The real-life astronomer who inspired the central character in "Contact," the book and movie about the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, is retiring from her research post at the age of 68. But that doesn't mean Jill Tarter is giving up on the SETI quest. Instead, she's focusing on the search for funding for the non-profit SETI Institute.

For most of the institute's 28-year history, Tarter has been serving as director of the Center for SETI Research as well as holding the Bernard M. Oliver Chair for SETI. "I've worn two hats," she explained. Now she's passing along the center's top research hat to physicist Gerry Harp, a colleague at the institute?? and wearing the Oliver Chair hat full-time as a fundraiser.

"We have got to get this endeavor stably funded," she told me.

Tarter knows as well as anyone on Earth how much of a challenge that will be. In the 1980s and 1990s, she participated in NASA-funded efforts to search for alien radio signals ? efforts?that drew intense fire from some members of Congress. "That certainly put an exclamation point on the funding crisis," Tarter said. The money was raised in a month and a half???thanks in part to a big financial and moral vote of support from actress-director Jodie Foster, who played the Tarter character (named Ellie Arroway) in the movie version of "Contact."

Now?the telescope array is back in business with a new partner, SRI International, which maintains the facility in return for getting half of the array's observing time to track satellites and orbital debris for the U.S. Air Force. But Tarter wants to get the institute's SETI effort out of its scrimp-and-scrape mode. "Lots of startups do that, but they don't last very long if they don't get secure funding," she said.

One of Tarter's top objectives is to build up an endowment for SETI research. "I find it very interesting that at any one time, even in this economy, there are endowment campaigns of $100 million. We could be one of them," she said.

Stable funding would reassure the researchers who work with the institute that they'll be able to pursue their projects over the long term, Tarter said. "We have to make this a real destination for folks who want to do visionary things. ... They're in some sense hanging on a cliff, because there's no guaranteed scientific payoff, although there are lots of interesting instrumentation payoffs along the way," she said.

New twists for SETI
Lots of interesting twists are in store for the SETI quest. For example, researchers are working their way through a list of hundreds of candidate planets identified by NASA's Kepler mission. Tarter said about 10 percent of the Kepler field has been surveyed so far, at a rate of 30 targets a day.

"We don't yet have Earth 2.0, but we almost can taste it," she said. "That will change the whole approach. Does anybody live there? That's going to concretize so many things which are now a bit abstract."

The institute is already using a survey setup that checks three star systems at once for telltale patterns in radio emissions that could hint at an artificial source. The setup, known as SonATA, uses the triple-check to confirm the nature of any interesting effect that's detected. If the same effect is detected from three separate directions, that's a tip-off that the telescopes are picking up on earthly radio interference rather than E.T.'s phone call.?

"The next thing we're going to take on is real-time imaging of a wide field of view," Tarter said. "There are lots of challenges there, and lots of opportunities for SETI detections that haven't been there in the past."

Those are the sorts of challenges that Gerry Harp will be taking on as the new director of the Center for SETI Research. Meanwhile, Tarter will be focusing on the long-term future of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.

"If we can get the research to the next level, there is something so fundamental that we can learn from the detection of a signal, even if it's just a cosmic dial tone," Tarter said.?The message would be that technological civilizations can actually survive long enough to reach out to other corners of the cosmos.

"If they can do it, then dammit, we can do it," Tarter said.

Hiring a sales person or sales manager is a priority for business owners who don?t like to do sales. But it?s problematic, because some reports say as many as 61 percent of sales hires are unsuccessful.

Personal bias and the inability to see the job or candidate objectively, no clear hiring strategy, and superficial interviews without reference checks contribute to the high failure rate.

The biggest mistake is hiring a salesperson based only on experience and likability. It?s critical to pay attention to personal attributes that fit your culture.

For example, compare two hiring benchmarks for a salesperson from two companies in the same industry. In one organization, success is dependent upon (besides experience) problem-solving ability. In the second, management is less involved, and doesn?t provide leads or clear direction. Success in the second organization is dependent upon the ability to self-start and self-manage.

This is a prime example of why salespeople succeed in one organization and not another, even in the same industry.

Consider that industry knowledge and selling skills are generally easier to train than personal attributes, such as self-starting and problem solving. Cultures range from formal to informal, individualistic or team-oriented, risk-adverse or risk-embracing, and the list goes on. Identify your culture and hire those personal attributes that fit.

The second error occurs when they start working at your company. Initial excitement can fade quickly. Many new hires fail to live up to expectations simply because of poor management. Managers say they don?t want to micro-manage, so they throw new hires into the field with some version of ?Go get them.? After several weeks of misfires and being lost in the wilderness, both sides are unhappy. There is too little direction, coaching and motivation.

Think about other professions. Medical interns and residents, engineering graduates and software programmers, to name a few, get specific instruction on how to do things.

Amazingly, three of the top reasons for low performance are 1) not knowing what they?re supposed to do, 2) thinking they?re doing what they are supposed to do, or 3) not knowing that what they?re doing is wrong.

No one starts a new job with the attitude to fail or to perform poorly. Don?t leave it up to chance. Newly hired salespeople are most open, positive and receptive to direction when they first start. Provide a road map to success.

An example from a very successful owner outlines a plan that includes five major outcomes he wants his new salespeople to accomplish in the first month, the first quarter and in each of the last three quarters.

For example, week one is 1) set up your desk and computer, 2) compile a call list and four-week itinerary, 3) spend one-half day each with customer service and shipping, 4) know product line A, and 5) know the company process for orders, billing and customer service.

The second week is 1) know product line B, 2) join two networking groups, 3) make six appointments, 4) call 25 current clients, 5) complete a business plan for the next six months. What makes it work is each Friday, he reviews the expectations and provides feedback. Salespeople who have clear goals and frequent feedback are motivated, productive and happy.

Third, owners with one to four salespeople are at risk of hiring a sales manager too soon. Hiring a sales manager (which is harder to find than a good salesperson) usually adds at least $100,000 of expense to overhead and he or she still requires management, direction and feedback, so the problem becomes more complicated.

Do these things before investing in a sales manager:

? First, be clear if you need a sales manager, marketing person or account manager. Outline a sales process that fits your situation and have everyone adhere to it. Millions of dollars in resources are wasted giving proposals and presentations to unqualified recipients, so be sure to include the necessary qualifiers in your process.

? Next, implement a contact manager and tracking system. Your clients and prospects are valuable assets, so keep track of them. Require some form of minimal reporting, such as number of follow-up calls, new calls to new prospects and so forth.

Track the basic elements of success. Measure if they?re seeing the right people, with the right frequency and doing the right things when in front of them. Make a few field trips regularly so you?ll know what your prospects want to buy, not what you think they want. You?ll also learn what your salespeople are doing and how to help them.

When those are in place, and you still need a sales manager, the timing will be better.

It has a standard paper capacity of 300 sheets, split between a 250-sheet main tray and a 50-sheet multi-purpose tray; it has an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. If you need more capacity, an additional 250-sheet tray is available ($199 direct).

In addition to Canon?s host-based UFR II driver, the LBP7660cdn comes with both PCL and PostScript drivers.

The LBP7660cdn can connect to a computer via USB or to a LAN by Ethernet. I tested it over a USB connection with a computer running Windows Vista.

Speed and Output Quality

Our standard procedure for testing business printing speed is to test using the printer?s default settings. Canon is one of the few printer manufacturers that makes duplexing (double-sided printing) the default on most of its recent printers. Thus, we tested the LBP7660cdn in duplex mode, which tends to be slightly slower than simplex (one-sided) printing.?

I timed the LBP7660cdn on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at an effective 5.1 pages per minute (ppm), a typical speed for a color laser at its price and in line with its 20-ppm rating (for both color and monochrome) that?s based on printing text documents without graphics or photos. It slightly lagged the Editors? Choice

Dell 2150cdn ($399.99 direct, 4 stars), and was slightly faster than the Editors? Choice ?Xerox Phaser 6280dn ($649 direct, 4 stars), which came in at 4.5 ppm. Both the Dell and Xerox were tested in simplex mode.

Output was very good, with text typical of color lasers and photos and graphics both slightly above par. Text quality was good enough for most all internal business uses, though not up to demanding desktop publishing standards.

With graphics, the colors were well saturated. Minor issues included dithering (the tendency for solid areas to break up into fine graininess) and banding (a regular pattern of thin lines of discoloration). In one graph depicting very thin colored lines, the lines were barely visible. Graphics were good enough for internal business use up to and including PowerPoint handouts, though I?d hesitate to use them for documents meant to try to impress an important client.

Photos were slightly above par for a color laser. I noticed some mild blue tinting in a couple of images, and there was occasional loss of finer detail. Photos were good enough to use for marketing materials such as real estate handouts.

Other Issues

Running costs for the LBP7660cdn are 3.9 cents per black-and-white page and 17.2 cents per color page, both high for a color laser. The Dell 2150cdn?s cost per page is 2.4 cents per black-and-white page and 14.3 per color page. The Xerox Phaser 6280dn?s running costs are 3.1 cents per monochrome page, 15.8 cents per color.

The Canon Color imageClass LBP7660cdn provides good output quality as a workhorse color laser printer for a small office. It has very similar specs to the Editors? Choice Dell 2150cdn, identical monthly duty cycles (40,000 pages per month) and slightly higher paper capacity (300 sheets, to 251 for the Dell). They?re comparable in speed and output quality. ?The Dell, however, not only costs $100 less, it has substantially lower running costs. You save $15 per 1,000 black pages and nearly that in color pages compared with the LBP7660cdn?s toner costs.

The Xerox Phaser 6280dn also offers lower running costs than the Canon. As it?s nearing its end of life, it can be bought for a little over $300 from many e-tailers. It offers greater paper capacity (400 sheets) and a more robust duty cycle, while providing high-quality output, especially for text and graphics. That said, the LBP7660cdn is a very solid printer with good-quality output, and worthy of being on the short list of anyone shopping for a color laser printer to anchor a small office.

In addition, the owner of a local home-improvement store says the sculpture would make a good fit in some water retention sites on the company's property.

"We have ponds and fountains on many of our properties, and seeing this piece of artwork in the Chippewa River spurred some conversation," said Menards spokesman Jeff Abbott.
