It?s been our privilege to work with many fine health care organizations.
Raising funds for long-term care presents special challenges for reaching beyond the families whose loved ones are residents in a long term care facility. The general public has many misconceptions about the topic. We?re experiencing this on a personal level in my family now.
Gladys, our 94-year-old, remembers the ?home? in the small town where she grew up as a place where people went to die.? We?re gradually dispelling this myth with tours of some contemporary residences, where she is fed excellent food in welcoming surroundings and meets other elders in similar circumstances.
Other myths are that the ?home? or the ?State? will take the family home and leave the remaining spouse homeless and bankrupt.? Not true.? However, Long Term Care Insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, Elderly Waiver and all the financial arrangements are a mystery to most people.? And Elder Care is becoming more expensive as memory problems becomes an issue for many.
Ideally, nonprofit facilities make up the difference between reimbursement (which in Minnesota is regulated by the state) and actual costs through philanthropy that provides the extras like 42-inch beds instead of 36-inch beds ? which, to me, look like a child?s bed.
However, it takes a lot of coaxing to gain community interest in philanthropy for long term care. It?s best to start with families who are pleased with their loved one?s care.? Beyond that, community relations and educational activities are key for both marketing and future philanthropy. They bring family, friends and the community into the building and in contact with the elders who live there and plant seeds for volunteerism and philanthropy. ?Special events (?friend-raisers? and fundraisers) are key to introducing new people to a type of charity that has been a well-kept secret.
It takes quite a long time to dispel a misperception, but just last weekend, Gladys spoke warmly of the nice place she visited with us last spring.? If someday she decides she wants to move from her house, she knows what she can expect. And I know that philanthropy makes it possible.

HOUSTON (AP) ? The Houston Texans have a message for the Indianapolis Colts:
Now we own the AFC South.
The Texans are division champions for the second straight year after beating the Colts 29-17 Sunday. Andre Johnson gained 151 yards receiving and a touchdown, Bryan Braman scored a special teams score on a blocked punt, and Shayne Graham kicked five field goals.
The Texans (12-2) grabbed their first AFC South title last season after the Colts nosedived without injured quarterback Peyton Manning. Manning is gone to Denver and rookie Andrew Luck couldn't do much against the inspired Houston defense.
The Colts (9-5) had won three straight games and needed a win to clinch a playoff berth a year after going 2-14 in 2011. Before that, they took the division seven times since Houston entered the league in 2002.
Thanks in great part to three sacks from J.J. Watt, Houston bounced back six days after an embarrassing 42-14 loss to New England on national television. The Texans will have home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs if they win out.
Luck threw for 186 yards with two touchdowns in the return to his hometown. He had led the Colts to a rookie-record six wins on drives in the fourth quarter or overtime this season, and he got the Colts within six points late in the third quarter.
But Houston's defense shut him down after that, and the Texans used Arian Foster to eat up the clock. Foster ran for a season-high 165 yards to leave him with 1,313 yards rushing, giving him his third straight year with at least 1,200.
Watt increased his AFC-leading sack total to 19 ? ? the NFL record for a season is 22 1-2 ? and finished with 10 tackles. He also forced a fumble for the third straight game.
Luck was sacked five times playing behind a makeshift offensive line missing center Samson Satele (ankle) and right tackle Winston Justice (biceps).
Johnson, who has 11,008 yards receiving in his career, scored on a 3-yard reception to make it 10-0 in the first quarter. The Texans didn't score a touchdown on offense after that, but were helped by Braman's special teams effort.
Braman blocked his second punt of the season, recovered it and returned it 8 yards for his first career touchdown to make it 20-3 just before halftime.
Vick Ballard had 60 yards rushing on a Colts drive that ended with an 8-yard touchdown reception by Dwayne Allen to cut Houston's lead to 23-17 in the third quarter. Ballard finished with a career-high 105 yards rushing.
Houston couldn't do anything on its next drive and punted. But Indy sputtered, and interim coach Bruce Arians even drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on a punt, giving Houston the ball at the Colts 39.
Graham added a 46-yard field goal to push the lead to 26-17 and made his fifth field goal with about a minute left.
Rookie T.Y. Hilton and Luck connected on a 61-yard touchdown pass just before halftime.
Watt's forced fumble on Mewelde Moore on the Houston 1 was recovered by Tim Dobbins early in the second quarter, robbing the Colts of points. And the Colts stalled inside the red zone again and had to settle for Adam Vinatieri's 26-yard field goal to cut Houston's lead to 10-3.
The Texans had set the tone as they got to Luck early, sacking him twice on the Colts' second drive. Antonio Smith got to him first, and Watt put a move on backup tackle Jeff Linkenbach and took him down for a 15-yard loss.
On offense, Johnson was dominant. He put Houston up 10-0 when he waltzed into the end zoen for a 3-yard touchdown reception. Johnson kept things going earlier in the drive when he caught a pass, lost it and then grabbed it again just before it touched the ground for a 10-yard gain on third-and-9.

Superstorm Sandy caused ?significant damage? to a new fiber-optic Internet network being built in West Virginia with $126.3 million in federal stimulus funds, according to a letter released by the state Office of Technology on Wednesday.
The damage has prompted state officials to consider asking the federal government to extend the deadline for completing the high-speed broadband project. The state now has until Jan. 31 to finish the work, or risk losing any unspent funds. ?
The extension would likely allow Frontier Communications to build more fiber to public facilities. The state also would have time to construct additional wireless towers that serve a statewide emergency communications network.
?We are assessing damage,? said Gale Given, chief technology officer for West Virginia state government. ?We know of fiber damage and have to visit towers to check them.?
In a Nov. 20 quarterly update about West Virginia?s high-speed Internet expansion, state Homeland Security chief Jimmy Gianato made no mention of any damage to the fiber network or towers. Gianato?s son, Adam, is working as a tower inspector on the broadband project in Southern West Virginia.
Gianato sent the report to the National Telecommunications & Information Administration, which is overseeing the stimulus project.
The third quarter ended on Sept. 30, a month before the storm hit, but the federal report asks state officials to declare whether they expect any ?challenges or issues that may impact planned progress? in the upcoming quarter ? October through December. Gianato did not report the storm damage.
Gianato did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
Given said Gianato told her Wednesday afternoon that he had ?just become aware? of the storm damage to the new fiber network at the time he wrote the Nov. 20 report and ?had no information on the scope of the damage.?
In 2010, West Virginia received $126.3 million in federal stimulus funds primarily to buy routers and bring fiber-optic cable to more than 1,000 ?community anchor institutions? ? schools, libraries, county courthouses, health centers, State Police detachments, 911 centers, state agencies and other public facilities.
The state is also spending $50 million from the grant to upgrade the state?s wireless tower network that serves first responders ? police, firefighters and paramedics.
At a meeting last week, Gianato told state lawmakers that radio service through the microwave tower network wasn?t interrupted during Sandy.
Given said Wednesday that the state plans to conduct a ?physical inventory? of the state?s 96 tower sites.
Last summer, state officials overseeing the broadband expansion project announced that $9 million would be left over from the $126.3 million grant.
In October, the state Office of Technology solicited ideas for spending the excess funds. Telecommunications firms submitted numerous project proposals, and state officials started evaluating the projects several weeks ago.
The state has put that review on hold, Given told the companies in a letter sent out this week.
Given wrote that federal and state officials ?both agree it is important to repair the damage before the remaining funds are allocated to additional projects.?
Federal officials also recently announced that grant recipients ? including the state of West Virginia ? could petition to extend broadband project deadlines to Sept. 30.
If West Virginia doesn?t receive an extension, the state risks having to return millions of dollars in unspent stimulus funds.
?If necessary, we plan to seek an extension of the grant to ensure we are able to repair the damage done by the storm,? Given wrote. ?Once the need for additional repairs has been assessed, the grant implementation team will reassess the funds available and notify you of their intent to proceed.?
Given said state officials haven?t discussed whether to ask for an extension through Sept. 30 ? or an earlier date.
The U.S. Department of Commerce Inspector General and West Virginia Legislative Auditor are reviewing the state?s use of the $126.3 million grant. ?

ScienceDaily (Dec. 7, 2012) ? University of North Dakota scientist Mark Hoffmann's version of Star Search goes a long way -- a very long way -- out into the universe.
Hoffmann, a computational chemist, and his colleagues Tryve Helgaker, a well-known Norwegian scientist, and co-authors E.I. Tellgren and K. Lange, also working in Norway, have discovered a molecular-level interaction that science had puzzled over for decades but had never seen.
That discovery, it turns out, may redefine how science views chemical compound formation. It also answers questions about what goes on in places like white dwarfs, the super dense cores of stars nearing the end of their life cycles.
"We discovered a new type of chemical bonding," said Hoffmann, known globally for his pioneering work in the theory and computer modeling of chemical compound formation.
"That's a pretty bold statement, but I'm not kidding you! It's a brand new type of chemical bonding, not previously known to science."
Hoffmann and his colleagues have rewritten the chemical rule book for assessing what happens in the night sky. It's about answering timeless questions such as how stars form, evolve, and eventually die.
Their work also provides the secret for how some compounds form in the distant universe. This momentous discovery appears in an article in a recent issue of the journal Science.
"Our discovery addresses one of the mysteries in astrophysics about the spectrum of white dwarf stars," Hoffmann said. "White dwarfs have an unusual spectrum that has been thought to result from polymerized hydrogen and helium which, of course, do not occur on Earth.
"It's possible out there because the magnetic fields on white dwarfs are several orders of magnitude larger than anything that can be generated on Earth."
The closest white dwarf, Sirius B, is a faint twin to the brightest star in the night sky, Sirius A. It's about the same size as our sun, but much denser; its average density is 1.7 metric tons per cubic centimeter, or about 3,000 pounds compressed into a box the size of a sugar cube.
Hoffmann and his team described a magnetically induced bonding process between materials. "There was speculation that this phenomenon should exist, but no one had the proof, and no one -- until the team I'm on described the process -- had the theoretical structure and the computational tools to address this," he said.
On Earth, even the boldest military experiments generate a peak of maybe 1,000 Tesla -- a measure of magnetic force (refrigerator magnets generate a thousandth of one Tesla). But on Sirius B, for example, magnetic fields are on the order of 200,000 to 400,000 Tesla, enough to challenge the electronic interactions that dominate the chemistry and material science we know on Earth.
Such vast magnetic fields directly alter the way atoms come together, and can alter the chemical reality we know on Earth.
"What we had before we discovered this was basically a paper-and-pencil model of what goes on in the universe. Compared to what's out there in places such as white dwarf stars, the magnetic fields we can generate here -- even with the strongest magnets -- are pathetic."
So how did they do it?
"We computationally modeled the behavior that we theorized, based on universally applicable physical principles," Hoffmann said.
The team's computer model supported their theory. Now it's up to astrophysicists to test the model by old-fashioned observation of the stars.

Three major national unions are targeting Democratic Senators Mark Warner of Virginia and Claire McCaskill of Missouri ? and two Republican congressmen ? with a barrage of ads warning against cuts to Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid as part of any "fiscal cliff" deal.
The ads mean to hammer home that the negotiations could to lead "more than just a deal of high, large concepts here in Washington DC," National Education Association (NEA) Government Relations Director Mary Kusler told Yahoo News by telephone Thursday. "It will impact real people and communities."
The commercials, underwritten by the NEA, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), show a literal take on seniors coping with reduced health funding ? a shrunken walker, a tiny hospital gown, half a pair of eyeglasses, an empty prescription drug bottle.
"Call Senator Warner and tell him: Don't make a bad deal that cuts our care," the narrator says in the ad that will run in Virginia.
The ads target Warner, McCaskill, Montana Representative Denny Rehberg (a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee) and Ohio Representative Pat Tiberi (a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee).
Why those lawmakers?
Kusler noted Warner's "outspoken advocacy for a very large deal" that the unions worry may "put something on the table in terms of cuts (to entitlements) that will really impact individuals." "We want to make sure that he realizes that there's a lot of people watching the decisions that he's making."
Organized labor has grown "concerned with some rumblings coming out of Senator McCaskill," Kusler said, pointing to a recent St Louis Post-Dispatch article in which the senator pushed for a large-scale deal and said the details of the accord "are less important than the fact that we can reach a compromise and would be $4 trillion in long-term debt reduction. That means everybody's going to hurt a little and everyone is not going to get their way."
"The details are exactly what matter in this entire discussion," Kusler said. "This is a discussion about the programs that impact the lives of working Americans, and seniors, and students."
The two Republicans are "leaders in their party on the issues of funding and taxes," and have shown a willingness to "put policy in front of party" and "vote independently on criticial issues," Kusler said.
The organizations unveiled the ads even as negotiations between President Barack Obama and his Republican foes in Congress appeared to be barely inching towards an agreement to avert the "fiscal cliff" ? a package of automatic tax hikes and deep government spending cuts triggered January 1. Experts warn those measures threaten to plunge the economy into a new recession.

^_^
It doesn't lather and has a sweet, pineapple-like scent. ?It smells so good, I wondered if it tastes good too!
I've been using this for a week, but only as a makeup remover and cleanser. ?What I do is I apply it on my damp face and then massage it to loosen up my makeup. ?I add a bit more water if needed. I then wipe it off with wet wipes and then wash my face again using this.??It doesn't lather up but it doesn't mean it doesn't work.?Face is squeaky-clean, but not tight after. ?I think this would work even greater for those with dry skins.?
It's able to remove my makeup but there's a bit of my waterproof mascara left, which is okay. ?This is great for those who doesn't wear too much (or heavy) makeup and when you travel as you don't have to bring a separate makeup remover, cleanser and toner. ?I still use toner after, though. But I think to use a moisturizer right away after cleansing with this is okay too!
It's priced at Php350/100ml tube. ?Pretty steep? Not really, as it's multipurpose. ?And besides, its good cause of empowering women, is more than enough for us to shell out a couple of more bucks. ?Girl power!

Painting is all about discovering the magic of colors, patterns and designs. Art is usually divided in the main categories i.e. abstract or realistic. Contemporary art is one of the foremost forms of art design which attracts a thick variety of people and art lovers. Contemporary art is a style of painting a departure from reality and was positively modern at the time. These are one of the most respected and demanded painting in the market. The reason is that it is very open to reading which makes it excellent art for placing in an unrestricted office or other room where many natives will see it. Abstract contemporary paintings are similar to a musical composition. Abstraction in paintings started to make the picture right around the similar modern time art because it is a painting style classified in the modern art movement.
Paintings are the most commonly displayed art object; however, decorative art, furniture, textile, costume, drawings, pastels, watercolors, collages, prints, artists' books, photographs, and installation art are also regularly shown.? The fine thing about contemporary design theme is affordability and the ease of finding contemporary home furniture. The best abstract painters were those, who had an old fashioned training in realistic oil painting techniques. Contemporary painters make use of watercolors, ink, and oil paints for their artwork. One of the familiar features of the Contemporary style picture is the free hand use of the brush.
Contemporary artists are quite open to trialing and make use of current tools in the course of their work. They utilize multimedia installations and technical sketching in their paintings. These Contemporary abstract paintings are essentially about exploring the nature?s loveliness and the artistic originality but not the technical reproductions what we see with our eyes.
Modern Abstract Wall Art is ideal for modern homes, and is highly diverse.? These paintings are impressed in such a manner that their view says everything. There is huge number of paintings available for deal in the local store as well as online. Another way to find contemporary wall art is through an art store online. Buying and selling painting on the internet has become a big business and has worked to the advantage of both artist and customer.
If you want to buy art at competitive charge, then internet would be the right option to make your selections easier. The internet technology is also helping the contemporary artists to grow faster. When you choose to buy art, you'll have the opportunity to find the piece that best fits your space and your lifestyle before you make your purchase. Contemporary art comes in all colors, forms, and is made out of all sorts of materials. Find a gallery near you, or look at one online.
LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister David Cameron suffered a humiliating defeat in parliament on Wednesday after Conservatives rebelled over Europe, an issue that has divided his party for decades and helped bring down previous leaders.
Although the result carried no legal weight, the setback raised questions about Cameron's authority after months of missteps by his coalition government and it revived painful memories of Conservative infighting over Europe.
Cameron wants the European Union's long-term budget to rise only in line with inflation, while opponents said it should be cut in real terms to reflect the bleak economic landscape at home and across Europe.
The rebels won the vote by 307 to 294 votes, a majority of 13, after they received support from the Labour Party, a generally pro-European group accused by Cameron of "rank opportunism".
"This is a time for Brussels to listen to the British people and do what we are all doing, and that is cutting our cloth," Conservative lawmaker Mark Pritchard, one of the revolt's leaders, told Sky News.
Rebels said the vote - Cameron's first significant defeat in parliament since taking power in 2010 - could strengthen his position at budget talks in Brussels next month because he will be able to say his hands are tied by the British parliament.
Other Conservatives said it would weaken his position.
Many Britons regard the EU as an incompetent and spendthrift bureaucracy. Britain's ties with the 27-member bloc are likely to be a big theme in a national election due in 2015.
Cameron wants Britain to remain an EU member but to renegotiate its role within the bloc, focusing more on trade links and less on areas like regulation.
VETO THREAT
Addressing parliament before the vote, Cameron said he was prepared to use his veto to block an EU budget deal if he thought it was bad for Britain. France also threatened on Wednesday to use its veto if the proposals imply farm spending cuts.
"This government is taking the toughest line in these budget negotiations of any government since we joined the European Union," Cameron said before the vote.
"At best we would like it cut, at worst frozen, and I'm quite prepared to use the veto if we don't get a deal that's good for Britain."
Accused of siding with the rebels to score cheap points against Cameron, Labour said it was right to ask Europe to cut its budget in real terms at a time of economic hardship.
"This is a humiliating defeat for David Cameron which shows how weak and out of touch he has become," said Labour finance spokesman Ed Balls.
In a bad-tempered clash in parliament, Labour leader Ed Miliband compared Cameron to John Major, the former Conservative prime minister whose time in office in the 1990s was dogged by infighting over Europe.
Bitter arguments over Britain's role in Europe were central to the downfall of another former leader, Margaret Thatcher.
Trailing in popularity polls, Cameron faces an uncomfortable balancing act on Europe. He does not want to alienate a majority of voters - and a powerful Conservative minority - who might vote to leave the EU after nearly 40 years.
The Conservative leader must also see off a threat from the fiercely anti-EU UK Independence Party, which polls suggest has around 10 percent of the vote, about the same as the pro-Europe Liberal Democrats, the junior coalition partner.
However, Cameron must also keep the Lib Dems on side and avoid wrecking relations with the EU, Britain's biggest trading partner, as the country emerges from recession.

When the US government held a contest aimed at creating the future of lightbulbs, Philips won with their L-Prize series. ?These bulbs are rated to last 22.8 years, which is so long you?ll probably lose them before they have a chance to burn out. ?But if you manage to keep them throughout their lifetime, each bulb can save you hundreds in energy costs.
Samsung and Google recently introduced the simply named Chromebook, a $249 computer with an 11.6-inch screen and around 6.5 hours of battery life in a slim and svelte 2.5 lb, 0.8-inch thick shell. It's a barebones approach to the concept of a Chrome OS notebook, and it's probably what Google should have done with this type of hardware from the very beginning. But does that mean it's good?
Apple stores are getting new shipments of iPhone 5s almost every day. And there's a way you can get one without waiting in line.
When the iPhone 5 first came out, I decided to skip it and stick with my perfectly useful iPhone 4S. But when a family crisis made putting my sister on my family plan, I decided to give her the 4S and upgrade to the 5. Just one problem: every store in town was sold out, and an iPhone 5 that?I ordered online from Apple wouldn't ship for a projected three-?to four weeks.
Because I wanted to have my iPhone 5 in hand before traveling home to Kansas City in early November to help my sister get her farm readied for winter, I couldn't wait that long. After calling nearly every Radio Shack, Best Buy, AT&T store, and Apple store in the NYC metro area for days, I stumbled on a?way that let me buy online and waltz into an Apple store less than 24 hours later and walk out, iPhone 5 in hand.
High sales of the iPhone 5 (not to mention production problems?have yet to catch up demand. It's still taking Apple about a month to produce and ship an iPhone from China directly to a customer in the United States.
But Apple is also shipping out iPhone 5 units to Apple stores almost every day, most of which are snapped up by people waiting in line or picking up online orders.
That's right: picking up online orders.
The problem, of course, is that if you go to Apple.com right now and put an iPhone 5 in your cart, then select "In-Store Pick up" ??or "Personal Pickup," as Apple calls it?you'll see all the stores in area showing "Out of Stock."
But Apple updates their in-stock information each evening at 10. And if you time it right???and you're lucky and a little flexible about how far you're willing to travel to pick up your phone???you can snap up that stock in just a couple of minutes, leaving you with an email by the morning saying your phone is ready to be picked up.
Here's what you do:
1. ?Before 10 p.m., go through the process at Apple's online store?to add a new iPhone 5 to your account. Select your model, carrier, and plan, then make sure it's actually in your online shopping cart. (But don't check out yet.)
2. ?A few minutes before 10 p.m., open up your cart and switch the shipping toggle to "In-Store Pick-Up." A pop-up window will appear, allowing you to input your ZIP code. Go ahead and do that to see which Apple stores are in your area ??and which ones you consider too far away for travel.
3. ?Right at 10 p.m., start hitting the "Update" button in the pop-up window next to the form field where you put in your ZIP code. It might not update as quickly as it did before 10 p.m. (You're not the only one trying to snag an iPhone 5.) Keep hitting update periodically to refresh the stock information. Be sure to page through all the stores listed each time to check all the local stores; it won't automatically push a store that has iPhones in stock to the top. Obviously, the more stores you have in your area, the more chances you have of snagging a phone.
4. ?Once ??if???you've found a local store with the model you want in stock, select it and pay. Be patient. I started refreshing my search at 10 p.m., and had a unit show up around 10:07 p.m..
Congratulations. You should have an email from Apple in the morning telling you when your iPhone is ready for pickup.
A little flexibility in travel helps. (I rode my motorcycle 25 miles out of New York City to a New Jersey mall to get mine.) And there's no guarantee this will work, since you're competing with anyone else trying to do the same thing online. In fact, it took me two nights to figure out the best procedure. The first night Apple's website keep giving me errors, causing me to accidentally put more than one iPhone 5 in my shopping cart, which then caused *more* errors. I didn't realize my mistake until it was too late.
Even if you don't get one, you can always try again the next evening when new stock arrives. Even if it takes a day or three for luck to fall your way, it still beats waiting in line???or waiting three to four weeks.

Mind conditioning has been known to control and overcome addictions. However if your mind does not have enough power to control your addiction, you will probably end up in a rehabilitation center. The usual things that can be addictive are alcohol, drugs andcigarettes. If you are ready to stop the habits that will shorten the span of your life, then you will need strong will and mind power. You can achieve your goal when you engage in subliminal mind control audio.
Subliminal audio is a tool where you listen to its subliminal messages beneath instrumental music. You may not hear any words because only your subconscious mind can decipher the messages.
Here are the steps on how mind control can cure your addiction.
1. Identify the case of your addiction.
When you want to stop your addiction, you must identify your case first. What is the thing you are addicted to? Can you still control the amount of your consumption of the thing you are addicted to? If you are having difficulty identifying the cause of your addiction then a good subliminal resource can help. The subliminal messages will sweep your negative thoughts away to clear your mind and make room for some reflections about your addiction.
2. Feed your subconscious with subliminal messages.
In case your conscious mind is telling your body to take the thing that you are addicted to, then your subconscious mind should be ready to resist. So you need to feed your subconscious mind with subliminal messages containing positive affirmations and motivations to pursue the plan to stop your addiction. You have to secure subliminal audio loaded with enough messages that can help you re-condition your subconscious. Listen to the subliminal audio consistently so you can be motivated more to stop bring the habit again. There are subliminal messages that are particularly for stopping addiction, so you may want use that as your mind won't be confused on what you want to do.
3. Follow specific instruction contained in the subliminal audio.
When you use the subliminal mind control you must follow specific instructions contained in the subliminal resource. Remember, when you feed your subconscious mind with subliminal messages, it should be consistent as it will always work and guarantees long term stopping of addiction.
Basically, subliminal messages are focused to influence your subconscious mind and when you want to stop your addiction, this is perfect to use while not being disturbed on your daily routine.

Sequoia, currently?the world's most powerful supercomputer, was built for upkeep of?nuclear weaponry. But researchers have put it to work on a groundbreaking simulation of?something a bit more salutary: the human heart.
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, already well-known for work in high-performance computing, has commandeered the Sequoia supercomputer during what is known as its "shakedown period," when it's being set up and tested but isn't quite ready to for its intended purpose. LLNL and other organizations were given time-share access to the computer to do approved non-classified research.
Supercomputing is a competitive field, but for the moment Sequoia is the fastest on Earth: with more than 1.5 million computing cores producing 20 quintillion operations per second, it allows the researchers to simulate the heart at a far greater fidelity than ever before.
LLNL computational scientist Art Mirin describes the project: "Our heart code work has been a great opportunity to demonstrate Sequoia?s power with an application that most people consider important to society, in this case, cardiac modeling." So it's not just about digitizing the heart, but also about humanizing the computer.
The simulations divide the heart into thousands of little digital pieces, each composed of mathematical models that take input from and send data to other pieces. Their interactions require an enormous amount of calculations, even though the model only simulates electrical activity, not physical.
The best that could be done before was to simulate pieces about 0.2mm across, and it could take 45 minutes or so to simulate a single beat. With new software called Cardioid running on the Sequoia supercomputer, not only can they simulate more accurately (the pieces are 0.1mm across, about the size of an actual heart cell), but also hundreds of times faster: now a virtual heartbeat only takes 10 seconds to create.
This huge increase in performance makes many things practical: virtually testing arrhythmia drugs, for instance, or establishing baseline patterns against which real hearts can be compared.?And since heart disease is such a major health risk, especially in the U.S., an accurate electromechanical model of the heart is essential for future research in many other fields.
LLNL researcher David Richards described the potential benefits to Popular Mechanics:
At a very coarse level of resolution, everyone?s heart looks the same.?The details that differentiate individual hearts can be very fine, and our ability to model at extraordinarily high resolution, currently a factor of eight greater than previously, that allows us to capture very fine differences.
The time at Sequoia is running out, and the supercomputer will be running programs for the Stockpile Stewardship program, intended to ensure the country's nuclear warheads remain "safe, secure, and reliable well into the future." The researchers will have to fall back on less-powerful machines ? still far faster than even the fastest desktop, but not quite world-class ? to continue their research. But the powerful Cardioid simulation code will still allow for faster and more accurate simulation than before.
Further developments in the heart-simulation department at LLNL, as well as other applications of supercomputing power, should?appear in their internal Science & Technology publication.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? A new collaborative project among researchers from Uppsala University in Sweden and the University of Cincinnati has, for the first time, demonstrated experimentally the evolutionary force behind the rapid evolution of male genitals, focusing on a species of seed beetle.
This mechanism is revealed in a study published October 25 in the scientific journal Current Biology. The experiments leading to this paper involved a species of seed beetle known as Callosobruchus maculatus. Mating among these beetles involves several males engaging in copulation with individual females.
"When a female mates with several males, the males compete over the fertilization of her eggs," said Michal Polak, associate professor of biological sciences at the University of Cincinnati, one of the co-authors. "Because females mate with multiple males, the function of the male copulatory organ may determine which of the males will fertilize most of her eggs. Our results show that the morphology of the male genitalia affects his fertilization success in these beetles."
The competition to produce offspring is the driving force of evolution. Competition among males occurring after insemination may be an important evolutionary force that has led to the evolution of a diversity of shapes and sizes of male sexual organs, the co-authors assert. This competition among males has generated a great biological diversity that they believe can directly contribute to the formation of new species.
"The reproductive organs of animals with internal fertilization change more rapidly than all other morphological features during evolution," Polak said. "In virtually all groups of animals, from roundworms and molluscs to reptiles and mammals, the male sex organs differ markedly among even closely related species, with female genital traits remaining relatively unchanged."
To experimentally investigate the role of genital shape in reproductive success, the Swedish researchers -- Cosima Hotzy, Goran Arnqvist and Johanna L. Ronn -- bred male beetles with extraordinarily long genital spines. They simultaneously bred male beetles with extremely small spines. Experiments demonstrated that the males with long spines produced substantially more offspring.
"It is possible, however, that breeding for long spines introduced a secondary trait that affects fertility," Polak said. Unintended consequences, he said, are well known to animal breeders.
To prove that it was the spines and not some other trait, some beetles had their genital spines surgically modified using micro-scale laser surgery. Polak's laboratory has gained an international reputation for using a precision laser system to make microscopic changes to insect bodies.
Insects modified through both methods were then observed throughout the competitive mating process. The international team found that the longer genital spines directly contributed to successful fertilization. Seminal fluid from the males was also tracked through high-resolution radioisotope labels, and shown to enter the female body more quickly after mating with long-spined males than short-spined males.
"This provides experimental evidence that male genital morphology influences success in postcopulatory reproductive competition," Polak said.
There is more work to be done, Polak said, to understand the mechanism at work here. It is possible that these longer spines help introduce bio-active molecules from seminal fluid into the female circulatory system. These added proteins and peptides, which have yet to be characterized, may create effects within the female that contribute to male reproductive success. It is also possible that genital spines exert mechanical effects within the female by stimulating her reproductive tract during copulation, thereby inducing the female to uptake and use more of her current mate's sperm.
The study was funded by the European Research Council, the Swedish Research Council, and the National Science Foundation.

U of A medical researchers use simple intervention to improve osteoporosis treatment rates Public release date: 24-Oct-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Patients with 'incidentally' detected spinal fractures more apt to receive osteoporosis treatment when physicians and patients targeted with educational intervention
Older patients who visited local ERs for chest pain or breathing problems and had chest x-rays reveal unknown spinal fractures, were more apt to receive osteoporosis treatment afterward if a simple intervention was used, recently published medical research from the University of Alberta has found.
Treatment rates for the bone-thinning condition substantially improved when patients and their family doctors received follow-up information about the warning signs and risk factors. It is the first and only trial in the world that looked at spinal osteoporosis.
Of those patients who weren't targeted with the intervention, only six per cent received follow-up treatment or testing for osteoporosis. When physicians were given educational material, the treatment or testing rate rocketed to 49 per cent. And when both the physicians and patients were informed, the rate climbed to 65 per cent of patients being treated or tested.
Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry researcher Sumit Majumdar was the principal investigator who led the study that was published in the peer-reviewed journal The American Journal of Medicine. It looked at patients over the age of 60 who visited two Edmonton emergency departments for various complaints and needed a chest x-ray, which incidentally revealed spinal fractures. One group of patients wasn't contacted for an intervention, only physicians were contacted in another group, and both physicians and their patients were contacted in a third group.
Family physicians targeted in the intervention received a one-page email, letter or fax from local doctors and nurses that explained osteoporosis treatment guidelines and recommendations. The same nurse phoned some patients to share the same information and answered patients' questions. These patients also received a pamphlet explaining the link between spinal fractures and osteoporosis.
"The information we provided was not new. But the fact it was linked to a specific patient and had specific advice, it acted as a reminder about what actions family doctors could take when they next saw that patient," says Majumdar.
"These fractures identified in chest x-rays are associated with a 20-fold increase of future fractures in people with osteoporosis and these can be devastating fractures like fractures of the hip that can lead to nursing home admission or death," he says. "What was also concerning is that two-thirds of the patients in the study had a previously documented wrist or hip fracture before the x-ray was done, but they never received osteoporosis treatment."
Majumdar estimates the health-care system could save $1,000 per patient, if high-risk patients like the ones in this study received proper follow-up testing and treatment for osteoporosis. Hip fractures alone cost about $50,000 each to treat, and osteoporosis costs the Canadian health-care system about $1 billion a year.
When compared to the costs of the education intervention $34 per physician and $42 per patient "it's the equivalent of one month's supply of osteoporosis medication," says Majumdar.
One concerning revelation he noted in the study was that 25 per cent of the patients were men and none of them received followed-up treatment or testing as part of usual care.
Majumdar attributes this to the fallacy that "osteoporosis is considered a disease of older women." In fact, men have worse fractures and are more likely to die of hip fractures than women, said the researcher.
The research was funded by Knowledge Translation Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and Alberta Innovates Health Solutions.
"This is both a research and a knowledge translation success story and CIHR would like to congratulate Dr. Majumdar on this important work," says Phillip Gardiner of the CIHR Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis. "The health care costs associated with osteoporosis can be reduced and treatments improved when creative approaches like this are developed and implemented."
Majumdar hopes this educational intervention program could be a model for other conditions that could be identified in the ER, with follow-up care being co-ordinated by nurses or pharmacists.
Osteoporosis is a chronic and progressive condition that leads to fractures (typically of the upper extremity, spine or hip), acute and chronic pain, deformity, diminished quality of life, disability and loss of independence, nursing home admission and even death. It affects two million Canadians about 25 per cent of women and 12 per cent of men over the age of 50.
A woman's lifetime risk of osteoporotic fracture is 40 to 50 per cent, while a man's risk is 12 to 20 per cent. In Canada, the annual cost of managing osteoporosis is estimated at $1 billion versus $750 million for heart failure or $600 million for asthma. Unless effective prevention strategies are implemented, the rates and costs of osteoporotic fractures are expected to double by 2025.

Few have worked as closely with Cam Newton as Warren Moon, and the Hall of Fame quarterback is still defending last year?s pupil, even while acknowledging his need to improve.
Moon thinks placing too much of the blame for the Panthers? 1-5 start (and the firing of general manager Marty Hurney) at the second-year quarterback?s feet is wrong, and any suggestion he?s a bust is ridiculous.
?I think a lot of this is because so many people want to say ?I told you so? about him, but couldn?t because he was so good last year,? Moon told Yahoo?s Mike Silver in a wide-ranging interview. ?I think people are overreacting. How can he be a bust? He just had one of the great years a rookie has ever had, and now he can?t play? Come on.?
Moon acknowledged he?d like to see Newton adopt a more even-keeled approach, something he?s done more of in recent weeks. But as he did prior to the draft?last year, Moon thinks there?s an undertone of racism to some of the criticism.
?I don?t understand it,? Moon said. ?I heard somebody compare him to Vince Young. It?s the same old crap ? it?s always a comparison of one black to another black. I get tired of it. I get tired of defending it.
?If you want to compare him to someone because of his demeanor, compare him to Jay Cutler. There are a lot of guys who whine and moan. Cam?s not biting anybody?s head off or pushing his linemen. He?s just disgruntled, and not handling losing well, because, think about it, he basically didn?t lose in college.
?I don?t think Cam?s as bad as Cutler, because Cutler looks like he doesn?t give a damn sometimes, or he?s yelling and cussing at someone. Cam, he just looks down when they?re losing.?
Moon also doesn?t think the Panthers coaches are putting Newton in good positions to succeed by ignoring the run game with the talent they have, and leaning too heavily on the read-option principles he ran in college.
?I don?t know why they got away from what they were doing last year,? Moon said. ?They were running more of a pro-style offense, and now they?re going more to the read-option, the stuff he did in college. I think some of it is coaching. I think some of it is they don?t have enough good players yet. And there?s no question he?s not playing as well as last year.
?That offense doesn?t allow you to be an NFL-type quarterback. It?s a lot of tricks, sticking the ball into a running back?s stomach, trying to freeze the defense. Even though he can do that and had success with it in college, I don?t think it serves him well in the long run. You can?t keep going back and forth. I think he?s a little bit confused with the footwork, and I think that?s one of the problems with his accuracy ? his feet are crossed up. Why this change? I think it?s backfiring. I think they?re out-thinking themselves.?
