See's top court, noted in a blog that the Congregation for Divine Worship in 1988 said in a letter to bishops that "The washing of the feet of chosen men ... represents the service and charity of Christ who came 'not to be served, but to serve.'"

Peters noted that bishops over the years have successfully petitioned Rome for an exemption to allow women to participate, but that the law on the issue is clear.

"By disregarding his own law in this matter, Francis violates, of course, no divine directive," Peters wrote Thursday. "What he does do, I fear, is set a questionable example."

Others welcomed the example he set.

"The pope's washing the feet of women is hugely significant because including women in this part of the Holy Thursday Mass has been frowned on ? and even banned ? in some dioceses," said the Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit priest and author of "The Jesuit Guide."

"It shows the all-embracing love of Christ, who ministered to all he met: man or woman, slave or free, Jew or Gentile," he said.

After the Mass, Francis greeted each of the inmates and gave each one an Easter egg.

"Don't lose hope," he said. "Understand? With hope you can always go on."

One of the inmates then asked him why he had come to visit them. Francis said it was to "help me to be humble, as a bishop should be." He said he wanted to come "from my heart. Things from the heart don't have an explanation," he said.

Italian Justice Minister Paola Severino, who has made easing Italy's woefully overcrowded prisons a priority, attended the Mass.

Sonic Vitamins: The most powerful Brain Entrainment ... - Get self-help

Having tried out so many Brain Entrainment products over the years, when I run into something that works well, I like to let others know about it. The reason is that Brain Entrainment is quick and instant, unlike most of the self-help programming, which takes weeks and months to work (or in many cases ? not work!) It?s important that when you read through a self-help review, I feel, that the person who is reviewing the programme, has actually used the programme.

Brainwave Entrainment is a quick win for me, as I get to write about it within hours and days and not months. I think you?ll like Brain Entrainment for very similar reasons. You know it works ? and the proof is in the eating.

I?ve?loaded this one up onto my iPod permanently, and cannot recommend it more.

There are two main providers?I?ve?settled on. The one is EOC Institute, which to my mind (if you excuse the pun) makes the most sophisticated recordings available. Their programme called ?Equisync? is probably the most sophisticated Brainwave Entrainment?mp3?available. Their range is limited, and so I started looking around, testing a few other providers. Sonic Vitamins is really exciting. Their range is as broad as it is deep.

Start out with Siesta Shot.?I?ve?loaded this one up onto my iPod permanently, and cannot recommend it more. I use it on weekends, in between getting more chores done and relaxing or going out.

The programme starts off with what sounds like helicopter blades whirring around you. There?s a lot going on in the background at this stage, working to bring you down. The helicopter effect gets slower and slower, 20mins in as you?ll just lolling off to sleep, they sound like brushes, or feet wiping on an outdoor?fiber?mat. That?s the last thing you notice, until 30mins later when the brushing speeds returning to the helicopter effect (which by now you realise are the same sound just at different speeds).

This programme has three significant benefits over other Brain?Entrainment?programming?I?ve?tested:

  • It?s cheaper
  • You are guaranteed to fall asleep for a little while
  • A short while after awakening, you are filled with new energy and will be surging awake for hours to come ? you will feel brighter and livelier. (Sounds like a clich?, but I?m quite serious.)

Sonic Vitamins? Siesta Shot was the fifth programme?I?ve?tested so far, and it is by the best example of how effective and powerful Brainwave?Entrainment?can be.? While I appreciate other programmes like cool Instant Zen track and the very curious Happiness Lift, it was my Siesta Shot that really sold me on the entire range ? and led me to review Sonic Vitamins so highly.

Poultry probiotic cuts its coat to beat bad bacteria

Mar. 27, 2013 ? A strain of probiotic bacteria that can fight harmful bacterial infections in poultry has the ability to change its coat, according to new findings from the Institute of Food Research.

The probiotic is currently being taken forward through farm-scale trials to evaluate how well it combats Clostridium perfringens -- a cause of necrotic enteritis in poultry and the second most common cause of food poisoning in the UK

The researchers at IFR, which is strategically funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, had previously found that the probiotic Lactobacillus johnsonsii, when given to young chicks, prevents the colonisation of C. perfringens. Now, in research published in the journal PLOS ONE, they have found that the probiotic bacteria have the ability to alter their coat. They speculate that this could be one way in which the probiotic outcompete C. perfringens.

The researchers noticed when examining the bacteria that a small number of them appear smooth. They identified genes responsible for making a special coat, or slime capsule, which the bacteria surround themselves in. This protects the bacteria from stomach acids and bile salts, and helps them come together to form biofilms. It may also protect against drying out when outside the host. The natural appearance of smooth mutants could be a ploy used by the bacteria to introduce variation into its populations, making them able to take advantage of different environments.

By turning off one or more of the coat genes, they could see what effect this had on its ability to stick to gut tissues. "The next step is to understand the regulation of the genes involved in making the coat" said Dr Arjan Narbad, who led the studies. "We want to find out whether changing the coat affects the probiotic's fitness to colonise and inhabit the gut."

This in turn could prevent C. perfringens from colonising the gut. This competitive exclusion could be one reason why the probiotic strain prevents the growth of other harmful bacteria.

Understanding the role of the slime capsule coat will inform the commercial development of this strain as a preventative treatment for C. perfringens infection in poultry, especially in regard to how the probiotic is stored and produced. Through the technology transfer company Plant Bioscience Ltd, the strain has been patented and is now in large-scale farm trials to assess its efficacy. As these bacteria have previously been used in the food chain and are considered safe for human consumption, this probiotic strain could become new way of controlling C. perfringens.

As there is a growing pressure to reduce the use of antibiotics in farming, new products are needed to maintain animal welfare standards, reduce the huge costs of necrosis in poultry and help keep our food safe.

Copas News: MOTIVATION, THE HEART OF SELF IMPROVEMENT

Pain may sometimes be the reason why people change. Getting flunked grades make us realize that we need to study. Debts remind us of our inability to look for a source of income. Being humiliated gives us the push to speak up and fight for ourselves to save our face from the next embarrassments. It may be a bitter experience, a friends tragic story, a great movie, or an inspiring book that will help us get up and get just the right amount of motivation we need in order to improve ourselves.

With the countless negativities the world brings about, how do we keep motivated? Try on the tips I prepared from A to Z

A - Achieve your dreams. Avoid negative people, things and places. Eleanor Roosevelt once said, the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.

B - Believe in your self, and in what you can do.

C Consider things on every angle and aspect. Motivation comes from determination. To be able to understand life, you should feel the sun from both sides.

D Dont give up and dont give in. Thomas Edison failed once, twice, more than thrice before he came up with his invention and perfected the incandescent light bulb. Make motivation as your steering wheel.

E Enjoy. Work as if you dont need money. Dance as if nobodys watching. Love as if you never cried. Learn as if youll live forever. Motivation takes place when people are happy.

F Family and Friends are lifes greatest F treasures. Dont loose sight of them.

G Give more than what is enough. Where does motivation and self improvement take place at work? At home? At school? When you exert extra effort in doing things.

H Hang on to your dreams. They may dangle in there for a moment, but these little stars will be your driving force.

I Ignore those who try to destroy you. Dont let other people to get the best of you. Stay out of toxic people the kind of friends who hates to hear about your success.

J Just be yourself. The key to success is to be yourself. And the key to failure is to try to please everyone.

K keep trying no matter how hard life may seem. When a person is motivated, eventually he sees a harsh life finally clearing out, paving the way to self improvement.
L Learn to love your self. Now isnt that easy?

M Make things happen. Motivation is when your dreams are put into work clothes.

N Never lie, cheat or steal. Always play a fair game.

O Open your eyes. People should learn the horse attitude and horse sense. They see things in 2 ways how they want things to be, and how they should be.

P Practice makes perfect. Practice is about motivation. It lets us learn repertoire and ways on how can we recover from our mistakes.

Q Quitters never win. And winners never quit. So, choose your fate are you going to be a quitter? Or a winner?

R Ready yourself. Motivation is also about preparation. We must hear the little voice within us telling us to get started before others will get on their feet and try to push us around. Remember, it wasnt raining when Noah build the ark.

S Stop procrastinating.

T Take control of your life. Discipline or self control jives synonymously with motivation. Both are key factors in self improvement.

U Understand others. If you know very well how to talk, you should also learn how to listen. Yearn to understand first, and to be understood the second.

V Visualize it. Motivation without vision is like a boat on a dry land.

W Want it more than anything. Dreaming means believing. And to believe is something that is rooted out from the roots of motivation and self improvement.

X X Factor is what will make you different from the others. When you are motivated, you tend to put on extras on your life like extra time for family, extra help at work, extra care for friends, and so on.

Y You are unique. No one in this world looks, acts, or talks like you. Value your life and existence, because youre just going to spend it once.

Z Zero in on your dreams and go for it!!!

Breakthrough Breast Cancer Treatment Pioneered In OKC - KOTV.com

OKLAHOMA CITY -

There's a big breakthrough in the battle against breast cancer.

Doctors say new technology is making treatment safer, and the procedure is being pioneered right here in the metro.

ProCure in Oklahoma City is one of only 10 proton therapy centers across the country. With this type of treatment, patients are experiencing fewer side effects, and it's been successful in treating several forms of cancer.

Now, for the first time, doctors are using the technology to fight breast cancer.

"This machine rotates around the patient 360 degrees, and it has the resource of emitting protons from any angle you want," ProCure Oncologist Dr. Marcio Fagundes says, "we're targeting the area very precisely."

It targets specific cancer tumors, and it's safer, doctors say, than conventional radiation.

"One of the obstacles we've run into is when you're treating the area of the chest, very close to the heart, we don't want to expose the coronary arteries of the heart, and conventional radiation tends to do that," Dr. Fagundes said.

At ProCure, proton therapy has been used to treat prostate cancer and other tumors, but never breast cancer - until now.

In fact, it's one of only 3 treatment centers offering the breakthrough technology specifically for breast cancer patients. Doctors say proton therapy protects the heart and lungs.

"We're increasing the chances of curing a patient without causing a problem to the heart, so ultimately we're improving the treatment results," Dr. Fagundes said.

ProCure says each case is different, and patients need to talk to their specialists to decide on the best treatment for them.

The center is now accepting patients with stage one to stage three breast cancer.

(AP) ? It wasn't too long ago that America had a love affair with soda. Now, an old flame has the country's heart.

As New York City grapples with the legality of a ban on the sale of large cups of soda and other sugary drinks at some businesses, one thing is clear: soda's run as the nation's beverage of choice has fizzled.

In its place? A favorite for much of history: Plain old H2O.

For more than two decades, soda was the No. 1 drink in the U.S. with per capita consumption peaking in 1998 at 54 gallons a year, according industry tracker Beverage Digest. Americans drank just 42 gallons a year of water at the time.

But over the years, as soda increasingly came under fire for fueling the nation's rising obesity rates, water quietly rose to knock it off the top spot.

Americans now drink an average of 44 gallons of soda a year, a 17 percent drop from the peak in 1998. Over the same time, the average amount of water people drink has increased 38 percent to about 58 gallons a year. Bottled water has led that growth, with consumption nearly doubling to 21 gallons a year.

Stephen Ngo, a civil defense attorney, quit drinking soda a year ago when he started running triathlons, and wanted a healthier way to quench his thirst.

Ngo, 34, has a Brita filter for tap water and also keeps his pantry stocked with cases of bottled water.

"It might just be the placebo effect or marketing, but it tastes crisper," said Ngo, who lives in Miami.

The trend reflects Americans' ever-changing tastes; it wasn't too far back in history that tap water was the top drink.

But in the 1980s, carbonated soft drinks overtook tap as the most popular drink, with Coca-Cola and PepsiCo putting their marketing muscle behind their colas with celebrity endorsements from the likes of pop star Michael Jackson and comedian Bill Cosby.

Americans kept drinking more of the carbonated, sugary drink for about a decade. Then, soda's magic started to fade: Everyone from doctors to health advocates to government officials were blaming soft drinks for making people fat. Consumption started declining after hitting a high in the late 1990s.

At the same time, people started turning to bottled water as an alternative. Its popularity was helped by the emergence of single-serve bottles that were easy to carry around.

Until then, bottled water had mainly been sold in "big jugs and coolers" for people who didn't trust their water supply, said John Sicher, publisher of Beverage Digest.

The new soft drink-like packaging helped fast-track bottled water's growth past milk and beer. In fact, the amount of bottled water Americans drink has risen nearly every year for more than two decades, while the estimates of how much tap water people drink has fluctuated up and down during that time. When taken together, water finally overtook soda in 2008, according to Beverage Digest. (It's difficult to track how much tap water people drink and how much is used for other things like washing dishes, so experts estimate consumption.)

Analysts expect water to hold onto to its top spot for years to come. But whether people will drink from the tap or a bottle is uncertain.

Based on current trajectories, Michael Bellas, the CEO of the industry tracker Beverage Marketing Corp., predicts that bottled water alone could overtake soda within the next decade. That's not counting enhanced and flavored waters, which are growing quickly but remain a small part of the bottled water industry.

Currently, people drink 21 gallons of bottled water a year. That compares with 37 gallons of other water, which includes tap, sparkling, flavored and enhanced waters such as Coca-Cola's vitaminwater.

But there are numerous factors that could tilt the scales in favor of tap water.

Because of concerns that plastic bottles create too much waste, experts say bottled water could be hit by a public backlash similar to the one that has whipsawed the soda industry with pushes for bans and taxes.

New York City was preparing for a ban on cups of sugary drinks that are larger than 16 ounces starting on Tuesday. But on Monday ? a day before the ban was to begin ? a judge invalidated the regulation. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who originally proposed the ban, vowed to appeal the judge's ruling.

Bottled water already is starting to face similar opposition. The town of Concord, Mass. earlier this year banned the sale of water bottles that are less than a liter. And the University of Vermont became the first public university to ban the sale of bottled water last year.

Meanwhile, other cities are waging campaigns to promote tap water. New York City, which touts the high quality of its tap water, offers portable fountains at events around the city.

"Good old marketing has convinced people that they should spend a lot of money on bottled water," says Salome Freud, chief of New York City's distribution water quality operations.

Although companies such as Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc. would rather have people buy bottled waters, they're even more invested in getting people to drink more soda again.

That's because soda and other drinks that the companies make, such as sports drinks and juices, are more profitable than bottled water. With bottled water, people tend to buy whatever is cheapest. That's a habit that forces companies to keep prices relatively low, which eats into profits.

It's why companies are investing so heavily in developing nations such as China and India, where the appetite for soda continues to grow.

In the U.S., annual soda sales are more than five times as big as bottled water at $75.7 billion a year, according to Beverage Digest. In terms of volume, soda is only twice as big as bottled water.

At Coca-Cola, the No. 1 soda maker, three-quarters of its volume in gallons comes from soft drinks, compared with 8 percent for its bottled waters including Dasani. PepsiCo, the No. 2 soda maker, gets 64 percent of its volume from soft drinks and only 7 percent from its Aquafina bottled water.

It's why Coca-Cola, which holds 13 percent of the bottled water market compared with PepsiCo's 10 percent, doesn't seem to think bottled water will ever overtake soda. In an emailed statement, the Atlanta-based company noted that soft drinks remain a far larger category than bottled water and that it sees "upside" for sodas over the next several years.

However, the company added that it saw "great potential" for bottled water. Like its competitors, Coca-Cola said it's focusing on growing its portfolio of bottled waters profitably by offering brands such as Smartwater and its flavored vitaminwater, which fetch higher prices.

In the meantime, the chairman and former CEO of Nestle Waters North America, Kim Jeffery, is waiting for bottled water's moment in the spotlight. Nestle, the Swiss company that makes Poland Spring, Nestle Pure Life, Deer Park and other brands, has nearly half of the share of the bottled water market.

At a beverage industry conference late last year, Jeffery noted that bottled water is "the elephant in the room."

And given the growing warnings over drinking too many calories ? including from juice, milk and other sugary drinks ? Jeffery said he's confident that water will continue to grow in popularity.

"For thousands of years, water was beverage of choice for human beings," he said. "Now we're reverting back to that."

Life of a Rep - Global Lighting Blog

Frederick Wenzlaff (at the speed of light!)

?

As Frederick Wenzlaff of LIGHT in Manhattan Beach, California, heads into his tenth year as a local sales rep and rests easily as one of Global Lighting?s elite in our national network, he shares his thoughts on stagecraft; the Los Angeles design community; telling it like it is; and yes, lightening things up in a mirthless economy.

?

GL: What path took you to the world of lighting?

?

FW: Back in high school I was drawn to stagecraft. After many nights of hanging and focusing the stage lighting system, I knew I was heading for theatrical lighting and technical direction in college. I?d inherited a split personality of engineering and art appreciation from my family. They were dentists and engineers who were all artists behind the scenes. That mix served me well when I worked on live performance and permanent installation-type projects. And it continues to support my work in the lighting world.

?

GL: What part of your work has given you the most satisfaction and made the best use of your strengths?

?

FW: I find it really gratifying to help designers work through project challenges to achieve their vision. Then when I experience the completed project?often times a large architectural installation or an amazing public installation?that?s the fun of it.

?

?

Fred, left, at LZF Lamps with Donna Cregan, center, and Lori Noble-Forshee, right. He?s front and center in the video of the factory tour below!

?

GL: Speaking of fun, rumor has it you have a wicked sense of humor.? How do you bring that to your work?

?

FW: Ha! Who me? Maybe you have me confused with someone else! Okay full disclosure, I have such terrible sarcasm that I have to be careful not to confuse people. But the upside is that if I can develop a comfortable rapport with somebody, it?s a way of establishing that we can still have a laugh at our serious and stressful environments.

?

GL: What else do you feel you bring to the party that?s unique to your M.O.?

?

FW: I feel it?s my duty to be honest about what I know and what I don?t know. Digging up the most accurate information can sometimes annoy people, especially when they?re busy and stressed. But once you let yourself get lazy with information it?s a quick slide into neglect.

?

GL: Honesty, you say? How?s that working for you?

?

FW: When you believe in offering up honest and useful information, you have to let go of the need to always be right and just let yourself be candid. The good news is that clients have responded by trusting me with their projects.

?

?

?

?

GL: That?s so true about gaining a client?s trust. So why do you suppose people often resist telling it like it is?

?

FW: I think in this ?ber-information age, we often feel there?s more behind the scenes expected of us?an aspect of intelligence or knowledge. I look at a single link on a Wikipedia page and I realize there?s so much more I can know about an entire category. But we?ve grown up in the shadows of brilliant people who had no Wiki and who relied on their experience, due diligence, instinct and insights. We can?t lose sight that that?s as valuable a component as facts and figures.

?

GL: You live near L.A. How do you feel that environment informs the industry or your approach to it?

FW: The L.A. environment is so spread out and varied that the architecture and design community moves in selective circles rather than orbiting around a common area or goal. There?s no central walk-up design district, no soapbox where designers can talk and relate to each other. As reps, we have to diffuse the information to everyone by email marketing, in-house presentations, and lots of driving between firms. It?s a lot of work but I feel we add something to the whole community by channeling and dispersing information throughout.

?

Fred at the B.lux factory with that look on his face: ?Are you thinking what I?m thinking??

?

GL: What other areas inform your approach to the business; architecture, interior design, reading, economic trends, fashion trends or film trends perhaps?

?

FW: I believe in getting to know my clients. I listen and let them show me what they need. Then I relate my personal experience and knowledge so they understand that I?m part of the community too, and not there just for sales. Having a theater background isn?t part of the job description but it?s something I can bring to the party. Everyone has something to offer outside the job description.

?

I also enjoy the social aspect of my business and building relationships with everyone involved. I might be engaged with architects or designers on a project, or sharing new info and laughs with the great team at LIGHT. A recent field trip to Spain with Global Lighting to see B.lux and LZF helped refresh my spirit in lighting sales. I was introduced to my counterparts from across America and Nova Scotia. It was great to hang out with such a smart, funny, and knowledgeable group. I thought, ?I really like and admire these people!? When you can say that about your colleagues, it?s pretty special.

?

The Fred Wenzlaff Tree: it blooms day-in and day-out!

?

GL: What do you see as the most significant change in the industry over the years?

?

FW: From my experience, cell phones, CFLs, design plagiarisms, e-mail, energy codes, LEDs and e-commerce. What did I miss?

?

GL: How do you see the play between aesthetics and functionality these days?? Are they affected by the present economy?

?

FW: Lighting exhibits properties of both a wave and a particle. Fashion trends and recedes like a wave while technology continues to move forward like a particle. The speed of light is considered one of the fundamental constants of nature. The nature of the economy affects everything and is fundamentally considered to be a constant pain in the ass.

?

?

GL: Where do you feel the industry is heading; what?s the next big thing?

?

FW: I think the availability of personal lighting control systems for both commercial and residential applications are going to take a big leap forward. It will be driven by different forces, mainly tougher energy codes and smart phone technology. How do you use technology to its fullest when technology hasn?t been fully sussed out yet? It has the potential to be not only fun but helpful.

?

GL: You put 150% of yourself into your work. What has it given back to you in terms of your professional growth?

?

FW: This is a trick question, right?

?

As Afghan trip goes badly off script, Hagel opts for caution

By Phil Stewart

KABUL (Reuters) - It was a harrowing international debut for Chuck Hagel, whose first trip to Afghanistan as defense secretary went dramatically off-script and challenged the American narrative about the 11-year-old war.

His first full day in Afghanistan began with the sound of suicide bomb attack about a mile away from his morning meetings at a NATO facility. But the real damage came the next day when Washington's mercurial ally in the war, Afghan President Hamid Karzai, accused the United States of colluding with the Taliban hours before the two met.

Put in an awkward position, Hagel appeared cautious and at pains to avoid sharply criticizing the Afghan leader in public, even as he firmly disputed Karzai's assertions.

In private, Hagel requested and had a private one-on-one meeting with Karzai where he was "firm and direct" with the Afghan president, a U.S. official said. Hagel declined to provide reporters with details of the private exchange.

Asked about Karzai's comments, White House national security advisor Tom Donilon cited "difficult questions" surrounding the transfer of security control from the NATO-led force to Afghan soldiers.

"We've had challenges before. We've continued to work with President Karzai. But we're I think on track to meet the goals we've set for ourselves," Donilon said in response to a question after a speech in New York.

Having weathered a brutal confirmation battle last month, Hagel, a former two-term Republican senator, at one point even appeared to publicly commiserate with Karzai.

"I was once a politician," Hagel, 66, told reporters traveling with him. "So I can understand the kind of pressures - especially leaders of countries - are always under."

Hagel's more measured approach was on display as well on Saturday, when he was asked about his initial reaction to the sound of the blast from a suicide bombing at Afghanistan's nearby defense ministry, which killed nine civilians.

"We're in a war zone. I've been in war ... So (we) shouldn't be surprised when a bomb goes off or there's an explosion," he said.

There are good reasons for Hagel to be cautious. A perceived gaffe or damaging misstep after such an acrimonious confirmation process could have given Republican critics more ammunition after they questioned his war judgment. It could also complicate his efforts to wind down the war in Afghanistan.

But the Taliban bombings and Karzai's accusations were a jarring contrast to Hagel's optimistic, if tempered, comments about the war effort, which he said was "on the right path."

"You look over the past 11 years, it's pretty dramatic, what's happened in this country," Hagel told reporters on Sunday. "Yes, a ways to go. Yes, challenges. Yes, issues. Yes, differences. But I don't think any of these are challenges that we can't work our way through."

The trip failed to answer the big questions about Hagel's thinking so far about America's evolving exit strategy from the unpopular conflict, including an upcoming decision on the size of the residual force the United States will leave behind in Afghanistan once the NATO mission ends in 2014.

SECURITY AGREEMENT

A senior defense official said Hagel was looking forward to working with other senior policy makers in Washington to "deepen our engagement with Afghan leaders, some of whom clearly have issues they want resolved." Hagel's priority, the official said, would be striking a security agreement with Afghanistan.

But it was concerns over security that forced Hagel and Karzai to cancel a joint news conference, U.S. officials said. The venue for Hagel's meeting with the Afghan defense and interior ministers was also changed.

America's first Vietnam war veteran to become defense secretary, Hagel appeared most at ease when talking to troops during a stop at a base in the eastern city of Jalalabad.

He cracked jokes and pinned Purple Heart medals on two soldiers wounded in battle. Hagel has two of the medals himself and still carries bits of shrapnel in his chest from that conflict.

Hagel, a former infantryman, joked to an Army staff sergeant that there was a time when "I was scared to death of a staff sergeant." The soldier responded: "You should be, sir." Hagel laughed.

During his trip back to the United States on Monday, Hagel stopped off in Ramstein, Germany, where he had planned to visit with wounded troops and see an Air Force general. There were no U.S. service members being treated for combat injuries at the time.

But as he landed news broke about an insider attack in Afghanistan when a person in an Afghan military uniform turned his weapon on troops at a joint base in the restive east of the country, killing two U.S. soldiers, and five Afghan army and police personnel.

Throughout his trip, Hagel assured troops he would do whatever he could to help them, even in the face of across-the-board budget cuts hitting the Pentagon and other U.S. agencies.

"I want you to also know that I will always do my best for you, for your families, our country," Hagel told the soldiers in Jalalabad. "I will always put our men and women in uniform first and do everything I can to ensure your safety or success and everything that you're entitled to."

This could be complicated, as I don't know what he's not liking... If he's legitimately worried you're going to get hurt, then it's totally different from if he's trying to take away something you like to do until you make what HE thinks is a better school record. As a somewhat successful adult in life and in business, I can say that my bodybuilding sport is part of my self esteem, and without it I would NOT do as well as I am doing. Therefore, if your mind works like mine does, your Dad should understand that not liking you do your sport, is in fact not wanting you to do better in studies after all Wink . But on the other hand, if he is just concerned that you will get hurt, you might work to convince him that you are reading and studying about fitness and injury prevention, and remind him that people get hurt sometimes, no matter what they're doing, and that you are being careful so that the benefits of a good physical conditioning will outweigh the risk of injuries and bad self esteem from feeling out-of-shape...

(AP) ? You're expecting hundreds of thousands of guests. You don't know where they're coming from, or when they'll arrive. You don't even know the date of the celebration.

And heaven only knows the name of the man being feted.

Planning for the moment when the next pope is proclaimed to the world, and for the installation ceremony a few days later, is a big-time guessing game. And that adds up to an ungodly logistical headache for the city of Rome.

When white smoke pours out of the chimney atop the Sistine Chapel, throngs of Romans will drop what they're doing and race to St. Peter's Square to cheer the new pope when he steps out onto the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica. If the next pontiff hails from somewhere in Italy, thousands can be expected to pack trains to the capital.

Then there are all the foreigners flying into town to capture the historic moment ? an influx that may become overwhelming if cardinals break with tradition and elect the first pope from Latin America, home to 40 percent of the world's Catholics.

A tented field hospital will go up in a square near the Vatican by the eve of the start of the conclave on Tuesday, ensuring that emergency medical treatment will be just around the corner if any pilgrim feels ill or stumbles in the rush to glimpse the new pope.

While there are no other special plans for the conclave itself, Rome authorities have a detailed game-plan for the papal installation that takes place a few days after the pope is elected. The audience for that momentous event in St. Peter's Square will include presidents, prime ministers, religious leaders and tens of thousands of pilgrims, along with the throngs of accidental tourists who happen to be in town.

Police helicopters will whirl overhead. Thousands of extra police will be summoned to duty to keep streets safe and unclogged. Officers on motorized rubber dinghies will glide down the Tiber, ready to dive into the river's murky waters to pick out anything suspicious. Bomb-sniffing dogs will poke their noses down manholes and trash bins in security sweeps along the routes that both VIPs and faithful will cover en route to the square.

As soon as the installation date is known, some 500 Civil Protection volunteers, many of them ready to hop on Segways, will receive phone calls to spring into action. They know the drill for the big day: They'll report to Rome's main train station and the subway stop closest to the Vatican before dawn, helping like good shepherds to channel the flock along designated streets, closed to traffic, that lead to St. Peter's Square.

"Not even the Vatican knows how big the crowd will be," said Mario Vallorosi, who heads the Rome office of the government's Civil Protection service. "It will be affected by who (the pope) is. If he's a Latin American, he will draw huge crowds." Conservative crowd estimates, he told The Associated Press, run between 200,000 and 300,000.

Since Benedict XVI gave two-week's notice last month for his resignation ? the first in 600 years ? there have been a few "trial runs" of crowd control and security in St. Peter's Square. His final public audience drew so many people (some 150,000 people) there wasn't enough space for all in the vast cobblestone square. Surrounding streets quickly filled up with the overflow, with many faithful watching the pope's final public Vatican appearance on maxi-screens set up for them.

The Vatican's own security force, known as the gendarmerie, is in charge of the crowd inside the square and Italian police handle crowd control just outside the Vatican's boundaries. Security officers from both forces included plainclothes agents dressed up as pilgrims and tourists, listening to the chatter in the square and watching for any unusual movements.

Nearly everything went smoothly for Benedict's last public appearances, although some faithful panicked during the retired pope's penultimate Sunday blessing from his studio window, when thousands of last-minute arrivals tried to squeeze through three narrow openings through a metal fence ringing the edge of the square.

Rome enjoyed at least a few days scramble time for those last papal events. Now, uncertainty surrounding the conclave is adding huge pressure.

"The biggest concern is lack of information," said Giammario Nardi, the man Rome's mayor has put in charge of hosting special events.

Nardi insisted the city is not privy to any hints from the Vatican about when the papal installation will take place. "We're operating on predictions," he said, "on what the newspapers tell us."

Nardi spoke with The Associated Press several hours before the Vatican announced on Friday that the cardinals will start voting for Benedict's successor on Tuesday, a process that could wrap up in a day or two, or might need more time.

With a shudder, Nardi recalled how ambulances were blocked by the narrow streets of the Borgo, the neighborhood near the Vatican, when faithful couldn't squeeze into the square and clogged the streets after John Paul II's death in 2005. In those days crowds turned out day and night to pray at the Vatican and pass by his body as it lay on display in St. Peter's Basilica.

The decision to set up a field hospital this time is fruit of that bad memory, he said.

The most mentioned date for the new pope's installation Mass in St. Peter's Square is Sunday, March 17, exactly a week before Palm Sunday begins Holy Week. Nardi acknowledged that date as the city's operating "hypothesis."

He sighed as he pondered the challenges.

"The election of an Italian pope or a foreign pope will mean, as pilgrims go, different numbers and different types," he said, adding: "It's not like we have a lot of time between when the white smoke puffs out and the installation."

Complicating a March 17 papal installation: It's the same date the capital is hosting the Rome Marathon.

Some 100,000 runners are expected for the race, which traditionally loops near St. Peter's Square in mid-morning. That's practically the same time huge crowds could be surging toward the Vatican for a first papal Mass.

Nardi said that the Italian government wanted to cancel the marathon, citing worries about public safety. But Rome's officials were adamant about holding it, and a compromise was clinched.

If the installation falls on marathon day, the race will go ahead but re-routed away from the Vatican. The marathon's start will also be put off until early afternoon, when presumably the new pope, pilgrims and Romans will be eating lunch. A main Rome boulevard usually on the marathon route will be fenced off so limousines can whisk VIPs straight to St. Peter's Square without dodging pedestrians ? or marathon runners.

If the marathon weren't enough, March 17 is also St. Patrick's Day, with thousands of Irish rugby fans expected in Rome because Ireland plays Italy the day before in the Six Nations tournament.

Benedict's final public audience cost Rome some euros 500,000 ($675,000) alone, and public events surrounding the new pope's installation ceremony could cost 10 times that amount.

For example, the city will rent several maxi-screens, at euros 20,000 ($27,000) apiece, to place in streets near the Vatican for faithful who can't fit into the square.

Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno has taken to passing a collection plate to the central government, but so far Italy's austerity-minded caretaker premier, Mario Monti, hasn't dropped anything in.

Whether Rome could recoup some of the costs connected with the papal ceremonies from tourism, including a modest surcharge on hotel rooms, depends heavily on where the pilgrims come from, Nardi said. The number of tourists in the city rose by some 10 to 20 percent for Benedict's final audience, with many apparently from southern Germany, judging by the many pilgrims waving the flag of Benedict's native Bavaria.

When Benedict was installed in 2005, an estimated 100,000 Germans turned out for the ceremony, which drew some 350,000 overall.

Just how many people the new pope will attract to the city is an open question, depending a lot on what Nardi called "charisma."

Japan marks two years since tsunami

TOKYO (AP) ? Amid growing dissatisfaction with the slow pace of recovery, Japan marked the second anniversary Monday of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that left nearly 19,000 people dead or missing and has displaced more than 300,000.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that the government intends to make "visible" reconstruction progress and accelerate resettlement of those left homeless by streamlining legal and administrative procedures many blame for the delays.

"I pray that the peaceful lives of those affected can resume as soon as possible," Emperor Akihito said at a somber memorial service at Tokyo's National Theater.

At observances in Tokyo and in still barren towns along the northeastern coast, those gathered bowed their heads in a moment of silence marking the moment, at 2:46 p.m. on March 11, 2011, when the magnitude 9.0 earthquake ? the strongest recorded in Japan's history ? struck off the coast.

Japan has struggled to rebuild communities and to clean up radiation from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, whose reactors melted down after its cooling systems were disabled by the tsunami. The government has yet to devise a new energy strategy ? a central issue for its struggling economy with all but two of the country's nuclear reactors offline.

About half of those displaced are evacuees from areas near the nuclear plant. Hundreds of them filed a lawsuit Monday demanding compensation from the government and the now-defunct plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co., or TEPCO, for their suffering and losses.

"Two years after the disasters, neither the government nor TEPCO has clearly acknowledged their responsibility, nor have they provided sufficient support to cover the damages," said Izutaro Managi, a lawyer representing the plaintiffs.

Throughout the disaster zone, the tens of thousands of survivors living in temporary housing are impatient to get resettled, a process that could take up to a decade, officials say.

"What I really want is to once again have a 'my home,' " said Migaku Suzuki, a 69-year-old farm worker in Rikuzentakata, who lost the house he had just finished building in the disaster. Suzuki also lost a son in the tsunami, which obliterated much of the city.

Further south, in Fukushima prefecture, some 160,000 evacuees are uncertain if they will ever be able to return to homes around the nuclear power plant, where the meltdowns in three reactors spewed radiation into the surrounding soil and water.

The lawsuit filed by a group of 800 people in Fukushima demands an apology payment of 50,000 yen ($625) a month for each victim until all radiation from the accident is wiped out, a process that could take decades. Another 900 plan similar cases in Tokyo and elsewhere. Managi said he and fellow lawyers hope to get 10,000 to join the lawsuits.

Evacuees are anxious to return home but worried about the potential, still uncertain risks from exposure to the radiation from the disaster, the worst since Chernobyl in 1986.

While there have been no clear cases of cancer linked to radiation from the plant, the upheaval in people's lives, uncertainty about the future and long-term health concerns, especially for children, have taken an immense psychological toll on thousands of residents.

"I don't trust the government on anything related to health anymore," said Masaaki Watanabe, 42, who fled the nearby town of Minami-Soma and doesn't plan to return.

Yuko Endo, village chief in Kawauchi, said many residents might not go back if they are kept waiting too long. Restrictions on access are gradually being lifted as workers remove debris and wipe down roofs by hand.

"If I were told to wait for two more years, I might explode," said Endo, who is determined to revive his town of mostly empty houses and overgrown fields.

A change of government late last year has raised hopes that authorities might move more quickly with the cleanup and reconstruction.

Since taking office in late December, Abe has made a point of frequently visiting the disaster zone, promising faster action and plans to raise the long-term reconstruction budget to 25 trillion yen ($262 billion) from 19 trillion yen (about $200 billion).

"We cannot turn away from the harsh reality of the affected areas. The Great East Japan Earthquake still is an ongoing event," Abe said at the memorial gathering in Tokyo. "Many of those hit by the disaster are still facing uncertainty over their futures."

The struggles to rebuild and to cope with the nuclear disaster are only the most immediate issues Japan is grappling with as it searches for new drivers for growth as its export manufacturing lags, its society ages and its huge national debt grows ever bigger.

Those broader issues are also hindering the reconstruction. Towns want to rebuild, but they face the stark reality of dwindling, aging populations that are shrinking further as residents give up on ever finding new jobs. The tsunami and nuclear crisis devastated local fish processing and tourism industries, accelerating a decline that began decades before.

Meanwhile, the costly decommissioning the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant could take 40 years as its operator works on finding and removing melted nuclear fuel from inside, disposing the spent fuel rods and treating the many tons of contaminated wastewater used to cool the reactors.

Following the Fukushima disaster, Japan's 50 still viable nuclear reactors were shut down for regular inspections and then for special tests to check their disaster preparedness. Two were restarted last summer to help meet power shortages, but most Japanese remain opposed to restarting more plants.

The government, though, looks likely to back away from a decision to phase out nuclear power by the 2030s. Abe says it may take a decade to decide on what Japan's energy mix should be.

PST: Chelsea rally, force FA Cup replay vs. United

Who would have possibly imagined seeing an Manchester United side so enfeebled? Looking suddenly so fragile and emotional spent? At home, no less!

Chelsea fully earned an FA Cup replay in the coming days at Stamford Bridge, utterly standing on Manchester United in the second half of Sunday?s highly entertaining contest at Old Trafford. In fact, while Chelsea will feel OK in the big picture about the 2-2 draw that brings the clash of EPL giants back to London, the cast from Stamford Bridge will rightly feel they should have finished this one.

The Red Devils could still rally, shuffle past Chelsea in FA Cup redemption and go on to a 2013 double, writing yet another chapter in the storied Alex Ferguson opus. Yes, it could happen.

Still, there is no escaping the dark-and-storminess that has been Manchester United?s week. First came the Champions League crash-out to Real Madrid. Jose Mourinho may have proclaimed that the best team lost. Fair enough. But lose the Red Devils did.

But to have a 2-0 lead at home into the second half ? and now face a replay against Chelsea just days later? That is the stuff of nightmares, Manchester United?s version of pychos and chainsaws.

They looked so shaky, particularly in the back, as John Obi Mikel made the difference in midfield, and as Juan Mata and Eden Hazard rode in on waves of late attacking menace.

If not for David de Gea, the goalkeeper who has surely answered questions about his ability and worthiness to guard the fabled Old Trafford goal, this would be worse yet. (As Juan Mata cut inside with the silkiest, most skill touch late in this one, winding up to shoot from point-blank range, who among us watching weren?t saying ?goal? as if it were sure as water running downhill?)

And this is without mentioning the sideshow, the ridiculously premature obituary-writing of Wayne Rooney?s career.

Presumably, Ferguson?s men can hang onto their league lead. They?ll bounce back enough for that. Past that, however ? it?s fair to wonder about just how much this gut-punch of a week will take out of Ferguson?s men.
