David Pogue Crushes Apple Maps: 'It May Be The ... - Business Insider

David Pogue, the New York Times' personal technology columnist, just crushed Apple's Maps.

He writes, "Maps is an appalling first release. It may be the most embarrassing, least usable piece of software Apple has ever unleashed."

He says that while the maps are beautifully designed, they're so buggy, inaccurate, and lacking in basic features that it's, "as though you just got a $1,500 professional coffee maker and then poured moldy beans into it."

Ouch.

Front Room Re-do - Jenallyson - The Project Girl

September 26th, 2012

I recently updated that we were working on our ?room divider? in the living room. I needed Mr. Project to finish it really fast because I was hosting a bunco party. So he kicked it into high gear and start to finish he had the room divider and all the wall trim up and painted in less than two weeks.

Now I?m going to show you this before picture, but I do have to warn you that this is like SUPER before. This was what it looked like when we bought it:

Everything about this before is terrible, and let me tell you that if you had smell-o-vision that picture would stink to high heaven because of the 30 year old carpet and probably the 30 year old paint job. Let me point out some very special things about the before just in case you miss the subtleties. 1. Popcorn ceilings, 2. hideous 30-year old orange peal textured walls (like really bad bad texture, not new slightly bad texture). 3. old stinky carpet, 4. 1-inch stained pine baseboards & pine doors, 5. creamy old switches and plugs, 6. wall blocking the kitchen, 7. rickety metal railing (we tried to salvage the wood beam, but the stink had permeated it so we had to toss it).? Basically the whole space was repugnant and have I mentioned that everyone tried to talk us out of buying this house?

Well that was more than a year ago. Before we moved in, most of the work was done in this space ? though I don?t have a good progress picture. So Imagine the space with the pretty stairs, hardwood floors, smooth white ceilings and walls painted gray. It was a nice space, but really boring and other than the stairs lacked architectural detail.? And for me, the biggest issue was that there was no clear division of space. I?m all for open concept, but I want spaces to feel like they have a beginning and end. Here?s my first progress photo to show about where we were at when we got started + the cabinets, beam, and columns:

So for the first part of this project, we decided the specs on the cabinets ? we didn?t want them to feel too big and bulky, but yet they still needed to have some weight to them. We went with 12? deep on the inside of the cabinets (standard size for an upper cabinet), 34? tall (standard height for a base cabinet), and then 22? wide (just a good size for the space).

Mr. Project built the cabinets ? the face frames and doors are maple, the boxes and shelves are pre-finished melamine? board.? The outsides of the boxes are trimmed with 1/4? MDF to create the paneling on the sides and backs. The cabinets are topped with a solid chunk of Black Walnut that we got from a friend who had cut down and milled some walnut trees on his land several years ago (whenever using solid wood, make sure that is is properly dried to avoid warping and splitting). It?s really gorgeous and Mr. Project was thrilled to get some solid pieces big enough to use without having to glue anything. Initially I had planned for the whole thing to be white, but I?m so glad that Mr. Project suggested walnut ? it?s expensive, but in the end it brings some much-needed contrast to the very white space.

Once the cabinets were done, he installed them to the walls and bolted them to the floors. Nothing?s moving these suckers. Next he installed a 2?4 to the ceiling (screwing it into the beams above) and then built the beam out of 3/4? MDF like a big U and screwed nailed and glued it onto the 2?4. The columns are built out of 3/4? cabinet-grade plywood cut and mitered and affixed to one small square screwed into the beam and one small square screwed into the cabinet top.

Once all the main pieces were assembled and installed, trim work could begin:

Mr. Project continued the crown molding along the beam, and then trimmed out the columns and put baseboard on the cabinets. Then he started on the board and batten that we did all around the front room, one wall in the dining room, and then up the stairs.

Once all the trim was done the real work began? putting, caulking, sanding, priming, sanding, and painting. Mr. Project and nearly the entire house was covered in a fine white dust for a good 4 days. It was pretty awful. And all I wanted to do was keep cleaning and vacuuming because I couldn?t handle the dust. but in the end it was worth all of the hard work!

Here is the room divider all finished (missing the doors). It?s so so so so gorgeous, and just the perfect thing for the space. You would never know that it wasn?t always there either. It really is just a great focal point for the room. Especially since this is what you see first when you walk in the house.

And here from further back, you can see the expansiveness of the board and batten.

And head on with furniture in place, a peak of the stairs to your left.

And now the full stair shot ? I loved my stairs before, but now I super duper love them with the trim.

And then a few days later Mr. Project installed the inset doors and shiny latches. This matches our kitchen cabinets & hardware to tie the spaces together.

And the over-all shot. Bestill my heart! Such a beautiful space, and completely unbelievable that it?s the same space that we started with over a year ago!

Little evidence supports medical treatment options for adolescents with autism, researchers say

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Vanderbilt University researchers are reporting today that there is insufficient evidence to support the use of medical interventions in adolescents and young adults with autism.

Despite studies that show that many adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorders are being prescribed medications, there is almost no evidence to show whether these medications are helpful in this population, the researchers said.

These findings are featured in the Sept. 24 issue of Pediatrics.

"We need more research to be able to understand how to treat core symptoms of autism in this population, as well as common associated symptoms such as anxiety, compulsive behaviors and agitation," said Jeremy Veenstra-VanderWeele, M.D., assistant professor of Psychiatry, Pediatrics and Pharmacology and Vanderbilt Kennedy Center investigator. "Individuals, families and clinicians currently have to make decisions together, often in a state of desperation, without clear guidance on what might make things better and what might make things worse, and too often, people with autism spectrum disorders end up on one or more medications without a clear sense of whether the medicine is helping."

This research is part of a larger report on interventions for adolescents and young adults with autism that found there is little evidence to support findings, good or bad, for all therapies currently used.

The researchers systematically screened more than 4,500 studies and reviewed the 32 studies published from January 1980 to December 2011 on therapies for people ages 13 to 30 with autism spectrum disorders. They focused on the outcomes, including harms and adverse effects, of interventions, including medical, behavioral, educational and vocational.

Key findings:

  • Some evidence revealed that treatments could improve social skills and educational outcomes such as vocabulary or reading, but the studies were generally small and had limited follow-up.
  • Limited evidence supports the use of medical interventions in adolescents and young adults with autism. The most consistent findings were identified for the effects of antipsychotic medications on reducing problem behaviors that tend to occur with autism, such as irritability and aggression. Harms associated with medications included sedation and weight gain.
  • Only five articles tested vocational interventions, all of which suggested that certain vocational interventions may be effective for certain individuals, but each study had significant flaws that limited the researchers' confidence in their conclusions. The findings on vocational interventions were featured in the Aug. 27 issue of Pediatrics.

Although the prevalence of autism is on the rise, much remains to be discovered when it comes to interventions for this population, the researchers concluded.

As recently as the 1970s, autism was believed to affect just one in 2,000 children, but newly released data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that one in 88 children has an autism spectrum disorder. Boys with autism outnumber girls 5-to-1, which estimates that one in 54 boys in the United States has autism.

Additional investigators on this report include Melissa McPheeters, Ph.D., MPH, director of Vanderbilt's Evidence-Based Practice Center and senior author; Zachary Warren, Ph.D., director of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center's Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders; Julie Lounds Taylor, Ph.D., assistant professor of Pediatrics and Special Education and lead author; Dwayne Dove, M.D., Ph.D., fellow in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics; Nila Sathe, M.S., M.L.I.S., program manager, Institute for Medicine and Public Health; and Rebecca Jerome, M.L.I.S., MPH, assistant director, Eskind Biomedical Library.

Their research, Interventions for Adolescents and Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders, was funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Effective Health Care Program and conducted through Vanderbilt's Evidence-Based Practice Center.

World Congress Of Families Hails Victory For Natural Marriage In ...

What was supposed to be a historic advance for ?same-sex marriage? turned into an ignominous defeat and a victory for marriage and the natural family, when the lower house of the Australian parliament voted overwhelmingly against a gay-marriage bill by a vote of 98 to 42 on September 19th in Canberra. Then on September 20th, a similar bill was defeated in the Senate by 41 votes to 26.

This means that there will be no change to the definition of natural marriage in Australia.

World Congress of Families Managing Director Larry Jacobs congratulated Australian pro-family forces on a hard-earned victory, including three World Congress of Families Partners in Australia, the Australian Family Association, Endeavour Forum and Dads-4-Kids Fatherhood Foundation.

?When the governing Australian Labor Party abandoned its longstanding defense of natural marriage, it was supposed to all be over except for the celebration on the part of homosexual activists,? Jacobs observed.

?But thanks to the hard work of Australian groups like the National Marriage Coalition, the Australian Family Association, Endeavour Forum, the Dads-4-Kids Foundation, and the intense lobbying of hundreds of thousands of ordinary Australians in behalf of maintaining the historic definition of marriage, 40% of Labor MPs in the House joined members of the National and Liberal Parties to defeat this step toward the deconstruction of natural marriage,? Jacobs added.

Earlier this year thousands of pro-family leaders gathered to affirm natural marriage in The Madrid Declaration of World Congress of Families VI (May 25-27, 2012), unanimously adopted by more than 3,200 delegates from 72 nations. The Declaration provides in part:

?We affirm the natural family to be the union of a man and a woman through marriage for the purposes of sharing love and joy, propagating children, providing their moral education, building a vital home economy, offering security in times of trouble, and binding the generations.?

?We affirm that the natural family is a fixed aspect of the created order, one ingrained in human nature. The natural family cannot change into some new shape; nor can it be re-defined by eager social engineers.?

?We affirm that the natural family is the ideal, optimal, true family system. While we acknowledge varied living situations, all other ?family forms? are incomplete or are mere fabrications of the state.?

Jacobs further noted that in the United States, 31 states have now adopted the definition of marriage as ?the union of a man and a woman,? all by popular vote. The latest was North Carolina, in May, by a vote of 61% to 39% where WCF Partner, the National Organization for Marriage was instrumental in defending natural marriage. ?Every time the people have had a chance to vote directly on the issue, the only definition of natural marriage that protects children has carried decisively,? Jacobs declared.

The Honorable Kevin Andrews MP, a 3-time World Congress of Families Speaker, Shadow Minister for Families, Housing and Human Services and author of the new book, Maybe ?I do?: Modern Marriage and the Pursuit of Happiness, has summarized the key reason for protecting natural marriage in his remarks at the 2012 National Marriage Day Rally at the Australian Parliament. ?Hundreds of social science studies reveal that having a mother and a father is the optimal condition for human thriving. We remove this protection at great risk to many, especially children. Marriage must be protected. The future well being of children and society depends on it.?

A Lightlife Sustainable Garden Party: Taking vegan to the streets!

Just over a week ago I received a wonderful surprise. ?I was invited to throw a Sustainable Garden Party, sponsored by Lightlife, to celebrate their new frozen veggie burger. Before accepting the invitation from my friends at DailyBuzz Food, I researched the new product. ?Oops, it contains animal products. ?I thanked them for the invitation and passed ? but they came right back and said ?throw a party with Lightlife?s vegan products!?

Awesome!

There was one other obstacle, however. I received my Lightlife coupons in the mail but left for the west coast ? for a week of work ? the very next day. ?So, I had one single day I could throw this party. A Sunday. Yesterday. ?I wanted to invite a very special family to this party.

I recently wrote about my neighbor, Tiffany. She is the kind woman who dropped off a few vegan health and beauty items that she discovered at work (this kind gesture sparked quite a conversation on this blog:?How Vegan Are You?) because she knew I was vegan. I was incredibly touched by her thoughtfulness and had been wanting to do something for her. ?But just because a Sunday, yesterday, worked for my schedule didn?t mean it would work for this special family of four. In fact, it turns out they would be gone for much of the day to attend a wake for a family member.

I took the party to them.?

Earlier in the week I had ordered?Smart Planet EC-34 Large 3-Compartment Eco Silicone Collapsible?Lunch Boxes?- I thought it would be a fun way to serve a meal on the patio and give my guests an awesome, sustainable party favor; a reusable lunch box is perfect for the kids to take to school and for Tiffany and Jimmy to take to work. ?Once I got home from L.A., and realized I was taking this party on the road, I decided a great way to introduce an entire vegan meal to the family was to make familiar foods that were easy to make. Many vegans, myself included, ?transitioned? by eating vegan versions of what we know and love. ?I put my thinking cap on ? with visions of old time favorite foods running through my head ? and went shopping.

Lightlife has so many great vegan products and it?s really easy to find them. In a five-mile radius from my home in Westchester, New York I can pick them up at Mrs. Green?s, Stop and Shop, A&P, Shop Rite and Whole Foods. ?While at my local Whole Foods I looked at the numerous vegan Lightlife products on the shelf and waited to be inspired. Suddenly I was! Smart Ground = a vegan ?manwich? and Smart Bacon = a vegan seven-layer salad. I grabbed a few more ingredients for the two dishes and them zipped through the bakery section to nab?prepared?vegan cupcakes.

I pulled this party-to-go together in no time.

by JL Fields @ JL goes Vegan

  1. Prepare Smart Bacon according to package instructions, crumble and set aside.
  2. In this order, layer lettuce, onion, celery and peas, in this order in a large bowl (a glass bowl is fun, you see it!). I added a little salt on the peas but this is optional.
  3. Spread vegan mayonnaise over the peas, just enough to cover the salad them.
  4. Add a layer of shredded vegan cheese and add fresh ground pepper (optional) to taste.
  5. When read to serve, add the final layer: crumbled Smart Bacon.
  6. Even though a seven layer salad looks cool, I tend to toss it together before serving.

by JL Fields @ JL goes Vegan

  • Olive oil spray
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 a small yellow onion, finely minced
  • 2 packages Smart Ground
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 1 and 1/2 cups water (I use 1 and 1/4 + 1/4 cup vegetable broth)
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vegan Worcestershire sauce

It was time to break out the eco-lunch boxes for the Sustainable Garden Party ?To-Go?

How great are these boxes? ?The upper right shows them flat, unused, perfectly easy to store. ?The bottom right photo shows one lunch box popped out for use. ?The big picture on the left shows all?four?eco-lunch boxes filled with this:

A Vegan Manwich, Vegan Seven Layer Salad and a Whole Foods Vegan Cupcake.

I was ready to take vegan to the streets?

?and Tiffany and Jimmy were surprised and delighted to take that party to-go!

As a part of the DailyBuzz Food Tastemaker program, Lightlife provided me with a stipend and product for sampling. ?A pioneer in vegetarian and vegan food options, Lightlife?has donated $150,000 to Urban Farming in 2012?to support its mission to end hunger, empower people and encourage healthier eating through sustainable residential and community gardens. This contribution will help grow 25 tons of food and feed an estimated 50,000 people.

I was honored to participate in this Sustainable Garden Party (to-go!) because I was able to introduce familiar foods, vegan style, to people I care about, and to offer them an alternative, sustainable way to take their lunch to school and work. ?Thank you Lightlife and DailyFood Buzz!

Use All Your Resources With These Affiliate Marketing Tips ...

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Affiliate marketing is a very respectable online marketing tactic. Affiliate programs have been generating revenue for webmasters for a good number of years. Affiliate marketing has been going on for several years now, so there?s a lot of information out there on how to become successful at it. From beginner to established affiliate marketer, the tips below will help you to hone and tweak your strategies for even greater success!

Make an alluring newsletter when working with affiliate marketing. When the internet was young, people were excited to get email. As spam became more prolific, people began shying away from offering their emails to businesses. The more appealing the information you provide, the more likely they are to give you their address.

Be open and tell your visitors that you do earn commissions when they purchase through your affiliate link. Your readers aren?t stupid; they?ll recognize affiliate marketing links when they see them, and pretending you?re not doing it will just make you seem dishonest. Through this act of integrity your business is surely to grow.

TIP! It is important to maintain open lines of communication with your affiliate partners, and contact them frequently. Communication is the key to building strong relationships.

Check to see if any affiliate programs you participate in have referral programs. You may benefit from better compensation by referring people to companies that offer additional bonuses for this. You many even be eligible for a percentage of sales commission for any business you refer. If you are running a business that is in a new market, you should consider referring an affiliate marketing business.

Make sure that your marketing is appropriate for the products you?re trying to sell. Use low-click through and high-volume approaches for cheap products. The more expensive a product is, the more you are going to have to sell your customers on the idea of purchasing it.

Hire an accountant. This can be a program instead of a person. Having some sort of accounting method helps keep track of what money is coming in and how much you are spending. Set up your accounts before you begin your affiliate marketing business.

TIP! You may need to invest some money in affiliate marketing before you see the profit you want to garner. Invest in yourself through advertising, and you?ll see better results with affiliate marketing.

You should raise the effectiveness of your affiliate marketing plan by keeping the profitable affiliates, and replacing the less productive ones. Check up on your affiliates and their projects often. By severing ties with affiliates who perform poorly, you are allowing yourself more room for high-quality partners.

When you are an affiliate marketer, perhaps the best way to showcase the product is to proudly utilize it yourself. You should show just how useful you find the product by writing reviews and publishing articles online. Additionally, you can access forums to discuss the benefits of the product. Of course, do not forget to include your affiliate link with every online statement or article to provide readers with quick and easy access to purchases.

Use reviews from individuals that have tried these products and make sure you use shots of the product. If you can provide potential customers with good information about your products in a variety of formats, you are much more likely to make the sale and get word-of-mouth referrals.

TIP! As a time saving tip for affiliates who are dealing with many emails with instructions that need to be addressed, don?t waste time continuing to go back to the emails to reread the message. Instead, become more productive by copying the key points that you need for future reference from the email and paste into one word processing program, so that in effect you?ll have one list.

Affiliate marketing has a high potential for a steady income. Like with anything else, spend some time learning as much as you can about how this style of marketing works

P.S.-If you love to promote online affiliate programs and would love to make an extra $1000/day blogging about your favorite affiliate product, find out how my 2 friends are helping thousands of people make money about their passions! St. Maarten Man Arrested In Murder Of Michael And Thelma King, U.S. Couple

PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten ? St. Maarten police on Sunday arrested a suspect in the slayings of a South Carolina couple whose slashed bodies were found in their beachfront condominium on the tiny Dutch Caribbean territory.

Police spokesman Ricardo Henson said the male suspect was arrested before dawn Sunday and has not been charged yet.

Citing the territory's privacy rules, Henson declined to give further details about the suspect, saying police will issue a statement "as soon as more information can be divulged."

The bodies of Michael and Thelma King were found Friday in their condominium at the Ocean Club Resort on St. Maarten, a 16-square-mile territory with about 50,000 inhabitants that shares a small island with the French dependency of St. Martin.

Chief Prosecutor Hans Mos said both Americans appeared to have suffered fatal stab wounds. The woman was found tied to a chair, and the man was lying on the floor, partially over an overturned chair. Both were in their 50s.

Autopsies were expected to be conducted Monday, according to Mos. Relatives of the slain couple have arrived in the territory.

Friends say the Kings were part-time residents of St. Maarten and owned several homes. They also owned a condominium in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

Terry Tamblyn, a resident of South Carolina's coastal city of Isle of Palms, told The Post and Courier newspaper that King was a retired insurance executive who later started a successful printing business that he sold. He said King also owned a couple of restaurants on St. Maarten.

Local restaurant owner Topper Daboul has told The Associated Press that he and Michael King were building a rum factory together on the territory.

Daboul said he last saw King on Wednesday afternoon and "some other friends had drinks with them that night." He said he wasn't able to reach the Kings on the phone Thursday so he drove to their house the next day and banged on the door. He said he asked a person on the premises to climb over a fence to see if anyone was in the house. Daboul said the person reported a lifeless man leaning over a chair inside the house.

Shortly after the slayings were announced, the St. Maarten government said "every government resource is being brought into play to investigate and solve this case." Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams said she was "shocked" by the murders.

Police said roughly 25 officers were part of the investigative team.

The St. Maarten Hospitality & Trade Association said it's outraged by the murders, which "pains everyone in the community deeply."

CMS Stop - Joomla Designing ? Add Flexibility to Your Websites

Posted by?admin?in?September 23rd 2012??

Joomla is being touted as the most suitable and user friendly open source content management system (CMS). It is used in web development as well as various corporate applications. It is a system that you can rely on and which can be easily installed and managed even by a non-technical person.

There is no dearth of software that are used to design websites but Joomla software stands out in comparison. Jooomla designing techniques make web development easy and convenient. Now, web designers are feeling a sense of relief as joomla web designing tools give them more options to design websites and add suitable features to them.

Joomla designing techniques can be used in varied portals and newsletters, which are used to explain a company?s objectives in a very effective way. Now you can design a website that are easy on your eye and easily extendable within a short span of time using joomla. The best part of joomla designing is that websites created using this technique are easily located by the search engines.

Joomla web designing is becoming extremely popular in the online industry because online businesses are now able to get websites designed that are customer friendly. Websites created using this technique are far more user friendly than websites created otherwise.

You can easily maintain and update your website by adding or deleting new web pages, all thanks to joomla. It being an open source, you are not charged any licensing fee. Joomla?s functionality can be further extended to create anything ranging from a brochure website to interactive membership website.

Joomla templates add flexibility to websites. You can easily change the overall look of your websites without having to redo it all over again. The whole graphic design can be changed within seconds without having to make any modifications in the website content.

You can also create your websites using joomla web designing without taking help from web designers. You can load it up and see for yourself how it works. You are bound to replace all your other software with joomla if you want to create websites that are more functional and fabulous than websites designed using other techniques.

Research uncovers path to defect-free thin films

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? A team led by Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Ho Nyung Lee has discovered a strain relaxation phenomenon in cobaltites that has eluded researchers for decades and may lead to advances in fuel cells, magnetic sensors and a host of energy-related materials.

The finding, published in Nano Letters, could change the conventional wisdom that accommodating the strain inherent during the formation of epitaxial thin films necessarily involves structural defects, said Lee, a member of the Department of Energy lab's Materials Science and Technology Division. Instead, the researchers found that some materials, in this case cobaltite, form structurally well ordered atomic patterns that can change their magnetic properties and effectively minimize the size mismatch with the crystalline substrate.

Epitaxial thin films, used in nanotechnology and semiconductor fabrication, are created by growing a crystal layer of one material on another in such a way that the crystalline structures align. The challenge is to grow the film coherently with minimal defects, which can have a catastrophic effect on a material's performance.

"We discovered properties that were not readily apparent in crystal, or bulk, form, but in thin-film form we were able to clearly see the atomically ordered lattice structure of lanthanum cobaltite," Lee said. "With this knowledge, we hope to be able to tailor the physical properties of a material for many information and energy technologies."

The researchers studied the material in different strain states using scanning transmission electron microscopy complemented by X-ray and optical spectroscopy. Using these instruments, the scientists could see unconventional strain relaxation behavior that produced stripe-like lattice patterns. The result is a material with useful magnetic properties and highly suitable for sensors and ionic conductors used in, for example, batteries.

This discovery and the ability to engineer the structure of materials could lead to advanced cathode materials in solid oxide fuel cells and batteries that can be charged much faster.

"Since cobaltites are promising candidates for magnetic sensors, ionic conductors and surface catalysts, this discovery provides a new understanding that can be used for artificial tuning of magnetism and ionic activities," Lee said.

Contributing to the paper were ORNL's Woo Seok Choi and Hyoungjeen Jeen and authors from Seoul National University, the University of British Columbia, IFW Dresden's Leibniz Institute for Solid Sate and Materials Research, Max Planck-UBC Centre for Quantum Materials, Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research and the University of Saskatchewan.

In Lebanon, anti-film protests underscore divide

Tens of thousands of people take part in Lebanon?s eastern city of Baalbek, Lebanon, Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, for the latest in a series of protest rallies organized by the Shiite militant group Hezbollah. (AP) ? The urge to defend Islam's most unifying figure, the Prophet Muhammad, wasn't enough to bring together Lebanon's divided Sunni and Shiite Muslims. The two sects, which have been locked for years in a sometimes violent political rivalry, held separate protests Friday against an anti-Islam movie.

Tens of thousands of supporters of the Shiite Hezbollah movement held a raucous protest in the eastern Lebanese city of Baalbek. Soon after, a few thousand supporters of a hardline Sunni cleric held gathered in the capital, Beirut.

The rallying cry for both demonstrations was the same: Outrage directed at America and Israel over what they believed was a grave insult to Islam's prophet.

But participants in the two demonstrations could not be further apart, underscoring a years-old divide that has been exacerbated by the crisis in Syria, where the overwhelmingly Sunni opposition is struggling to oust a regime dominated by Alawites, an offshoot of Islam. The 18-month armed rebellion against President Bashar Assad has claimed nearly 30,000 lives, according to activists.

Hezbollah's Sunni opponents accuse the group of using the protests against the movie to distract from the group's support for its ally Assad in the civil war.

"They are doing this so they will move the eyes from what is happening in Syria," said Ahmed Honeneh, a 37-year-old toolmaker among a few thousand at the Beirut rally Friday called by a Sunni firebrand preacher, Sheik Ahmad Assir.

Sitting with friends in a row of white plastic chairs lined up in Beirut's Martyrs Square, Honeneh said he expects Hezbollah's popularity to drop further because of its backing to Assad. He hopes that will offer a chance for Lebanon's Sunnis in Lebanon to gain some of the ground they have lost.

Hezbollah's leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, has called for a series of massive protests this week over the amateurish movie produced in the United States, which depicts Muhammad as a fraud, a womanizer and a child-molester. Nasrallah has called the video an "unprecedented" affront to Muslim people all over the world.

Two Hezbollah-led protests took place earlier this week, and they are expected to continue through the weekend. But Hezbollah appears to be trying to ensure the gatherings don't descend into violence, planning them only in areas where the group has control. None of the rallies targets the heavily fortified U.S. Embassy in the hills outside Beirut.

At Friday's rally in the Hezbollah stronghold of Baalbek in the eastern Bekaa Valley, tens of thousands of people marched peacefully, shouting "Death to Israel" and "Death to America."

"We are all, Sunnis and Shiites, united against our common enemies," said Batoul al-Bazzal, an 18-year-old student. "The Sunni-Shiite divide has been created by politicians and the media to serve the U.S. and Israel," she claimed. Al-Bazzal stood among thousands of overwhelmingly Shiite protesters carrying a yellow Hezbollah flag in one hand.

Backed by Syria and Iran, Hezbollah is Lebanon's dominant political faction and, with its well-armed guerrillas, the most powerful armed force. But as the Syria war rages, it is treading carefully to retain the power it has built up over the past 30 years in Lebanon, a deeply divided country where its strength is resented by Sunnis and some in the Christian community.

Its main strategy for doing so appears to avoid aggravating the volatile fault line between the Sunni and Shiite communities, which each make up about a third of Lebanon's population of 4 million.

It is to Hezbollah's advantage that the crisis over the film has reinvigorated militant rhetoric that U.S. and Israel are the real enemies of Muslims, taking the heat off of both Assad and his loyal and powerful ally in lebanon.

But Hezbollah's flagrant support for Assad's regime which stands accused by much of the international community of war crimes has angered many Arabs.

The presenter of a political show on Future TV, owned by Sunni Lebanese leader Saad Hariri, went on a 15-minute rant against Hezbollah this week, accusing its leader of "hypocrisy" in calling for the anti-film protests while remaining silent over Assad's deliberate destruction of mosques in Syria and killings of his Muslim countrymen.

Sheik Assir, speaking at the rally Friday, took a jibe at the Hezbollah protests without naming the group, saying it was shameful that posters of the "butcher" Assad were held up during Lebanese protests against the anti-Islam movie.

In remarks earlier this week, he accused Hezbollah "exploiting" the movie to recover some of the group's lost popularity and accused Nasrallah of trying to "snatch" leadership of the Islamic world.

"Why didn't Sheikh Nasrallah do anything when the prophets of freedom were martyred in Syria?" he asked.

Assir's rapid rise and growing following are symptoms of the deep frustration among Lebanon's Sunnis who resent the Hezbollah-led Shiite ascendancy in Lebanon.

The 44-year-old, bespectacled, skinny cleric with a long beard typical of hardline Sunnis was previously little known, a preacher at the Bilal Bin Rabah Mosque in Sidon. Now he is openly challenging and taunting Hezbollah like few have dared before, even taking aim at Nasrallah, a revered figure usually considered a red line in Lebanon.

Sunni bitterness still runs deep over clashes in May 2008, when Hezbollah gunmen swept through Sunni neighborhoods in Beirut after the pro-Western government of that time tried to dismantle the group's crucial telecommunications network. More than 80 people were killed in those clashes.

Moreover, a U.N.-backed special tribunal has accused four Hezbollah members in the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, Lebanon's most powerful Sunni leader. Hezbollah says the tribunal is a tool of Israel and the West.

Hezbollah still is Lebanon's single most influential player with considerable support among Shiites and unprecedented political clout. It holds a dominant role in Beirut's government and the prime minister is an ally, after the fall of the previous government sidelined Hezbollah's opponents, the U.S.- and Western-backed factions led by Hariri's son, Saad. As a result, its extensive arsenal of weapons and rockets is virtually untouchable for the moment.

Jihad Bahlo, a 23-year-old salesman in a Beirut clothing shop, said differences between Shiites and Sunnis are largely over politics, and that followers of the two sects often get on well on a personal level. A Sunni, he said his co-workers included Shiites and Christians, and no one discussed politics at work "because we are sick of it."

However, Sunnis tend to be fearful of Hezbollah's military might, said Bahlo, who is from a Sunni village in the predominantly Shiite Bekaa Valley.
